The Holy, Non-Christic Biblical Subtexts In Superman: The Movie (1978) And Superman Ii (1981), Anton K. Kozlovic

The sacred-secular parallels between Jesus Christ and Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman in Superman: The Movie (1978) and Superman II (1981) were explicated previously in JR&F. Despite the persuasive Christic subtext, the richness of the biblical parallels within these two SF films did not stop with just an alien Messiah. Further engineered biblical correspondences existed that complemented the Christic subtext and uprated the overall sanctity of the filmic narratives. Three areas of holy infranarratives were identified and explicated pertaining to: (a) divine figurations, (b) blessed parents, and (c) holy associates. Further research into this exciting field was recommended.

The U.S. military, under the guidance of the Secretary of Defense, is moving toward a new concept of military planning and operations that is agile and adaptable to the conflict at hand. The aim is to develop capabilities that can rapidly break an adversary’s will to fight and undermine the utility of asymmetric capabilities. The new concept called effects-based operations (EBO) encompasses processes, tools, and organizations that focus on planning, executing, and assessing military activities for the effects produced rather than merely tallying the number of targets destroyed. This research generates a method for easy comparison of national military doctrines as they pertain to peacekeeping operations by using the Conceptual Model of Peace Operations (CMPO) as an organizational framework. Microsoft Excel is utilized as an interface as a means for individuals or organizations to compare individual national peacekeeping doctrines on an independent framework. This project also utilizes graphing techniques to allow users to view more generalized comparisons of doctrine so conclusions might be more readily drawn with regards to specific areas of coverage, areas of doctrine needing to be more fully or less extensively addressed, and the political …

The U.S. relationship with China and the global war on terrorism are the two most significant strategic challenges faced by the Bush administration. Both are vital and complex; the way the administration manages them will shape American security for many years. While there is a growing literature on both key strategic issues, little analysis has been done on the intersection of the two. This monograph fills the gap as the author assesses how the war on terrorism has affected China. This thesis revolves around an Office of Naval Research (ONR) grant known as Virtual Environments for Training (VET). The primary goal is to determine the effectiveness of an immersive environment for training; the secondary goal is to compare the results of this study to a similar study conducted in an environment that is less immersive.

Effectiveness will be determined by the performance of trainees manning a virtual military checkpoint. A four-wall immersive environment employing cave technology will be compared to a three dimensional desktop version of the scenarios employed in the more immersive environment. In August of 1998 the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) of the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), approached Dr. Phillip Abraham of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) with the proposal for an annual workshop focusing on emerging concepts in decision-support systems for military applications. The proposal was considered timely by the ONR Logistics Program Office for at least two reasons. A Novel High-Cell-Density Protein Expression System Based On Ralstonia Eutropha, Sriram Srinivasan, Gavin C. Barnard, Tillman U. Gerngross

We describe the development of a novel protein expression system based on the industrial fermentation organism Ralstonia eutropha (formerly known as Alcaligenes eutrophus) NCIMB 40124. This new system over- comes some of the shortcomings of traditional Escherichia coli-based protein expression systems, particularly the propensity of such systems to form inclusion bodies during high-level expression. Using a proteomics approach, we identified promoters that can be induced by simple process parameters or medium compositions in high-density cell culture or shake flasks, respectively. By combining newly developed molecular biological tools with a high-cell-density fermentation process, we were able to produce high levels ( …
