The Culture Of Crime: Representations Of The Criminal In Eighteen-Century England, Daniel Gonzalez Jan 2002

The Culture Of Crime: Representations Of The Criminal In Eighteen-Century England, Daniel Gonzalez

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores how literary criminal narratives reflected public anxieties over the increasing commercialization of England during the early eighteenth century. It accounts for the popularity of the criminal in literature as well as public concerns about commercialization and the individuality it encouraged, revealing how these concerns were expressed in the most popular form of criminal narrative in this era, the criminal biography. This course seeks to introduce the various aspects of methodical, inductive Bible study, especially observation and interpretation. It intends, by study of Mark’s Gospel, to foster Bible study which values orderly procedure, direct personal contact with the text, analysis of relations which hold between text units, and recognition of the book as the crucial context for interpretation. The English Bible will serve as the text of entry for the study, with emphasis also on appropriate use of the Greek New Testament and “original language” skills and tools for interpreting the book of Mark.

Cases were children with birth defects whose mothers lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation. Controls were children whose mothers also lived within 10 miles of a hazardous waste site during gestation but did not have birth defects.
