Remote Monitoring Of Repository Integrity Using Passive Seismic Arrays, Barbara Luke, Evangelos Yfantis Sep 2003

Remote Monitoring Of Repository Integrity Using Passive Seismic Arrays, Barbara Luke, Evangelos Yfantis

Publications (YM)

Once radioactive waste is emplaced in the repository, the challenge of monitoring the continued integrity of the excavated openings (e.g., emplacement drifts) escalates tremendously. We envision a seismic monitoring array installed on the surface at Yucca Mountain, which operates automatically to monitor repository opening stability in the long term. The objective is to monitor and validate the structural integrity of the emplacement drifts through identifying and localizing rock falls that could compromise drift access, hinder waste retrievability, and potentially reduce the effective life of waste canisters. Collateral benefits of the system include the ability to address some outstanding uncertainties regarding …

Control Method And Circuit To Provide Voltage And Current Regulation For Multiphase Dc/Dc Converters, Issa Batarseh, Jaber Abu Qahouq, Wei Gu, Hong Mao, Wenkai Wu Sep 2003

Control Method And Circuit To Provide Voltage And Current Regulation For Multiphase Dc/Dc Converters, Issa Batarseh, Jaber Abu Qahouq, Wei Gu, Hong Mao, Wenkai Wu

UCF Patents

A multiphase DC/DC converter with voltage-mode hysteretic control and instantaneous current sharing functionality method and circuit. The disclosed method and circuit provides independent output voltage regulation and phases current regulation for the converter in two separate loops; one of which is concerned with voltage regulation preferably hysteretic regulation and the other which is concerned with phase current regulation. In one embodiment, each phase in the DC/DC converter is driven by a frequency divided signal derived directly from the output voltage ripple so that each phase has a switching frequency equal to the output voltage ripple frequency divided by the number …

Strengthening The Distinction Between Copyright And Trademark: The Supreme Court Takes A Stand, Jessica Bohrer Sep 2003

Strengthening The Distinction Between Copyright And Trademark: The Supreme Court Takes A Stand, Jessica Bohrer

Duke Law & Technology Review

Until recently, the question of whether §43 of the Lanham Act prevented the unaccredited copying of an un-copyrighted work was an open one. However, in Dastar v. Twentieth Century Fox, the United States Supreme Court speaks directly on this issue, emphasizing the distinction between copyright and trademark protections and cautioning against "misuse or overextension" of trademark protections into areas traditionally covered by copyright or patent law. This iBrief assesses the importance of such line drawing and explores the implications of this decision.

The Economic Impact Of The Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository On The Economy Of Nevada, Mary Riddel, Martin Boyett, R. Keith Schwer Sep 2003

The Economic Impact Of The Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository On The Economy Of Nevada, Mary Riddel, Martin Boyett, R. Keith Schwer

Publications (YM)

Current Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) operations provide relatively high-wage employment to the Nevada economy and constitute an economically stable proportion of the total gross state product (GSP). If the YMP were discontinued, economic losses, relative to the current economy, would be substantial. In 2000, the YMP contributed $195.7 million to the Nevada economy and an additional $188.6 million in 2001. The YMP was responsible for 3,650 jobs in 2000. This translates into a real disposable income of roughly $131 million earned each year in the state of Nevada.
