Building Citizenship: Service-Learning And Student Learning, William D. Morgan Jun 2002

Building Citizenship: Service-Learning And Student Learning, William D. Morgan

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Even the most casual observer of the American news media could walk away with the impression that there are hosts of negative trends, ranging from a drop in the percentage of people who vote, to an increase in political alienation. Some of these are the result of marketing efforts conducted by groups who have a vested interest in making things look worse, and some of this may be the result of the type of news that is covered, with the guiding philosophical perspective being "if it bleeds it leads." Nonetheless, these problems are real. As Jim Wallis (1994) notes, '''Things …

Biennial Thistle (Muck, Plumeless, Scotch, Bull), Leon J. Wrage, Paul O. Johnson Jun 2002

Biennial Thistle (Muck, Plumeless, Scotch, Bull), Leon J. Wrage, Paul O. Johnson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Biennial thistles produce seedlings during the summer and fall. Plants overwinter as rosettes and produce a flower stalk the next spring, seed, and die. Musk and plummeless are the most serious of the biennials. They produce a heavy seed crop and seedling vigor is very good. Treatments suggested have provided over 90% control into the next season and have reduced seedling emergence considerably during the next year.

Insect Pest Management Alternatives, Murdick J. Mcleod Jun 2002

Insect Pest Management Alternatives, Murdick J. Mcleod

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Managing insect pests has changed significantly since the introduction of inexpensive synthetic insecticides. Making insect management decisions is easier. Traditional methods of insect management such as crop rotation, cultural control, and use of resistant varieties are relied upon less frequently because insecticides are so effective. However, insecticide use has negative aspects such as insecticide resistance, resurgence of pest species, and harmful effects on non-target organisms. These problems as well as recent public concern over the use of synthetic chemicals in agricultural production systems are encouraging the re-evaluation of traditional methods of insect pest management.

Alfalfa Disease Management, Dale J. Gallenberg Jun 2002

Alfalfa Disease Management, Dale J. Gallenberg

To address these common complaints, consider the following options for choosing, using, cleaning, and disposing of gloves.

Canola Production, Kathleen Grady Jun 2002

Canola Production, Kathleen Grady

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Canola is an edible form of rapeseed developed by Canadian plant breeders in the 1970s. Rapeseed and canola are members of the mustard family, which also includes tame and wild mustard, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and turnip. The term “canola” was registered in 1979 by the Western Canadian Oilseed Crushers Association as the name for rapeseed varieties with genetically modified oil composition and lowered glucosinolates. Canola varieties must have less than 2% erucic acid in the processed oil and less than 30 micromoles of glucosinolates per gram of oil-free meal. The lowered levels of these two seed components enable the oil …

Forage Yield And Quality Of Multileaflet Alfalfa, Edward K. Twidwell, Nancy J. Thiex, John L. Skogberg

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

There has been interest among private companies in the past five years in producing multifoliolate or “multileaflet” alfalfa varieties. Conventional varieties have only three leaflets per leaf while multileaflet varieties may have plants that possess five, seven, or even nine leaflets per leaf. Although the multileaf trait of alfalfa has been known for more than 50 years, research has been limited. Recent interest has led to the development of about 10 multileaflet varieties. The promotion of these varieties has generated interest among forage and livestock producers in the potential benefits of these varieties over conventional varieties.

Rinsing your pesticide containers also provides additional benefits such as: • Saving money by allowing you to use the pesticide remaining in the container. • Reducing the potential for ground and surface water contamination. • Allowing the containers to be recycled or landfilled.

Factors Predicting Distress At Marital Therapy Onset, Joseph J.H. Horak Jun 2002

Factors Predicting Distress At Marital Therapy Onset, Joseph J.H. Horak

Dissertations

Higher levels of distress at marital therapy onset predict poorer treatment outcomes in several studies. This study selected nine variables to determine their ability to predict distress at marital therapy onset. The first two predictor variables, shame (measured by the Internalized Shame Scale; Cook, 2000) and expressive atmosphere in the family of origin (measured by the Family of Origin Expressive Atmosphere Scale; Yelsma, Hovestadt, Anderson, & Nilsson, 2000), were chosen from the literature and studies that considered these variables to be related to marital distress. The remaining seven sociodemographic predictor variables—(1) parental divorce as a child, (2) pregnancy before marriage, …

Detailed studies of stream N uptake were conducted in a prairie reach and gallery forest reach of Kings Creek on the Konza Prairie Biological Station. Nutrient uptake rates were measured with multiple short-term enrichments of NO3− and NH4+ at constant addition rates in the spring and summer of 1998. NH4+ uptake was also measured with 15N-NH4+ tracer additions and short-term unlabeled NH4+ additions at 12 stream sites across North America. Concurrent addition of a conservative tracer was used to account for dilution in all experiments. NH4+ uptake rate per unit area (Ut) was positively correlated to nutrient concentration across all …

All Master's Theses

The relationship between Balinese long-tailed macaques, Bali's cultural settings, and Bali's physical settings was studied. A Geographical Information System (GIS) database was developed and analyzed to determine if forest corridors exist on Bali that may provide habitat connectivity between 42 Balinese long-tailed macaque troops. The GIS database was also analyzed to determine if the landscape type that has the highest percentage of overlap with the 42 Balinese long-tailed macaque home range sites is forest. The results indicate that connectivity between troops located within Bali's western region is significantly higher than that for troops located in Bali's eastern region. The results …

Mechanisms Of Autoantigen Cleavage During Cell Death, Xiwei Wu Jun 2002

Mechanisms Of Autoantigen Cleavage During Cell Death, Xiwei Wu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Specific intracellular autoantigens targeted by autoantibodies in systemic autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases undergo posttranslational modifications, such as cleavage, during cell death that could potentially enhance their immunogenicity. In light of the increasing interest in the immunological consequences of defective clearance of apoptotic cells, we explored whether autoantigens cleaved during apoptosis undergo an additional wave of proteolysis as apoptosis progresses to secondary necrosis in the absence of phagocytosis. Jurkat T cells treated with different apoptosis inducers underwent a rapid apoptosis that gradually progressed to secondary necrosis. During the initial apoptotic stages, several nuclear autoantigens, including PARP, Topo I, and LEDGF/p75 …

Inducible Gene Expression In Cell Cultures And In Microencapsulated Cells, Yong Yu Jun 2002

Inducible Gene Expression In Cell Cultures And In Microencapsulated Cells, Yong Yu

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The mifepristone-regulated transcriptional activation system provides a means to exogenously control gene expression in transformed mammalian cells in a temporal and spatial fashion. Such a promoter activation system consists of three components: The first of these is a steroidal inducer drug, mifepristone. This drug binds to the second component, a chimeric transcription factor complex, consisting of the mutant human progesterone receptor fused to the yeast GAL4 DNA-binding domain and the Herpes simplex virus protein VP 16 activation domain. The third component is a synthetic promoter, consisting of a series of GAL4 recognition sequences upstream of the adenovirus major late E1B …

The Role Of Psychologists In Primary Care: An Integrative Curriculum, Gary Charles Hawley Jun 2002

The Role Of Psychologists In Primary Care: An Integrative Curriculum, Gary Charles Hawley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Psychologists have been service providers in the health care sector for many years. They are consistently recognized as valued members of health care teams but are not frequently included as primary care providers. Integrated primary care services that include psychologists are a positive step toward achieving a comprehensive model of patient care. The biopsychosocial model is suggested to supplant the current biomedical model for health and wellness conceptualization. Psychologists are trained in the dynamic interplay between biological, psychological, and social domains. However, education at the graduate level for psychologists working specifically in primary care has not been well conceptualized, developed …

Striatal Dopamine Release By Serotonergic Terminals In The Dopamine-Depleted Rat, Kristi Suzanne Rau Jun 2002

Striatal Dopamine Release By Serotonergic Terminals In The Dopamine-Depleted Rat, Kristi Suzanne Rau

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Parkinson’s disease (PD) results from severe dopamine (DA) neuron loss within the substantia nigra pars compacta. In an effort to replace the diminished DA levels, L-dopa, the precursor of DA, is administered. Although the most commonly prescribed medication, the site(s) where L-dopa is converted to DA is not well understood. Three likely striatal sites meeting the requirement of amino acid decarboxylase presence include remaining dopaminergic neurons, serotonergic terminals, and striatal intemeurons.

Studies have shown that serotonin (5-HT) neurons are capable of DA synthesis following exogenous L-dopa administration. In addition, striatal hyperinnervation by serotonergic dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) axon terminals occurs …

Effect Of Electrode Size, Shape, And Placement On Electrical Current And Subject Comfort During Electrical Stimulation, Bonnie J. Forrester Jun 2002

Effect Of Electrode Size, Shape, And Placement On Electrical Current And Subject Comfort During Electrical Stimulation, Bonnie J. Forrester

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Six healthy subjects were studied to determine the optimal size, shape and placement of stimulating electrodes during the application of electrical stimulation (ES) to the biceps, quadriceps, and tibialis anterior muscles. Subjects were recruited to allow for diversity in age, sex, and skin pigmentation. Subjects sat in a custom designed multi-positional chair, which allowed precise positioning of each extremity. After determining the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the muscle and careful determination of the motor point, ES, with a biphasic square wave of 300 ms duration and a frequency of 30 Hz, was used to bring the muscle to 10% …

The Relationship Between The Osteonal Cement Line And Bone Strength, Avery Kazuhiro Egerer Jun 2002

The Relationship Between The Osteonal Cement Line And Bone Strength, Avery Kazuhiro Egerer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Bone includes many structural and chemical components which provide both flexibility and strength. One such structure is the cement line, a 1-5 μm-thin structure located primarily in compact bone. Past research has correlated the pathological condition of “shin splints” with the micro-damage of bone, which often follows cement lines. It has been suggested that cement lines have rather paradoxical properties. Upon fatigue fracture of bone, microcracks often travel along cement lines and become trapped. This trapping and subsequent dispersion of energy have been hypothesized to prevent a complete fracture from occurring, extending bone life. Cement lines have been implicated in …

Carte Blanche For Cruelty: The Non-Enforcement Of The Animal Welfare Act, Katharine M. Swanson Jun 2002

Carte Blanche For Cruelty: The Non-Enforcement Of The Animal Welfare Act, Katharine M. Swanson

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Note explores both the judicial and administrative underenforcement of the Animal Welfare Act in protecting the welfare of laboratory animals used for purposes of experimentation. Specifically, the Note suggests that judicial underenforcement is borne as a result of the difficulties of lodging a private cause of action under the Act or gaining standing under the alternative statutory scheme of the Administrative Procedure Act. It further suggests administrative underenforcement in describing the promulgated regulations of the Act as inadequate and the lack of self-policing mechanisms. Finally, the Note suggests some ways that enforcement can be made more effective in these …

Dirty Coal : Voluntary International Environmental Agreements And Sustainable Development In The People's Republic Of China, Paul, G. Harris, Chihiro Udagawa

CAPS Working Paper Series

Agenda 21 is the voluminous policy document that emanated from the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. Using a brief case study of China’s energy use—specifically its use of coal—this article illustrates how the objectives of Agenda 21 are reflected in China’s economic development policies and practices. We address these kinds of questions: Has China endeavoured to implement environmentally sustainable development, as reflected in the chapters of Agenda 21? What does the case of energy use tell us about the utility of Agenda 21 objectives in China and other developing countries? What are some of the political and …
