Factors Which Influence Faculty Attitudes And Perceptions Of Distance Education In Analytical Subject Areas, Jeffrey G. Sumrall

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study focuses on current faculty attitudes and perceptions of distance education. A thorough review of literature indicates that faculty members are critical elements of distance education delivery and that certain factors (tenure, departmental incentives, gender, age) influence faculty participation. The main hypothesis being investigated is whether or not the analytical nature of the course is in fact the prime indicator in faculty participation. Faculty members from three randomly chosen SREB member institutions were surveyed. The purpose for choosing SREB member institutions for the population was for generalizing the findings to higher education institutions throughout the Southeastern United States. The …

Oh, What A Tangled Web-Site We Weave When First We Practice, Elizabeth Reynolds, James Reynolds

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Current emphases on computer technology have prompted a naive desire to use whatever is new regardless of its appropriateness to educational outcomes. Use of College level Web-based instruction has unearthed a variety of problems: misapplication of software, misplaced attempts to adapt traditional instruction to the Web, lack of teacher support, access and time difficulties, financial barriers, spatial/gender differences, and counterproductive approaches to learning that are unsystematic and independent versus organized, social, and cultural. The present study examined technological barriers to college student's achievement as well as student preferences regarding an optional Web-based ancillary designed to promote student achievement in an …

Models Of Inclusion: Standing At The Cross Roads. Building Inclusive Child Care Through Child Care Development Funds, Eileen M. Brennan, Shane Ama, Elizabeth Haran Caplan, Olivia Warfield, Sherry Archer

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 has produced a growing recognition that children with disabilities have the same rights as other children to participate in community-based child care settings (Whitney, Grozinsky, & Poppe, 1999). But even a legal mandate is not sufficient to guarantee access to realistic and suitable child care options for every family, particularly those having children with emotional or behavioral disorders (National Child Care Information Center [NCCIC], 1997). The presentation addressed governmental policy and planning efforts to include children with emotional or behavioral challenges in settings with typically developing children. Particularly, presenters …

The Voices Of Survivors Documentary Using Patient Narrative To Educate Physicians About Domestic Violence, Christina Nicolaidis Jan 2002

The Voices Of Survivors Documentary Using Patient Narrative To Educate Physicians About Domestic Violence, Christina Nicolaidis

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article describes a method of developing physician education materials using analysis of domestic violence patient experiences and patients' descriptions of their experiences. The process began with interviews of 21 domestic violence survivors, focusing on what they wanted to teach physicians. Qualitative analysis of these interviews identified 4 main themes regarding what survivors wanted physicians to understand about life in an abusive relationship: that domestic violence is universal, that it is more than just physical assaults, that it is all about power and control, and that it affects the entire family. Because what survivors wanted from physicians differed depending on …

An Auto/Ethnographical Study On The Effect Of Context On The Experience Of Being A Volunteer With Refugees, Fran Price

Theses : Honours

This study uses a critical social and feminist framework to explore the effect of context on the experience of being a volunteer with refugees. It is presented in an auto/ethnographical style, blending my own storying with the stories of other volunteers. My interest in this topic evolved as a result of my own personal experiences in volunteering with refugees in which I perceived certain contextual aspects to have had an impact on my identity and volunteering experiences. This study is therefore an attempt to make sense of my own experiences and to share in the experiences of other volunteers. Informal …

Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry, Elizabeth A. Curry, Deborah Cunningham Walker

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

“Demonstrating Collegiality: A Co-Constructed Narrative Inquiry” seeks to define a collegial relationship through the experiences of two first year doctoral students at a large state-supported university. The techniques used to develop the co-constructed narrative parallel the authors’ development of a collaborative relationship. Using autoethnographic essays and interactive interviews, the authors co-construct several narratives that describe the process of moving from a friendly, social relationship to a scholarly, collaborative relationship, as well as the process of moving from peer reviewers to co-authors. An introductory narrative frames the paper; each of the “interior” narratives is accompanied by an extensive analytic introduction and …

A Feminist/Interactionist Approach To Disability, Michael E. Grossman Jan 2002

A Feminist/Interactionist Approach To Disability, Michael E. Grossman

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

People with disabilities are the most oppressed social group in the world. According to some estimates, 500 million people are victims of disability oppression. People with disabilities, as well as society, have undergone radical changes over the last 30 years. Activists, legislators, academics, and families of people with disabilities, have been largely responsible in pointing out the social realities of the disability experience. People with disabilities continue to experience a tremendous amount of discrimination however, and the stigma of being a person with a disability is slow to fade. The current thesis surveys the literature on disability, demonstrating the manner …
