Progressive Race Blindness?: Individual Identity, Group Politics, And Reform, Darren Lenard Hutchinson
Progressive Race Blindness?: Individual Identity, Group Politics, And Reform, Darren Lenard Hutchinson
UF Law Faculty Publications
Critical Race Theorists advance race consciousness as a positive instrument for political and legal reform. A growing body of works by left-identified scholars, however, challenges this traditional progressive stance toward race consciousness. After summarizing the contours of this budding literature, this Article criticizes the "progressive race blindness" scholarship on several grounds and offers an alternative approach to race consciousness that balances skepticism towards the naturalness of race with a healthy appreciation of the realities of racial subjugation and identity.

A Comparison Between The Effects Of Diltiazem And Isosorbide Dinitrate On Digoxin Pharmacodynamics And Kinetics In The Treatment Of Patients With Chronic Ischemic Heart Failure, Afaf A. Mahgoub, Azza H. El-Medany, Ahmed S. Abdulatif
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of an arteriolar dilator (diltiazem hydrochloride) versus a venodilator (isosorbide dinitrate) on digoxin kinetics and to estimate the efficacy and tolerability of these vasodilators when combined with digoxin for 10 days therapy in patients with congestive heart failure secondary to ischemic heart disease. METHODS: A double blind randomized cross over study was carried out to investigate the effect of an arteriolar dilator (diltiazem hydrochloride 180 mg/day orally) versus a venodilator (isosorbide dinitrate 30 mg/day orally) on digoxin kinetics (0.25 mg/day orally), after 10 days therapy in patients with heart failure due to ischemic heart disease. …
Chimerism In A Marine Protochordate, Anna Dorothea Sommerfeldt
Chimerism In A Marine Protochordate, Anna Dorothea Sommerfeldt
Doctoral
Many marine invertebrates bud vegetatively to produce a modular colony of individuals derived from a single zygote. Fusion of different colonies to produce a genetically composite entity (a chimera) is known from experiements on sponges, hydroids, corals, bryozoans and ascidians-groups which together dominate sessile faunas on marine hard substrates. In this study the fusion behaviour of the colonial ascidian Diplosoma literianum (Milne Edwards) has been investigate. Laboratory experiments were undertaken to assess the influence of relatedness on fusion behaviour in young and adult colonies. The degree of relatedness had a slight effect on the fusion behaviour; nevertheless unrelated colonies fused …

Multiple Isotopic Investigation Of Lake Sediments From Northern India, Alice Mwanda
Multiple Isotopic Investigation Of Lake Sediments From Northern India, Alice Mwanda
Masters Theses
Stable isotopes ratio of lake sediments can provide valuable environmental information. This possibility has been investigated using radiocarbon dated fossil lake sediments from the Himalayan region of Northern India. The chronology was established using Radiocarbon dating of both organic and inorganic fractions using (AMS). Inorganic ages are older than organic ages. Organic ages are expected to increase stratigraphically, however several anomalous old ages are found in the younger part of the sediments. Final chronology, determined using selected sensible ages identified two periods of sedimentation. The high sedimentation period is characterized by sedimentation rate of 0.8cm/yr and it fairly coincides with …
The Clinical Irrelevance And Scientific Invalidity Of The "Minority" Notion: Deleting It From The Social Science Vocabulary, Doris Wilkinson
The Clinical Irrelevance And Scientific Invalidity Of The "Minority" Notion: Deleting It From The Social Science Vocabulary, Doris Wilkinson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
A systematic socio-linguistic and historical analysis of the minority label reveals its multiple irregularities and imperfections. These encompass a misleading array of vastly dissimilar nationality or group designations and the erroneous comparison of behaviors and life styles with racial status. As it is currently applied in U.S. political culture and in a variety of disciplines including sociology and social work, the concept has virtually no substantive meaning nor reality-linked usefulness. A thorough appraisal of the consequences of the perpetual reliance on the notion demonstrates that it eradicates ethnic cultural diversity and ignores historical antecedents and the "lived" experiences of oppressed …

Protein-Protein Interactions And Muscle Cell Signaling Via Syntrophin, Shilpa A. Oak
Protein-Protein Interactions And Muscle Cell Signaling Via Syntrophin, Shilpa A. Oak
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Absence of dystrophin results in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a lethal neuromuscular d isorder that afflicts 1 in 3500 live male births. In the sarcolemma, dystrophin is associated with a complex of proteins and glycoproteins, known as the dystrophin glycoprotein complex. The DGC constituents are dystrophin, a-dys troglycan, b-dystroglycan, syntrophin, a-sarcoglycan, b-sarcoglycan, g-sarcoglycan, d-sarcoglycan, and sarcospan. Not al l of these are single protein species. The syntrophins consists of a group of three homologous proteins composed of acidic (a) and basic (b) components. Syntrophins are known to self-associate to form oligomers.
In this dissertation, syntrophin's oligomerization and its interactions with …
Computational Simulation Of The Docking Of Prochlorothrix Hollandica Plastocyanin To Photosystem I: Modeling The Electron Transfer Complex, George S. Bullerjahn, Neocles B. Leontis, Eugene Myshkin
Computational Simulation Of The Docking Of Prochlorothrix Hollandica Plastocyanin To Photosystem I: Modeling The Electron Transfer Complex, George S. Bullerjahn, Neocles B. Leontis, Eugene Myshkin
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
We have used several docking algorithms (GRAMM, FTDOCK, DOT, AUTODOCK) to examine protein-protein interactions between plastocyanin (Pc)/photosystem I (PSI) in the electron transfer reaction. Because of the large size and complexity of this system, it is faster and easier to use computer simulations than conduct x-ray crystallography or nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. The main criterion for complex selection was the distance between the copper ion of Pc and the P700 chlorophyll special pair. Additionally, the unique tyrosine residue (Tyr(12)) of the hydrophobic docking surface of Prochlorothrix hollandica Pc yields a specific interaction with the lumenal surface of PSI, thus providing …
Ethical And Legal Issues In Singapore Biomedical Research, Taiwo A. Oriola
Ethical And Legal Issues In Singapore Biomedical Research, Taiwo A. Oriola
Washington International Law Journal
In 2000, Singapore established the national "Bioethics Advisory Committee" to examine the ethical, moral, social, and legal implications of life sciences and biotechnology. The Committee will examine numerous topics, including genetic discrimination, cloning, and stem cell research. The Committee is expected to release its frast set of recommendations concerning stem cell research in the first half of 2002. This paper proposes that leveraging Singapore into a world-class biomedical research center will entail synchronizing the relevant areas of its legal ethics infrastructure and culture with that of the major players in the global biotechnology industry. Conversely, adhering to prevailing local ethical …
