Golden Rice: A Case Study In Intellectual Property Management And International Capacity Building, Stanley P. Kowalski, R. David Kryder Mar 2002

Golden Rice: A Case Study In Intellectual Property Management And International Capacity Building, Stanley P. Kowalski, R. David Kryder

Law Faculty Scholarship

In order for agricultural biotechnology (agri-biotech) to play a larger role in the development of sustainable agricultural systems, intellectual property (IP) rights management must be addressed. These issues are not limited to developing countries. With increased globalization, the management of agri-biotech IP rights affects both developing and industrialized countries. In industrialized countries, for example, IP rights risk management entails protection of inventions via strong patent portfolios. For developing countries, IP rights risk management includes the acquisition of rights requisite for the use of inventions essential to the basic welfare of the population. Strategies are needed to bridge these disparate IP …

Forage Potential Of Birdsfoot Trefoil, Edward K. Twidwell Mar 2002

Forage Potential Of Birdsfoot Trefoil, Edward K. Twidwell

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) is a perennial legume similar to alfalfa in growth habit. This species generally is adapted to the temperate climate of the northern part of the United States, where it is a hay and pasture crop of major importance. Birdsfoot trefoil is suitable for South Dakota, but it has not been planted in large acreages in the state primarily because of the popularity of alfalfa as a hay and pasture crop. Birdsfoot trefoil, however, has several characteristics that make it superior to alfalfa in certain situations. It deserves consideration as a possible South Dakota forage crop.

Interspecific- And Acclimation-Induced Variation In Levels Of Heat-Shock Proteins 70 (Hsp70) And 90 (Hsp90) And Heat-Shock Transcription Factor-1 (Hsf1) In Congeneric Marine Snails (Genus Tegula): Implications For Regulation Of Hsp Gene Expression, Lars Tomanek, George N. Somero Mar 2002

Interspecific- And Acclimation-Induced Variation In Levels Of Heat-Shock Proteins 70 (Hsp70) And 90 (Hsp90) And Heat-Shock Transcription Factor-1 (Hsf1) In Congeneric Marine Snails (Genus Tegula): Implications For Regulation Of Hsp Gene Expression, Lars Tomanek, George N. Somero

Biological Sciences

In our previous studies of heat-shock protein (hsp) expression in congeneric marine gastropods of the genus Tegula, we observed interspecific and acclimation-induced variation in the temperatures at which heat-shock gene expression is induced (Ton). To investigate the factors responsible for these inter- and intraspecific differences in Ton, we tested the predictions of the ‘cellular thermometer’ model for the transcriptional regulation of hsp expression. According to this model, hsps not active in chaperoning unfolded proteins bind to a transcription factor, heat-shock factor-1 (HSF1), thereby reducing the levels of free HSF1 that are available to bind …

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Kochia scoparia has been put up as hay for many years as an alternate feed for South Dakota livestock. Frequently, it is mixed with other hay or silage during winter feeding periods. The quality of kochia forage is extremely variable, however, and in certain situations kochia causes livestock poisoning. Many unknowns exist, so use caution when feeding this plant to livestock.

A Description Of Female, Adult Recreational Drug Users: A Sub-Analysis Of The Drugnet Survey, Leslie Bickett

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Drug abuse can be a serious, chronic, and relapsing health problem for both men and women. Among women, however, drug use and abuse present an array of different challenges to health and well-being. In addition, the health of women has been given less attention than the health of men. Little research has been conducted to identify and describe the invisible or hidden population of drug users, not abusers, who are not in treatment or incarcerated on drugrelated charges. The purpose of this study is to provide a descriptive and behavioral profile of adult, female, recreational drug users (i.e., not abusers). …

The Nmda Receptor M3 Segment Is A Conserved Transduction Element Coupling Ligand Binding To Channel Opening, Kevin Jones, Hendrika Vandongen, Antonius Vandongen Mar 2002

The Nmda Receptor M3 Segment Is A Conserved Transduction Element Coupling Ligand Binding To Channel Opening, Kevin Jones, Hendrika Vandongen, Antonius Vandongen

Department of Biology Faculty Publications

Ion channels alternate stochastically between two functional states, open and closed. This gating behavior is controlled by membrane potential or by the binding of neurotransmitters in voltage- and ligand-gated channels, respectively. Although much progress has been made in defining the structure and function of the ligand-binding cores and the voltage sensors, how these domains couple to channel opening remains poorly understood. Here we show that the M3 transmembrane segments of the NMDA receptor allosterically interact with both the ligand-binding cores and the channel gate. It is proposed that M3 functions as a transduction element whose conformational change couples ligand binding …
