An Efficient Public-Key Framework, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Oct 2003

An Efficient Public-Key Framework, Jianying Zhou, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Public-key certificates play an important role in binding the public key with the identity of the owner of the corresponding private key. A certificate might be revoked before its scheduled expiry date by the issuing CA. Efficient and timely distribution of certificate revocation information is a big challenge facing the PKI providers. Existing certificate revocation schemes place a considerable processing, communication, and storage overheads on the CA as well as the relying parties. To improve the current situation, we propose a revocation-free public-key framework, in which the maximum lifetime of a certificate is divided into short periods and the certificate …

In this paper we show how Internet-like protocols may be used to coordinate and control the usage of a resource by n agents. Lyapunov second method is used to provide sufficient stability conditions of the dynamics of the n agents in the presence of time delay.

An Efficient Known Plaintext Attack On Fea-M, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng Oct 2003

An Efficient Known Plaintext Attack On Fea-M, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Yi et al. have proposed a cipher called the fast encryption algorithm for multimedia (FEA-M). Recently Mihaljevi and Kohno pointed out that FEA-M is insecure. However, their attacks are not efficient: their chosen plaintext attack and known plaintext attack require 237-bit chosen plaintext and 260-bit known plaintext, respectively. In this paper we give an efficient known plaintext attack against FEA-M. Our attack requires only 228-bit known plaintext and about 233 XOR operations.

Wind-Induced Exchange In Semi-Enclosed Basins, Rosario Sanay Oct 2003

Wind-Induced Exchange In Semi-Enclosed Basins, Rosario Sanay

OES Theses and Dissertations

The wind-induced circulation over laterally varying bathymetry was investigated in homogeneous and in stratified systems using the three-dimensional Regional Ocean Model (ROMS). For homogeneous systems, the focus was to describe the influence of the earth's rotation on the lateral distribution of the flow with particular emphasis on the transverse circulation. Along-basin wind-stress with no rotation caused a circulation dominated by an axially symmetric transverse structure consisting of downwind flow over the shoals and upwind flow in the channel along the whole domain. Transverse circulation was important only at the head of the system where the water sank and reversed direction …

African American And European American Therapists’ Experiences Of Addressing Race In Cross-Racial Psychotherapy Dyads, Sarah Knox, Alan W. Burkard, Adanna Jinaki Johnson, Lisa A. Suzuki, Joseph G. Ponterotto Oct 2003

African American And European American Therapists’ Experiences Of Addressing Race In Cross-Racial Psychotherapy Dyads, Sarah Knox, Alan W. Burkard, Adanna Jinaki Johnson, Lisa A. Suzuki, Joseph G. Ponterotto

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Using Consensual Qualitative Research, 12 licensed psychologists’ overall experiences addressing race in psychotherapy were investigated, as were their experiences addressing race in a specific cross-racial therapy dyad. Results indicated that only African American psychologists reported routinely addressing race with clients of color or when race was part of a client’s presenting concern. European American psychologists indicated that they would address race if clients raised the topic, and some reported that they did not normally address race with racially different clients. When discussing a specific cross-racial dyad, African American therapists more often than European American therapists addressed race because they perceived …

In November 2001, member states of the World Trade Organization (WTO) approved the proposal to admit China to the international trading body. After fifteen years of exhaustive negotiations, China finally became the 143rd member of the WTO on December 11, 2001. To reflect on this event, this panel brings together six China experts to explore the ramifications of China's accession to the WTO. Among the issues addressed are whether China is making progress in its compliance with the WTO requirements, whether China is suffering setbacks in the socio-economic arena, whether there are any prospects for democratic reforms and stronger human …

Four Common Misconceptions About Copyright Piracy, Peter K. Yu Oct 2003

Four Common Misconceptions About Copyright Piracy, Peter K. Yu

Faculty Scholarship

Copyright piracy is one of the most difficult, yet important, transnational problems in the twenty-first century. Although legal literature has discussed copyright piracy extensively, commentators rarely offer a "grand unified theory" on this global problem. Rather, they give nuanced analyses, discussing the many aspects of the problem-political, social, economic, cultural, and historical.

This nuanced discussion, however, is missing in the current public debate. To capture the readers' emotion and to generate support for proposed legislative and executive actions, the debate often oversimplifies the complicated picture by overexagerrating a particular aspect of the piracy problem or by offering an abbreviated, easy-to-understand, …

The Specificity Of International Arbitration: The Case For Faa Reform, William W. Park Oct 2003

The Specificity Of International Arbitration: The Case For Faa Reform, William W. Park

Faculty Scholarship

If a pollster asked a random selection of Americans for a one-line verbal portrait of arbitration, common responses might include the following: (i) private litigation arising for construction and business disputes; (ii) a mechanism to resolve workplace tensions between management and labor; (iii) a process by which finance companies and stock brokers shield themselves from customer complaints; (iv) a way to level the playing field in deciding commercial controversies among companies from different parts of the world; (v) the way big corporations use NAFTA to escape regulation. To some extent all would be correct.'

Unfortunately, these different varieties of arbitration …

Like Oil And Water: The Wto And The World's Water Resources, Rona Nardone

Connecticut Journal of International Law

It has been predicted that by 2025, two-thirds of the world's population will not have sufficient access to fresh drinking water to meet their basic needs.' Pollution, global climate change, unsustainable use, and a burgeoning worldwide population have compromised the security of existing water resources.2 Scarcity and inaccessibility are not merely specters of the future. Presently, 1.1 billion people lack clean drinking water, 2.4 billion are without water sanitation services,' and water shortages currently plague 450 million people in 29 countries.' In August of 2002, delegates to the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development pledged to reduce the number of …

Status Of Taliban And Al Qaeda Soldiers: Another Viewpoint, Lawrence Azubuike Oct 2003

Status Of Taliban And Al Qaeda Soldiers: Another Viewpoint, Lawrence Azubuike

Connecticut Journal of International Law

September 11, 2001 has become a milestone in the annals of history. International law, especially on the use of force and laws of armed conflict, is now discussed with reference to the state of the law before and after that date. One of the quagmires which the events of that day thrust upon international law is how to categorize those involved in the armed conflict that directly resulted from the terrorist attacks. Conventional wisdom holds that Taliban soldiers can be treated as prisoners of war (POWs), while Al Qaeda soldiers cannot. The attitude of the United States has been a …

Intelligence quotient tests (and our examining processes) largely deal with verbal-linguistic and mathematical-logical intelligence. The point at issue is that a basic understanding of multiple intelligence theory should modify lecturer behavior and utilization of computer-mediation.

Hookworm infection is one of the most important parasitic infections of humans, possibly outranked only by malaria as a cause of misery and suffering. An estimated 1.2 billion people are infected with hookworm in areas of rural poverty in the tropics and subtropics. Epidemiological data collected in China, Southeast Asia, and Brazil indicate that, unlike other soil-transmitted helminth infections, the highest hookworm burdens typically occur in adult populations, including the elderly. Emerging data on the host cellular immune responses of chronically infected populations suggest that hookworms induce a state of host anergy and immune hyporesponsiveness. These features account for the …

Dually Eligible For Medicare And Medicaid: Two For One Or Double Jeopardy?, Jennifer Ryan, Nora Super

National Health Policy Forum

This issue brief describes the characteristics of the population of individuals known as “dual eligibles,” who are eligible for health insurance coverage through both Medicare and Medicaid. It also looks at the differences between “full Medicaid” and “supplemental Medicaid” dual eligibles and the ongoing challenges associated with enrollment and eligibility, integration and coordination, and managed care. The paper presents several examples of integrated care programs designed to better serve the dual-eligible population, including the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, Evercare, social health maintenance organizations, and state/federal initiatives such as the Wisconsin Partnership Program, Texas STAR+PLUS, and others. Finally, …
