The Characteristics Of High School Transition Programs That Assist Learning Disabled Students To Succeed At The Post-Secondary Level, Julia Lynn Mcnair
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
When students with learning disabilities (LD) move from a high school environment in which they are often carefully guided to a setting in post-secondary education, where they are expected to achieve on their own, they may encounter transition difficulties.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the transition programs in place in high school for six successful students with learning disabilities who were enrolled in an institution on a post-secondary level and to measure the effectiveness of the practices of those programs in conjunction with internal characteristics that students brought with them to that environment. The outcome of the …
The Role Of Outdoor Recreation In Family Enrichment, Patti A. Freeman, Ramon B. Zabriskie
The Role Of Outdoor Recreation In Family Enrichment, Patti A. Freeman, Ramon B. Zabriskie
Faculty Publications
The family is the fundamental unit in society and perhaps the oldest and most important of all human institutions. Several studies have indicated a positive correlation between strong, successful families and family participation in outdoor recreational activities. This paper addresses the role of structured outdoor recreation programming in family enrichment. Findings from two studies based in the United States are presented: one on the effect of a one–day family outdoor adventure program on parental and child perceptions of family functioning and the other from a qualitative inquiry into the meaning of family residential camping experiences. The first study collected both …

"Woman Arise!": Political Work In The Writings Of Lu Dalton, Sheree Maxwell Bench
Theses and Dissertations
In 1872, Mormon plural wife, educator, and suffragist Lucinda Lee Dalton began writing fiery political essays and insightful poetry for the Woman's Exponent from her small community in southern Utah. Through her writings Dalton endeavors to shape the opinions of Exponent readers by working within public discourse toward the goal of equality for women. At times both optimistic and troubled, she uses the rhetorical strategies of humor, irony, reason, identification, and persuasion to educate men and women on disparities and to encourage women to participate actively in their own emancipation. She often engages in a dialogical process with other writers …

Alternative Solutions To The Child Protective Services Staffing Crisis: Innovations From Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, Michelle Graef, Megan E. Potter
Alternative Solutions To The Child Protective Services Staffing Crisis: Innovations From Industrial/ Organizational Psychology, Michelle Graef, Megan E. Potter
Center on Children, Families, and the Law (and Related Organizations): Publications
Several years ago we conducted an informal telephone survey of 53 child protective services (CPS) agencies, both state and county administered, to obtain a broad snapshot of what methods agencies across the country were using to select new CPS staff. Our goal was to learn what measures or indicators were included in these hiring decisions, with the hope of collaborating across agency lines to develop new approaches. Our results surprised us: Many jurisdictions invested minimally in the recruitment and selection of new CPS staff, yet they clearly expected new CPS workers to achieve high performance after some (varying) amounts of …

"We are all segregated in the prison of class," mused turn-of-the-century literature professor Vida Dutton Scudder. "More than we recognize, our inner life is shaped by the traditions of the group to which we happen to belong; and until we escape from such prison, at least through imagination, or better far through personal contacts, our culture is bound to remain tragically cramped and incomplete" (On Journey 67-68). In innovative literature courses, Scudder offered college students escapes from their class prisons through "imagination." She facilitated "personal contacts" by encouraging students to work with people of other classes and races in inner-city …
A Model Of Student Learning In Community Service Field Placements, Laura Dreuth, Martha Dreuth-Fewell
A Model Of Student Learning In Community Service Field Placements, Laura Dreuth, Martha Dreuth-Fewell
Service Learning, General
In the USA, many universities and colleges integrate student classroom learning with interaction in the community. Educators in pre-professional programs recognize the importance of understanding how students integrate community service learning with professional practice. Yet, missing from this body of literature is a discussion of the effects of service learning on social work undergraduate students. This article provides insight into the student experience as expressed in the voices of pre-service social workers that completed community service field placements in the USA. The findings suggest a developmental model of learning with common themes that progressed from basic understanding to integration. The …

Current Issues In The Changing Roles And Practices Of Community Economic Development Lawyers, Susan R. Jones
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
This Article, part of a symposium entitled "Lawyering for a New Democracy," explores current issues related to the changing roles of public interest lawyers engaged in Community Economic Development (CED) in a new democracy. After discussing current issues and trends in CED practice, the author concludes that CED is inherently privatized and is becoming more so with the national emphasis on economic self-sufficiency. The author provides lessons from law school clinical practice of enhanced strategic collaborations and highlights current trends and issues involving technology, leadership development, community organizing, asset accumulation, and social capital. Furthermore, leadership development and community organizing are …

Confidentiality, Consulation, And The Child Client, Theo S. Liebmann
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Part I of this Article uses several examples from actual cases to illustrate that many of the statutes, ethical mandates, and representational standards which govern the actions of lawyers for children often implicitly require an expertise in mental health that can be obtained only through consultation with mental health professionals. Part II examines what confidentiality duty lawyers for diminished capacity children owe their clients, and under what conditions ethical rules might permit the disclosure of confidential information by such lawyers to consulting mental health professionals. Part II concludes that the disclosure of confidential information to a mental health consultant is …

Family courts are underfunded and overwhelmed, and the quality of representation provided by counsel in family court cases is problematic. This article discusses what role law schools can play in promoting family court reform. It argues that law school involvement in family court is consistent with the law school’s core missions of education, research, and public service. The article illustrates how law schools can he involved in family court reform by discussing interdisciplinary projects of the Center for Children, Families and the Law of Hofstra University and North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health Systems. Doing Good Science Without Sacrificing Good Values: Why The Heuristic Paradigm Is The Best Choice For Social Work, Jessica Heineman-Pieper, Katherine Tyson Mccrea, Martha Heineman Pieper
Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
Social work today faces a crucial watershed: Will the field continue to promulgate unsound and detrimental beliefs about social work research and knowledge, or will the field fully embrace the heuristic paradigm and thereby realize its true potential as a first-rate science committed to humanistic ideals? Proponents of unsound and detrimental beliefs have obscured the choice for social workers by systematically and thoroughly misrepresenting the heuristic paradigm, making unwarranted and misleading claims for the paradigms to which it is opposed (logical empiricism and relativism), and confusing the issues at stake for the field. Accordingly, this article helps social workers recognize …
Dealing With Complex Evidence Of Domestic Violence: A Primer For The Civil Bench, Jane C. Murphy, Jane H. Aiken
Dealing With Complex Evidence Of Domestic Violence: A Primer For The Civil Bench, Jane C. Murphy, Jane H. Aiken
All Faculty Scholarship
New laws and policies aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence have been adopted across the country throughout the last twenty years. The legal approaches taken to protect battered women and control family violence have brought about significant changes in family law. New laws include statutes permitting civil protection or restraining orders, and laws requiring that domestic violence be considered in custody and visitation decisions. Both of these types of statutory reforms can provide protection to adult victims of domestic violence and their children. Evaluating a parent’s fitness by considering past acts of violence to other family members results in …

From Here To Diversity : Ethnicity In The National Health Service, Nicholas Richard Johns
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Nearly twenty years after the ground-breaking report by Brent Community Health Council (CHC) (1981) into the standard of health care provided to minority ethnic communities, there is continuing evidence of failure on the part of the National Health Service (NHS). One of the ways in which the New Labour government has sought to address such inadequacies in public services has been to increase the numbers of minority ethnic people in the workforce. The central argument of this thesis is that the notion of 'ethnic diversity' has not been adequately defined, and that the practical implications of diversity may be the …

Oral history - and spoken word collections generally - are assuming increasing importance in digital libraries as the storage, transmission and reproduction infrastructure improves. This paper describes three synergistic approaches to user needs analysis, explains how they are being applied to guide the design of systems to provide access oral history collections (using a s test bed the Shoah Foundations collection of over 50,000 videotaped oral history interviews), presents preliminary results from so -called “discount requirements analysis” and an analysis of “early access” requests, and draws some design implications. The results show a wide variety of users and uses of …
