The Spectrum Of Bipolar Disorder In Older Adults, Hui Xin Ng, Martha Sajatovic
The Spectrum Of Bipolar Disorder In Older Adults, Hui Xin Ng, Martha Sajatovic
Faculty Scholarship
The absolute number and relative proportion of individuals with older-age bipolar disorder (OABD) is expected to rise due to the global aging of the population, necessitating a greater understanding of the unique characteristics of OABD and the trajectory of aging with BD in order to improve the health span of people with BD. This review summarizes current knowledge on OABD, examining its clinical presentation, neurobiology, and treatment, as well as identifying key gaps and future directions for research. OABD is characterized by relatively greater cognitive impairment and somatic burden, despite potentially reduced mood symptom severity compared to younger-age bipolar disorder …

The Lived Experience Of Gay Men In The Generation Jones Cohort, Thomas Stacy Helton
The Lived Experience Of Gay Men In The Generation Jones Cohort, Thomas Stacy Helton
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Existing research lacks examination of the interplay between life histories and gay identities within the Generation Jones cohort, hindering our understanding of how individuals navigated the challenges of aging Specifically, we lack understanding of how identity formation, stigma, and historical trauma in light of sociocultural events—including the criminalization of homosexuality, the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the rise of digital connectivity—shaped self-concept, relationships, and resilience. This qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of gay men in the Generation Jones cohort, defined as those born between 1954 and 1965. Grounded in social identity theory, it asked how gay men in this cohort …
Strategies Financial Institutions Use To Mitigate Security Breaches For Mobile Customers, Steven F. Knese
Strategies Financial Institutions Use To Mitigate Security Breaches For Mobile Customers, Steven F. Knese
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mobile fraud attack rates are increasing rapidly. Financial institutions, cybersecurity managers, and regulators need effective strategies to reduce consumer financial harm and operational risk. Grounded in the cybernetics model, this qualitative, pragmatic inquiry identified the cybersecurity strategies that cybersecurity professionals use at financial institutions to mitigate data breaches for mobile customers accessing financial data. Data were collected from five cybersecurity professionals through semistructured interviews and from publicly available documents and guidance issued by financial institutions and standards bodies. Six significant themes emerged from thematic analysis: implementing multifactor authentication, deploying virtual private networks (VPNs), delivering user education, promoting regular account monitoring, …

The Gene Encoding Ornithine Decarboxylase For Putrescine Biosynthesis Is Essential For The Viability Of Fusobacterium Nucleatum, Shiqi Xu, Bibek G C, Alex Phan, Chenggang Wu
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative anaerobe associated with periodontitis and colorectal cancer. It secretes putrescine, a polyamine that promotes biofilm formation by oral co-colonizers and enhances the proliferation of cancer cells. However, the physiological importance of putrescine for F. nucleatum itself remains unexplored. Here, we show that putrescine biosynthesis, mediated by the ornithine decarboxylase gene oda, is essential for F. nucleatum viability. Deletion of oda was only possible when a functional copy was provided in trans, and CRISPR interference of oda expression resulted in complete growth defects. The essentiality of oda was conserved across multiple subspecies. Supplementation with …

Restorative Justice, Human Dignity, And The Capabilities Approach, Reed Mcfeely
Restorative Justice, Human Dignity, And The Capabilities Approach, Reed Mcfeely
Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy
As a value-driven and transformative approach to criminal justice, restorative justice is inherently philosophical. Despite this, however, its philosophical underpinnings remain underdeveloped. This manuscript argues for the necessity of grounding restorative justice in moral philosophy, specifically through the framework offered by Martha Nussbaum’s capabilities approach. The paper first addresses the fragmented nature of restorative justice values, suggesting a new uniform framework centered on respect, equality, agency, and active striving. It then explores what victims are materially owed in the restorative justice process, advancing Nussbaum’s list of basic capabilities as a foundation. However, the central aim of this manuscript transcends these …

Trust In Testimony: Standpoint Theory And Moral Reasoning, Ava Macdonald
Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy
Standpoint epistemology provides a case in which it would seem that moral reasoning, understood as different from moral theorizing, is not possible due to the epistemological asymmetry present between dominant and marginalized groups. However, I argue that this issue may be bridged through the testimony of the marginalized individual which must then be accepted and respected by their interlocutor, with consciousness-raising being a prerequisite for the giving and reception of this testimony.
Ethics Across The Curriculum: Application To Economics
Ethics Across The Curriculum: Application To Economics
Journal of Economics and Finance Education
We propose that the study of economics can be enhanced by students learning ethical reasoning within their economics courses. Our method for introducing more robust discussions of the relationship between ethics and economics is to incorporate principles and strategies from the “Ethics Across the Curriculum” program. The methods we used to enhance our own course can be adapted to any economics course and the resources we provide can help any economist become more comfortable with teaching ethical reasoning.

There's Chemistry Between Us: European Transition To Transition, Anže Dolinar
There's Chemistry Between Us: European Transition To Transition, Anže Dolinar
Fast Capitalism
Transition state of a chemical reaction is a particular configuration along the reaction coordinate. In chemistry this state is characterized by a specific property of irreversibility and corresponds to the highest energy level along a certain reaction coordinate. One of the qualities of transition state is its indetermination. In other words, we do not know what really goes on in that state, all we have are approximations.
What concerns me here is the transition state of nation states as a specific configuration corresponding to this chemical analogy. If this analogy holds true two equally important consequences will inevitably follow. Firstly, …

Western Mansions In The Gardens Of Perfect Brightness, Another History Of High Qing Sino-European Exchanges, Nicolas Woreth
Western Mansions In The Gardens Of Perfect Brightness, Another History Of High Qing Sino-European Exchanges, Nicolas Woreth
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
The Gardens of Perfect Brightness, the favorite residence of Chinese Emperors in the High Qing era (1683-1799), held mysteries that will remain forever concealed from the public eye after French and British imperialist forces looted it and burned it beyond repair during the Second Opium War (1856-1860). Behind the doors of the secret garden, scarcely open to anyone but the emperor, his wives, and servants, worked European artists and scientists. Most of them were Jesuit missionaries who served the emperor in the hope of gaining his favor and support for the spread of Christianity in China.
