Foreign And Domestic Bank Performances: An Ideal Decomposition Of Industry Dynamics, Yongil Jeon, Stephen M. Miller Nov 2002

Foreign And Domestic Bank Performances: An Ideal Decomposition Of Industry Dynamics, Yongil Jeon, Stephen M. Miller

Economics Working Papers

The aggregate performance of the banking industry depends on the underlying micro-level dynamics within that industry - adjustments within banks, reallocations between banks, entries of new banks, and exits of existing banks. Jeon and Miller (2002a) extend Bailey, Hulten, and Campbell (1992) and Haltiwanger (1997) to develop a generalized ideal dynamic decomposition. This paper illustrates the ideal dynamic decomposition with return on equity of foreign and domestic Korean commercial banks from 1994 to 2000. The overall performance of Korean banks largely reflects individual bank efficiencies, except immediately after the Asian financial crisis where restructuring played a more important role on …

Has Deregulation Affected Births, Deaths, And Marriages In The U.S. Commercial Banking Industry?, Yongil Jeon, Stephen M. Miller

Economics Working Papers

Regulatory change not seen since the Great Depression swept the U.S. banking industry beginning in the early 1980s and culminating with the Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act of 1994. Banking analysts anticipated dramatic consolidation with large numbers of mergers and acquisitions. Less well documented, but equally important, was the continuing entry of new banks, tempering the decline in the overall number of banking institutions. This paper examines whether deregulation affected bank new-charter, failure, and merger rates during the 1980s and 1990s after controlling for bank performance and state economic activity. We find evidence that intrastate deregulation stimulated new charters …

The Old Ball Game: Organization Of Nineteenth Century Professional Base Ball Clubs, Matthew Baker, Thomas J. Miceli, William J. Ryczek Nov 2002

The Old Ball Game: Organization Of Nineteenth Century Professional Base Ball Clubs, Matthew Baker, Thomas J. Miceli, William J. Ryczek

Economics Working Papers

The first professional base ball clubs came in two varieties: stock clubs, which paid their players fixed wages, and player cooperatives, in which players shared the proceeds after expenses. We argue that stock clubs were formed with players of known ability, while co-ops were formed with players of unknown ability. Although residual claimancy served to screen out players of inferior ability in co-ops, the process was imperfect due to the team production problem. Based on this argument, we suggest that co-ops functioned as an early minor league system where untried players could seek to prove themselves and eventually move up …

Faculty Publications

Filarial infections have been associated with the development of a strongly polarized Th2 host immune response and a severe impairment of mitogen-driven proliferation and type 1 cytokine production in mice and humans. The role of this polarization in the development of the broad spectra of clinical manifestations of lymphatic filariasis is still unknown. Recently, data gathered from humans as well as from immunocompromised mouse models suggest that filariasis elicits a complex host immune response involving both Th1 and Th2 components. However, responses of a similar nature have not been reported in immunologically intact permissive models of Brugia infection. Brucella abortus-killed …

Microstructure-Electrical Conductivity Relationships In Nanocrystalline Ceria Thin Films, Toshio Suzuki, Igor Kosacki, Harlan U. Anderson Nov 2002

Microstructure-Electrical Conductivity Relationships In Nanocrystalline Ceria Thin Films, Toshio Suzuki, Igor Kosacki, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study of nanocrystalline oxide thin film processing and influence of microstructure on the electrical properties of nanocrystalline Gd3+-doped CeO2 thin films was reported. Nanocrystalline films on sapphire substrate were prepared using a polymeric precursor spin coating technique. The grain size of these films depends upon the annealing temperatures and the dopant content, where higher content of dopant realized smaller grain size. The electrical conductivity of nanocrystalline Gd3+-doped CeO2 thin films was studied as a function of temperature and oxygen activity and correlated with the grain size. The results show that the electronic conductivity …

Book Review: Law And Religion: Current Legal Issues 2001 - Volume 4, S. I. Strong

Faculty Publications

As volume four of Current Legal Issues demonstrates, commentary on the interplay between law and religion in the UK is growing, although the subject still attracts nowhere near the level of attention it does in other countries. The newest addition to the literature constitutes a welcome advance to lawyers working or interested in the field. For example, many existing collections of essays on law and religion focus primarily on sociological issues. This compilation, on the other hand, contains many essays that stress truly legal dilemmas, although sociological, philosophical and other approaches to the question are still well represented among the …

High Frequency-Bandwidth Optical Technique To Measure Thermal Elongation Time Responses Of Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy Probes, Andres H. La Rosa, B. Biehler Nov 2002

High Frequency-Bandwidth Optical Technique To Measure Thermal Elongation Time Responses Of Near-Field Scanning Optical Microscopy Probes, Andres H. La Rosa, B. Biehler

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) probe elongates when light is coupled into it. The time response of this thermal process is measured here by a new optical technique that exploits the typical flat-apex morphology of the probe as a mirror in a Fabry-Perot type cavity. Pulsed laser light is coupled into the probe to heat up the tip, while another continuous wave laser serves to monitor the elongation from the interference pattern established by the reflections from the flat-apex probe and a semitransparent metal-coated flat sample. A quarter wave plate is introduced into the interferometer optical path in order …

Strong Founder Effect In Drosophila Pseudoobscura Colonizing New Zealand From North America, J. Reiland, S. Hodge, Mohamed A.F. Noor Nov 2002

Strong Founder Effect In Drosophila Pseudoobscura Colonizing New Zealand From North America, J. Reiland, S. Hodge, Mohamed A.F. Noor

Faculty Publications

The North American native species Drosophila pseudoobscura was first identified in New Zealand in the last few decades. Here, we have studied the genetic consequences of its spread across the Pacific Ocean. Using 10 microsatellites that are highly variable in North American populations, we found that the New Zealand population has substantially fewer alleles, a much lower average heterozygosity, and significantly different allele frequencies at these loci. We have discussed the relative sensitivity of these parameters for detecting the founding event. X-linked loci were more strongly differentiated between continents than autosomal loci, as reflected by larger changes in allele frequencies …

The Cauchy Problem And Stability Of Solitary-Wave Solutions For Rlw-Kp-Type Equations, Jerry L. Bona, Yue Liu, Michael M. Tom Nov 2002

The Cauchy Problem And Stability Of Solitary-Wave Solutions For Rlw-Kp-Type Equations, Jerry L. Bona, Yue Liu, Michael M. Tom

Faculty Publications

The Kadomtsev-Petviashvilli (KP) equation, (ut + ux + uux + uxxx )x + euyy = 0, (*) arises in various contexts where nonlinear dispersive waves propagate principally along the x-axis, but with weak dispersive effects being felt in the direction parallel to the y-axis perpendicular to the main direction of propagation. We propose and analyze here a class of evolution equations of the form (ut + ux, + upux + Lut)x + euyy = 0, (* *) which provides an alternative to Eq. (*) in the same way the regularized long-wave equation is related to the classical Korteweg-de …

Public Health Implications Of The Declining Calcium Intake In Female Adolescents From A Nigerian University, Blessing Ogochukwu Agoreyo, Ifeyinwa Flossy Obuekwe Nov 2002

Public Health Implications Of The Declining Calcium Intake In Female Adolescents From A Nigerian University, Blessing Ogochukwu Agoreyo, Ifeyinwa Flossy Obuekwe

Journal of International Women's Studies

The importance of calcium for strong bones has long been recognized. It is now also known that adequate calcium intake helps reduce high blood pressure and lessens the symptoms of premenstrual tension as well as possibly protecting against bowel cancer. Over the last several decades, researchers have learnt a great deal about how a nutritionally balanced diet during childhood and adolescence works to prevent the onset of damaging adult diseases. One long – lasting effect of nutritional imbalance during adolescence is osteoporosis, a bone-crippling disease characterized by low bone mass and an increased bone fragility. Once recognized primarily as an …

Participation Of Rural Women In Development: A Case Study Of Tsheseng, Thintwa, And Makhalaneng Villages, South Africa, M. Kongolo, O. O. Bamgose

Journal of International Women's Studies

This study investigates factors which influence limited participation in the development process by women in South Africa’s rural areas. The influence of government development policy, education and cultural values on rural women was sought and investigated in this study. The results suggest that most women in rural areas are illiterate. They lack initiatives, innovations and self-reliance attitudes. Women in rural areas are isolated, confined and marginalized through the non-interactive government policies on rural areas. These symptoms reflect a lack of structured development strategy to create needed opportunities in these areas. As a result, there is a high rate of unemployment, …

Cooking Soup To Writing Papers: A Journey Through Gender, Society And Self, Zenobia Chan Nov 2002

Cooking Soup To Writing Papers: A Journey Through Gender, Society And Self, Zenobia Chan

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper describes my roles as a housewife, previously, and a doctoral student, currently. It examines crossing the border from the family domain to the university domain from a gender perspective. When I was a housewife, I was stigmatised by society and without any prospects. As a doctoral student, I am considered a worthy woman and my life has been romanticized. The analogy of cooking soup represents my life as a housewife, while writing papers represents my life as a doctoral student. Describing this dramatic transition from seven years as a soup-cooking housewife, to a third-year, paper-writing, doctoral candidate, I …
