Parents Under Pressure: Social Media’S Impact On Parents’ Mental Well-Being, Ali E. Shull Apr 2026

Parents Under Pressure: Social Media’S Impact On Parents’ Mental Well-Being, Ali E. Shull

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

The rapid growth of social media has transformed how parents access information, evaluate their practices, and compare themselves to others. Although parenting content is widely consumed, limited research has examined its immediate psychological and physiological effects. The present mixed-methods study investigated how exposure to parenting-related social media content influences parental stress responses, affect, and parenting self-efficacy. Participants (N = 83) were randomly assigned to view either parenting-related videos (experimental condition) or non-parenting crafting videos (control condition). Physiological stress responses were assessed using heart rate variability (HRV) during baseline and video exposure. Participants also completed measures of negative affect and …

How Visual Art In Fatty Legs And A Stranger At Home Deepens The Understanding Of Historical Atrocities And Colonial Violence Inflicted On Indigenous Children In Residential Schools In The United States And Canada, Beth Rocco

Student Theses

“I can fix my own hair,” I protested in Inuvialuktun, but she held tight and, with the same motion a bird makes to pull a piece of flesh from a fish, clamped the jaws of the shears down on my braid and severed it” (Pokiak-Fenton 31). This scene in Fatty Legs by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton, was a deep cut into the soul of a child. The first slash was being taken away from her parents and family. Next was chopping off her hair, a symbol of identity and tribal pride for Indigenous people. The children began their residential …

Improving Reclamation Seeding Success Through Seed Technologies, Surface Preparation, And Microbial Inoculants, Josh M. De Santiago Lazalde Apr 2026

Improving Reclamation Seeding Success Through Seed Technologies, Surface Preparation, And Microbial Inoculants, Josh M. De Santiago Lazalde

Theses and Dissertations

Revegetation of reclaimed lands is often limited by poor seed placement, unfavorable surface conditions, and reduced biological activity, particularly on steep or physically degraded substrates where broadcast seeding is commonly used. Improving early seeding establishment under these conditions requires approaches that address both physical and biological barriers to seedling development. We evaluated the effectiveness of surface preparation, seed technologies, and microbial inoculants for improving plant establishment in field and greenhouse settings relevant to mineland reclamation. At the field scale (Chapter 1), we investigated the effects of chain harrowing and seed enhancement treatments on the establishment of grasses, forbs, and shrubs …

Detection Of The Presence And Growth Of E. Coli Bacteria In A Droplet-Based Microfluidic System Using Laser Induced Fluorescence, Oshira Peiris Apr 2026

Detection Of The Presence And Growth Of E. Coli Bacteria In A Droplet-Based Microfluidic System Using Laser Induced Fluorescence, Oshira Peiris

Theses and Dissertations

Antimicrobial resistance is a biomedical event, wherein an infectious microbe becomes non-responsive to the dosage of a particular antibiotic due to previous overuse or overexposure. Currently, agar plate disc diffusion is used as the gold standard for detecting antimicrobial resistance. The possibility of miniaturizing and speeding up detection techniques for antimicrobial resistance is investigated in this thesis. Microfabrication techniques were used in developing two droplet microfluidic systems interfaced with laser induced fluorescence detection. Microfluidic devices were manufactured with different droplet generating geometries using poly-dimethyl siloxane, soft lithography and hydrophobic surface treatment. The microfluidic devices were tested for droplet quality using …

Answers “Go By Water”: Felt Knowledge As An Alternative Epistemology In Othello, Annalisa Gulbrandsen Apr 2026

Answers “Go By Water”: Felt Knowledge As An Alternative Epistemology In Othello, Annalisa Gulbrandsen

Theses and Dissertations

William Shakespeare's Othello is fundamentally a play about epistemology--how does one know what he/she knows amidst the sea of words, evidence, and misdirection? Traditionally, the problem of knowledge in Othello has been treated as an intellectual problem of the mind. However, this thesis argues that the play purposefully draws attention to the limits of what the mind can know by way of the eye (what is seen) and ear (what is spoken or heard), instead offering an alternative epistemology that is felt through embodiment. When Desdemona's words no longer have the power to affect what Othello believes, Desdemona's answers to …

Fixed Point Energy Analysis Of Individualized Brain Models For Electrostimulation, Jaden Devere, Cyprien Tamekue, Ruiqi Chen, Zongxi Yu, Shinung Ching Apr 2026

Fixed Point Energy Analysis Of Individualized Brain Models For Electrostimulation, Jaden Devere, Cyprien Tamekue, Ruiqi Chen, Zongxi Yu, Shinung Ching

Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research

Energy properties of attractors in individualized non-linear dynamic systems brain models were analyzed. Namely, the minimum energy cost required to reach fixed points from the origin was found and compared between models. The purpose of this project was to determine energy cost variability within and between patients, and to explore potential correlations between energy costs and phenotypic variation such as task performance. If useful correlations are found, this framework can be used for the design of individualized neurostimulation strategies.

Planning, Control, And State Estimation For Chain-Style Modular Robots, Sebastian Theiler, Yucheng Nie, Joshua P. Kevil Apr 2026

Planning, Control, And State Estimation For Chain-Style Modular Robots, Sebastian Theiler, Yucheng Nie, Joshua P. Kevil

Electrical and Systems Engineering Capstone Design Projects

Traditional robots have fixed shapes, limiting their ability to adapt to complex or dynamic environments. Modular robotic systems are composed of identical robot modules that can connect and disconnect to form different structures. This allows the robots to form bridges to cross voids and split apart to fit into tight corridors. However, while previous modular robotics research heavily emphasizes reconfiguration planning, comprehensive motion planning remains underexplored. We introduce a novel, end-to-end framework for the planning, state estimation, and control of chain-style modular robot swarms. Our system includes a custom network flow planner that maps polygonal environments into a Reeb graph …

Spectrophotometric Detection Of Food Additives And Pesticides By Magnetite Cross-Linked Tyrosinase Aggregates (Mcltas), İlker Polatoğlu Apr 2026

Spectrophotometric Detection Of Food Additives And Pesticides By Magnetite Cross-Linked Tyrosinase Aggregates (Mcltas), İlker Polatoğlu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, tyrosinase enzyme was cross-linked with glutaraldehyde to form aggregates on the surface of activated magnetite nanoparticles, without the need for a separate support matrix. For the first time, this novel aggregate was employed for the spectroscopic detection of ascorbic acid (AA) and diazinon, as model food additives and pesticides, respectively. This technique, developed as an alternative to optical sensors, not only eliminates their drawbacks but also facilitates the recovery of cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEA) from the reaction medium using the incorporated magnetite nanoparticles. A spectrophotometric technique was used to measure the enzyme activity of the aggregates to …

Navigating Screens For Neurodivergent Individuals, Avery Wilson

Honors Theses

As technology becomes more prevalent in everyday life, it is important to consider the implications that this may have for one's mind and well-being. These implications are particularly important for vulnerable populations, such as neurodivergent individuals, who may have unique sensitivities to technology consumption. This paper reviews current literature to provide an overview of the implications of using media on the neurodivergent population, such as individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), who often possess unique brain sensitivities that influence technology consumption.

To begin, the paper examines the changes in brain structure and functioning in children …

Model Unification: A Systematic Approach For The Cluster Expansion, Kolten Barfuss Apr 2026

Model Unification: A Systematic Approach For The Cluster Expansion, Kolten Barfuss

Theses and Dissertations

A systematic approach for model unification of cluster expansion models is developed and demonstrated. The method builds on previous work with the Manifold Boundary Approximation Method (MBAM) to identify supremal models. The work is motivated by the exercise of unifying cluster expansion models – characterized by Π matrices – for two binary alloys that share one atomic species to form a model for the ternary alloy. The result is the Supremal Π Algorithm, a systematic unification algorithm that relies on an MBAM-informed understanding of models and on the singular value decomposition. The algorithm yields ΠΛ, a Π matrix for the …

Perceived Inadequate Neighborhood Food Shopping And Cardiovascular Disease Risk: The Multi-Ethnic Study Of Atherosclerosis, Amier Haidar, Ghadi Ghanem, Rishi Rikhi, Karol E Watson, Shreela V Sharma, Michael D Shapiro

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: Individuals with access to healthy food have healthier diets, improved cardiometabolic risk profiles, and decreased cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, previous studies have focused on the neighborhood food environment as distance to and density of food retailers. Our study examines the association between an individual's perceived adequacy of neighborhood food shopping and incident CVD.

Methods: We analyzed data from 6814 participants in the MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis), a prospective cohort study of individuals aged 45 to 84 who were enrolled in the study between 2000 and 2002 and followed longitudinally. Cox proportional hazards models estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for …
