2002 (12th) Report Of The Nou Records Committee, Joel G. Jorgensen
Nebraska Bird Review
The functions and methods of the NOU Records Committee are described in its bylaws (NOU Records Committee 1986). The committee's purpose is to provide a procedure for documenting unusual bird sightings and to establish a list of all documented birds for Nebraska. THE OFFICIAL LIST OF THE BIRDS OF NEBRASKA was first published in 1988 (NOU Records Committee 1988) and has been appended eleven times (Mollhoff 1989, Grenon 1990, Grenon 1991, Gubanyi 1996a, Gubanyi 1996b, Gubanyi 1996c, Brogie 1997, Brogie 1998, Brogie 1999). An update of the OFFICIAL LIST OF THE BIRDS OF NEBRASKA was first published in 1997 (NOU …

A mass of dark water, at times exceeding 60 km in diameter and spinning slowly in a clockwise eddy, occupied most of the Florida Bight between January and March 2002, capturing the attention of fishermen, the public, and government agencies. The “black water,” as it was dubbed in the national and international press (for example, see http://www.naplesnews.com), was first reported by fishery pilots in the Florida Bight in January 2002. Fishermen reported that fish were not to be found in the black water and there were dead sponges in the vicinity, suggesting that the area could be a “dead zone” …

Policymaking Network Of The Iron-Triangle Subgovernment For Licensing Hazardous Waste Facilities, F. Gregory Hayden
Policymaking Network Of The Iron-Triangle Subgovernment For Licensing Hazardous Waste Facilities, F. Gregory Hayden
College of Business: Faculty Publications
The purposes here are to explain the linkage of (1) economic methodology, (2) corporate networks, and (3) federal court decisions in the licensing of hazardous waste facilities and to recognize the opportunity the combination of the three provides for institutional economists. The United States has the best and most comprehensive set of laws we might expect from a legislative process in order to prevent human disease, loss of property, and ecological system destruction from hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste. Yet the licensing process and assessment that has grown out of that legislation has not produced the protection expected. The waste …

First Recipients Of Anthropological Doctorates In The United States, 1891-1930, Jay H. Bernstein
Publications and Research
This article seeks to show the origins of the professionalization of anthropology by examining early doctoral dissertations in this field and their authors. The bibliography consists of citations with biographical details of the authors, when known, of doctoral dissertations in anthropology from United States educational institutions up to 1930. One hundred twenty-four citations are given in all, representing 18 institutions. Forty-one of the dissertations were not written for degrees in anthropology. Besides documenting the existence of anthropological work outside recognized graduate programs of anthropology, the bibliography provides a demographic profile of anthropology and shows the distribution of subdiscipline concentrations and …

Sweetclover Production And Management, Edward K. Twidwell, John U. Thomson, Regg D. Neiger
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Sweetclover was introduced into the United States from southeastern Asia in the early 1700s. As late as 1910 it was legislated against as a weed in some states. We now know that sweetclover is valuable for hay, silage, pasture, seed, soil improvement, and as a source of nectar and pollen for honey bees.

Use A Microwave Oven To Determine Moisture Content Of Forages, Edward K. Twidwell, John J. Wagner, Nancy J. Thiex
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Knowing the moisture content of forages at the time of harvest and storage is essential for making and preserving high-quality hay and silage. Knowing the moisture content of stored forages is important for accurate ration formulation. A squeeze test, which involves squeezing forage into a ball and then guessing the moisture content, is a common method of determination. This method is rapid, but it lacks precision. Resistance-type moisture testers estimate moisture as a measure of electrical resistance. These devices provide estimates rapidly, but they usually are expensive (about $100 to $150) and vary in accuracy. A portable, electric drying unit …
