In Her Husband’S Family: A Newly Wed Woman’S Expectations And Her New Family’S Attitudes In Rural Assam, India, Dilip K. Medhi

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the introduction:

Until recently, living in a joint family system was typical among Hindus and members of other religious groups in India. Living in an extended joint family was also a common practice. However, joint family groups and extended joint family living are now relatively rare, due to India’s economic and social developments over the past four decades or so. Currently, the most common family arrangement is that of the nuclear family, comprised of a father, mother and their children. In rural areas, this nuclear family unit operates within a number of more traditional expectations and arrangements, however. Within …

2002 United States Senate Runoff Survey, Susan E. Howell Nov 2002

2002 United States Senate Runoff Survey, Susan E. Howell

Survey Research Center Publications

The race for the U.S. Senate seat is now a dead heat with Landrieu and Terrell separated by only one percentage point in a cross-section of Louisiana registered voters. As expected, Landrieu holds a commanding lead among African American voters, and Terrell is favored by a majority of white voters. As is often the case, the outcome will hinge on a combination of African American turnout and the percent of the white vote Landrieu is able to obtain.

Twenty Nonparametric Statistics And Their Large Sample Approximations, Gail F. Fahoome Nov 2002

Twenty Nonparametric Statistics And Their Large Sample Approximations, Gail F. Fahoome

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Nonparametric procedures are often more powerful than classical tests for real world data which are rarely normally distributed. However, there are difficulties in using these tests. Computational formulas are scattered throughout the literature, and there is a lack of availability of tables and critical values. The computational formulas for twenty commonly employed nonparametric tests that have large-sample approximations for the critical value are brought together. Because there is no generally agreed upon lower limit for the sample size, Monte Carlo methods were used to determine the smallest sample size that can be used with the respective large-sample approximation. The statistics …

Trimming, Transforming Statistics, And Bootstrapping: Circumventing The Biasing Effects Of Heterescedasticity And Nonnormality, H. J. Keselman, Rand R. Wilcox, Abdul R. Othman, Katherine Fradette Nov 2002

Trimming, Transforming Statistics, And Bootstrapping: Circumventing The Biasing Effects Of Heterescedasticity And Nonnormality, H. J. Keselman, Rand R. Wilcox, Abdul R. Othman, Katherine Fradette

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Researchers can adopt different measures of central tendency and test statistics to examine the effect of a treatment variable across groups (e.g., means, trimmed means, M-estimators, & medians. Recently developed statistics are compared with respect to their ability to control Type I errors when data were nonnormal, heterogeneous, and the design was unbalanced: (1) a preliminary test for symmetry which determines whether data should be trimmed symmetrically or asymmetrically, (2) two different transformations to eliminate skewness, (3) the accuracy of assessing statistical significance with a bootstrap methodology was examined, and (4) statistics that use a robust measure of the typical …

A Simulation Study Of The Impact Of Forecast Recovery For Control Charts Applied To Arma Processes, John N. Dyer, B. Michael Adams, Michael D. Conerly Nov 2002

A Simulation Study Of The Impact Of Forecast Recovery For Control Charts Applied To Arma Processes, John N. Dyer, B. Michael Adams, Michael D. Conerly

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Forecast-based schemes are often used to monitor autocorrelated processes, but the resulting forecast recovery has a significant effect on the performance of control charts. This article describes forecast recovery for autocorrelated processes, and the resulting simulation study is used to explain the performance of control charts applied to forecast errors.

Determining Predictor Importance In Multiple Regression Under Varied Correlational And Distributional Conditions, Tiffany A. Whittaker, Rachel T. Fouladi, Natasha J. Williams Nov 2002

Determining Predictor Importance In Multiple Regression Under Varied Correlational And Distributional Conditions, Tiffany A. Whittaker, Rachel T. Fouladi, Natasha J. Williams

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This study examines the performance of eight methods of predictor importance under varied correlational and distributional conditions. The proportion of times a method correctly identified the dominant predictor was recorded. Results indicated that the new methods of importance proposed by Budescu (1993) and Johnson (2000) outperformed commonly used importance methods.

Correlation Of Blood Volume Values And Pulmonary Artery Catheter Measurements, Sadir J. Alrawi, Leonidas S. Miranda, Joseph N. Cunningham, Anthony J. Acinapura, Ramanathan Raju Nov 2002

Correlation Of Blood Volume Values And Pulmonary Artery Catheter Measurements, Sadir J. Alrawi, Leonidas S. Miranda, Joseph N. Cunningham, Anthony J. Acinapura, Ramanathan Raju

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: To correlate the values generated by direct total blood volume measurement with pulmonary artery catheter parameters and commonly used laboratory values in the management of critically ill patients. METHODS: This study was carried out at the Lutheran Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York, United States of America, during the period 1998-1999. We prospectively correlated the total blood volume (TBV) values generated by the blood volume analyzer (BVA)-100 using I131-tagged albumin, with the values obtained from pulmonary artery catheter (PAC) of central venous pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, cardiac output, and with laboratory values of hematocrit, lactate, arterial blood gas and …

Primary Dendrite Distribution And Disorder During Directional Solidification Of Pb-Sb Alloys, Jun Hui, R. Tiwari, X. Wu, Surendra N. Tewari, R. Trivedi Nov 2002

Primary Dendrite Distribution And Disorder During Directional Solidification Of Pb-Sb Alloys, Jun Hui, R. Tiwari, X. Wu, Surendra N. Tewari, R. Trivedi

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Pb-2.2 wt pct Sb and Pb-5.8 wt pet Sb alloys have been directionally solidified from a single-crystal seed with its [100] orientation parallel to the growth direction, to examine the primary dendrite distribution and disorder of the dendrite arrays. The dendrite distribution and ordering have been investigated using analysis techniques such as the Gauss-amplitude fit to the frequency distribution of nearest and higher-order spacings, minimum spanning tree (MST), Voronoi polygon, and Fourier transform (FT) of the dendrite centers. Since the arrangement of dendrites is driven by the requirement to accommodate side-branch growth along the (100) directions, the FT images of …

Source Localization In A Time-Varying Ocean Waveguide, Cristiano Soares, Martin Siderius, Sérgio M. Jesus Nov 2002

Source Localization In A Time-Varying Ocean Waveguide, Cristiano Soares, Martin Siderius, Sérgio M. Jesus

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the most stringent impairments in matched-field processing is the impact of missing or erroneous environmental information on the final source location estimate. This problem is known in the literature as model mismatch and is strongly frequency dependent. Another unavoidable factor that contributes to model mismatch is the natural time and spatial variability of the ocean waveguide. As a consequence, most of the experimental results obtained to date focus on short source-receiver ranges (usually <5 >km), stationary sources, reduced time windows and frequencies generally below 600 Hz. This paper shows that MFP source localization can be made robust to time–space …

Real Estate Tax Credits And Other Financial Incentives For Investing In Historic Property In The United States, Robert Pickard, Tracy Pickerill Nov 2002

Real Estate Tax Credits And Other Financial Incentives For Investing In Historic Property In The United States, Robert Pickard, Tracy Pickerill

Articles

This paper examines the legislative and administrative background for designating historic property for protection in the United States (US) and their rehabilitation against a whole series of financial inducements and mechanisms. The preservation of heritage buildings in the US forms an integral part of the property market. Market forces and government regulations in the form of preservation law, standards for rehabilitation and the revenue code dictate the success or failure of renovating historic buildings. At all levels of governments (federal, state and local) there has been a growing reluctance in recent years to increase regulatory burdens and fiscal constraints on …

Federal Consistency In New Jersey, Urban Harbors Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston Nov 2002

Federal Consistency In New Jersey, Urban Harbors Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Urban Harbors Institute Publications

A discussion paper prepared as part of a focus group on the topic of Federal Consistency in New Jersey.

In 1972, the U. S. Congress passed the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA), designed to “preserve, protect, develop, and where possible, to restore and enhance the resources of the nation's coastal zone.” The CZMA encouraged coastal states to develop and implement comprehensive management programs that balance the need for coastal resource protection with the need for economic growth and development within the coastal zone.

In the latter portion of the 1970s New Jersey developed a coastal management plan that was fully …

Attribute-Based Differentiation Of Alternatives, Jeffrey Keisler Nov 2002

Attribute-Based Differentiation Of Alternatives, Jeffrey Keisler

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

An intermediate step is introduced to the decision dialogue process for decision analysis. Alternatives are refined after they have been generated within a strategy table but before they are subject to more detailed evaluation. Two or more judges create a subjective mapping from alternatives to attributes that will later be mapped to criteria. In strategy tables, each of the alternative strategies consists of a coherent set of choices made across several decisions that are to be coordinated. These strategic alternatives are modified so as to increase their differentiation in the attribute space, rather than in the decision space alone. When …

Activity Patterns And Correlates Among Youth: Differences By Weight Status, Wendell C. Taylor, James F. Sallis, Marsha Dowda, Patty S. Freedson, Karen Eason, Russell R. Pate Nov 2002

Activity Patterns And Correlates Among Youth: Differences By Weight Status, Wendell C. Taylor, James F. Sallis, Marsha Dowda, Patty S. Freedson, Karen Eason, Russell R. Pate

Faculty Publications

The purposes of the study were to assess differences in physical activity levels and correlates of physical activity among overweight (‡ 85th percentile of body mass index for their sex and age) and non-overweight (< 85th percentile) youth. The sample included 509 seventh through twelfth graders. Activity was measured by a 7-day, 46-item activity checklist. Overweight girls were more sedentary than non-overweight girls (p<.03), and non-overweight girls engaged in more vigorous physical activity than overweight girls (p<.03). For boys, there were no significant differences in activity. The regression analyses for vigorous activity yielded the largest total R2's (R2=.049 for overweight and R2=.27 for non-overweight.) The significant factor for overweight youth was greater athletic coordination (p<.01). For non-overweight youth, the significant factors were greater family support (p<.05), greater peer support (p<.001), fewer barriers (p<.03), and greater athletic coordination (p<.01). Correlates of physical activity vary by weight status of young people.
