Observations On Possible Myrmecophily In Stephanucha Pilipennis Kraatz (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) In Western Nebraska, M. J. Paulsen Mar 2002

Observations On Possible Myrmecophily In Stephanucha Pilipennis Kraatz (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) In Western Nebraska, M. J. Paulsen

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Little has been published on the life history of the five currently recognized species of Stephanucha Burmeister. Skelley (1991) published the most thorough treatment to date for S. thoracica Casey (recently synonymized with S. areata (F.) by Harpootlian 2001). Skelley located larvae in the mounds of the pocket gopher, Geomys pinetus Rafnesque, in Florida and was the first to describe an immature stage for the genus. Published accounts of Stephanucha species biology are consistent with respect to spring emergence, presence in sandy habitats, and a potential lack of adult feeding or liquid feeding (Lago et ul. 1979; Skelley 1991). Skelley …

A New Urgency About Anthrax: Recent Efforts To Prevent The Proliferation Of Biological Weapons In The Former Soviet Union, Jack M. Beard Mar 2002

A New Urgency About Anthrax: Recent Efforts To Prevent The Proliferation Of Biological Weapons In The Former Soviet Union, Jack M. Beard

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

The threat of biological weapons, once an obscure topic to most Americans, achieved new prominence and urgency in the United States with the anthrax letter attacks that followed the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. A number of infections traced to a handful of anthrax-laced letters focused unprecedented attention in America on the danger of biological weapons (BW). Coupled with continuing reports of attempts by terrorists to acquire weapons of mass destruction, this has made efforts to prevent BW proliferation a high priority for the U.S. government.

Notwithstanding the new prominence of the BW threat, the U.S. government recently withdrew …

Embryo Transfer In Beef Cattle, D. M. Marshall, J. A. Minyard Mar 2002

Embryo Transfer In Beef Cattle, D. M. Marshall, J. A. Minyard

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Embryo transfer allows one or more fertilized eggs (embryos) to be transferred from a donor female to other cows (recipients or surrogate mothers) for subsequent development and birth. Generally, the embryo transfer calf remains with its surrogate mother through weaning. Persons with adequate training and experience can perform embryo transfer with a reasonably high success rate. However, due to its relatively high cost, the use of embryo transfer to date has been limited mostly to increasing the reproductive rate of valuable cows from seedstock herds and to research applications. Most beef cows produce only one calf per year and fewer …

Heat Detection In Beef Cattle, Terry Goehring Mar 2002

Heat Detection In Beef Cattle, Terry Goehring

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

New techniques and cheaper products for estrous synchronization of beef cattle have increased the use of this management practice for both commercial and seedstock producers. Hand-in-hand with synchronization comes the need to accurately detect heat in cows and heifers. Heat detection is simply looking for changes in a cow's behavior caused by her coming into, or being in, standing heat. The most definite behavioral change is standing firmly while mounted, with the mounting/riding process repeated several times.

Determining Pasture Rents, Martin Beutler Mar 2002

Determining Pasture Rents, Martin Beutler

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

One of the more difficult decisions facing two parties in a pasture rental situation is determining the rent rate. Pasture rental charges often are based more on tradition than on a logical decision-making process. The rate must be deemed “fair” by both parties before a rental arrangement can be made. Several factors generally influence the rental value of pasture. Many of these factors are not directly related to the value of the available forage but to services and facilities which may or may not be present and/or provided by the landowner.

How Should Governments Address High Levels Of Natural Radiation And Radon--Lessons From The Chernobyl Nuclear Accident And Ramsar, Iran, S. M. Javad Mortazavi, M. Ghiassi-Nejad, Azam Niroomand-Rad, P. Andrew Karam, John R. Cameron

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

The authors discuss the high levels of natural background radiation in Ramsar, Iran, and offer data indicating that this has had little effect on the health of Ramsar's inhabitants. The authors then examine the implications their research could have for public health policy.

Bse: Risk, Uncertainty, And Policy Change, Enda Cummins, Pat Grace, Kevin Mcdonnell, Shane Ward

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

The authors discuss how, in our "risk society," a range of potential risks and uncertainties are associated with new technologies and new diseases, such as BSE. These risks bring with them worries about human health, while the ability to assess and manage new health scares is an essential skill for government and related industries.

An Adaptive Analysis Of Covariance Using Tree-Structured Regression, Gary L. Gadbury, H. K. Iyer, H. T. Schreuder

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this article, we propose an adaptive procedure for testing for the effect of a factor of interest in the presence of one or more confounding variables in observational studies. It is especially relevant for applications where the factor of interest has a suspected causal relationship with a response. This procedure is not tied to linear modeling or normal distribution theory, and it offers a valuable alternative to traditional methods. It is suitable for applications where a factor of interest is categorical, and the response is continuous. Confounding variables may be continuous or categorical. The method is comprised of two …
