A Multiobjective Approach Applied To The Protein Structure Prediction Problem, Richard O. Day Mar 2002

A Multiobjective Approach Applied To The Protein Structure Prediction Problem, Richard O. Day

Theses and Dissertations

Interest in discovering a methodology for solving the Protein Structure Prediction problem extends into many fields of study including biochemistry, medicine, biology, and numerous engineering and science disciplines. Experimental approaches, such as, x-ray crystallographic studies or solution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, to mathematical modeling, such as minimum energy models are used to solve this problem. Recently, Evolutionary Algorithm studies at the Air Force Institute of Technology include the following: Simple Genetic Algorithm (GA), messy GA, fast messy GA, and Linkage Learning GA, as approaches for potential protein energy minimization. Prepackaged software like GENOCOP, GENESIS, and mGA are in use to …

Using An Inductive Learning Algorithm To Improve Antibody Generation In A Single Packet Computer Defense Immune System, Russell J. Aycock Mar 2002

Using An Inductive Learning Algorithm To Improve Antibody Generation In A Single Packet Computer Defense Immune System, Russell J. Aycock

Theses and Dissertations

Coherent optical sources in the mid-infrared region (mid-IR) are important fundamental tools for infrared countermeasures and battlefield remote sensing. Nonlinear optical effects can be applied to convert existing near-IR laser sources to radiate in the mid-IR. This research focused on achieving such a conversion with a quasi-phase matched optical parametric oscillators using orientation-patterned gallium arsenide (OPGaAs), a material that can be quasi-phased matched by periodically reversing the crystal structure during the epitaxial growth process. Although non-linear optical conversion was not ultimately achieved during this research, many valuable lessons were learned from working with this material. This thesis reviews the theory …

Phylogenetic Relationships, Strain Diversity And Biogeography Of Tritimoviruses, Frank Rabenstein, Dallas L. Seifers, Jorg Schubert, Roy C. French, Drake C. Stenger Mar 2002

Phylogenetic Relationships, Strain Diversity And Biogeography Of Tritimoviruses, Frank Rabenstein, Dallas L. Seifers, Jorg Schubert, Roy C. French, Drake C. Stenger

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

North American and Eurasian isolates of Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV; genus Tritimovirus) and Oat necrotic mottle virus (ONMV; genus Rymovirus) were examined. Nine WSMV isolates differentially infected oat, barley, inbred maize line SDp2 and sorghum line KS56. The WSMV isolates clustered into groups based on phylogenetic analyses of the capsid protein (CP) cistron and flanking regions. WSMV isolates from the United States (US) and Turkey were closely related, suggesting recent movement between continents. Although more divergent, WSMV from Iran (WSMV-I) also shared a most recent common ancestor with the US and Turkish isolates. Another group of WSMV …
