Marketing Of Medicinal Plants Of Utror-Gabral Valleys, Swat, Pakistan, Muhammad Hamayun, Mir Ajab Khan, Shaheen Begum

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

This paper is based on the results of an ethnobotanical project carried out in the area comprising Utror-Gabral Valleys of upper Swat. The residents of the area use indigenous medicinal plants for curing diseases and also sell some of them in the local market for earning their live hood. About 44 medicinal plants are collected in the area during the months of May, June, July and August. Out of these 44 species collected and marketed, 8 species of medicinal plants are endangered, 8 species are vulnerable and 8 species are rare. Bulk of these medicinal plants are used locally and …

Pharmacological Considerations Of Tylophora Asthmatica, Amrit Pal Singh Jan 2003

Pharmacological Considerations Of Tylophora Asthmatica, Amrit Pal Singh

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Tylophora asthmatica has recently been included as one of the important drug from natural source for the treatment of respiratory diseases. Clinical studies have shown effectiveness of the drug in bronchial asthma and thus modern research withstands the ancient claims of traditional medicine. This article reviews the various scientific studies and tries to analyze the current status of Tylophora asthmatica in bronchial asthma.

Landslide Tsunami Case Studies Using A Boussinesq Model And A Fully Nonlinear Tsunami Generation Model, P. Watts, Stephan Grilli, J. T. Kirby, G. J. Fryer, D. R. Tappin Jan 2003

Landslide Tsunami Case Studies Using A Boussinesq Model And A Fully Nonlinear Tsunami Generation Model, P. Watts, Stephan Grilli, J. T. Kirby, G. J. Fryer, D. R. Tappin

Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications

Case studies of landslide tsunamis require integration of marine geology data and interpretations into numerical simulations of tsunami attack. Many landslide tsunami generation and propagation models have been proposed in recent time, further motivated by the 1998 Papua New Guinea event. However, few of these models have proven capable of integrating the best available marine geology data and interpretations into successful case studies that reproduce all available tsunami observations and records. We show that nonlinear and dispersive tsunami propagation models may be necessary for many landslide tsunami case studies. GEOWAVE is a comprehensive tsunami simulation model formed in part by …

Diesel Exhaust Particles Exert Acute Effects On Airway Inflammation And Function In Murine Allergen Provocation Models, Minqi Hao, Stephania Comier, Meiying Wang, James J. Lee, Andre Nel Jan 2003

Diesel Exhaust Particles Exert Acute Effects On Airway Inflammation And Function In Murine Allergen Provocation Models, Minqi Hao, Stephania Comier, Meiying Wang, James J. Lee, Andre Nel

Faculty Publications

Background: Epidemiologic studies show that sudden surges in ambient particulate matter (PM) levels can trigger acute asthma exacerbations. Although diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) act as an adjuvant for allergic sensitization, this is a delayed response and does not explain acute PM effects on airway hyperreactivity (AHR). Objective: Our aim was to determine the acute effects of DEPs on AHR using a mouse model. Methods: Three protocols were developed, 2 of which require OVA sensitization, whereas the third was OVA independent. In the mild sensitization protocol BALB/c mice receive intraperitoneal OVA without alum and are then challenged with aerosolized OVA with …

Movement And Spatial Population Structure Of A Prairie Planthopper, James T. Cronin Jan 2003

Movement And Spatial Population Structure Of A Prairie Planthopper, James T. Cronin

Faculty Publications

The transfer of organisms among patches is a key process influencing the spatial structure and regional dynamics of a population; yet, detailed experimental studies of animal movement among patches are uncommon. I performed a series of mark-recapture studies to quantify the movement of a planthopper, Prokelisia crocea (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), among discrete patches of its host plant, prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata). Results from these dispersal studies were used to predict the natural distributions and to characterize the spatial population structure of P. crocea. Planthopper emigration loss per patch increased linearly with the density of female conspecifics and was nonlinearly related to …

A Genome-Wide Scan For Body Mass Index Among Nigerian Families, Adebowale Adeyemo, Amy Luke, Richard Cooper, Xiaodong Wu, Bamidele Tayo, Xiaofeng Zhu, Charles Rotimi, Nourdine Bouzekri, Ryk Ward

Objective: Interest in mapping genetic variants that are associated with obesity remains high because of the increasing prevalence of obesity and its complications worldwide. Data on genetic determinants of obesity in African populations are rare. Research Methods and Procedures: We have undertaken a genome-wide scan for body mass index (BMI) in 182 Nigerian families that included 769 individuals. Results: The prevalence of obesity was only 5%, yet polygenic heritability for BMI was in the expected range (0.46 ± 0.07). Tandem repeat markers (402) were typed across the genome with an average map density of 9 cM. Pedigree-based analysis using a …
