The Role Of Architecture And Sociology In Organizational Development, Ronald Smith Jun 2002

The Role Of Architecture And Sociology In Organizational Development, Ronald Smith

Sociology Faculty Research

Architects and sociologists are increasingly realizing that the two professions have close and important linkages. Certainly the two directly contribute to organizational development. Architectural sociologists draw upon their organizational theories and their research to describe how the physical environment reflects managerial philosophies and also to analyze how the physical environment subsequently impacts the participants, processes, and outcomes of the organization (Becker and Steel, 1995). Sociologists could be of assistance to the architect on matters of building and landscape design, choice of furnishings, layout of work stations, locations of conference and break rooms, decision about who receives valued space, public perceptions …

"Planned Barriers" Against Destructive Psychological Processes In Care Organizations, Gurli Fyhr Jun 2002

"Planned Barriers" Against Destructive Psychological Processes In Care Organizations, Gurli Fyhr

The Qualitative Report

This is the first study in a long-term qualitative, theory generating, research project aimed at uncovering conditions that facilitate development of destructive psychological processes in care organizations. Special focus was put on three previously identified problem areas, i.e., staff privileges, conflicting educational traditions/cultures among staff, and psychological reparative work on the part of the staff. A special approved home for teenage boys with serious psychosocial, drug and criminal problems was studied. The strategy used was grounded theory together with abductive reasoning. Data were collected using institutional documents, questionnaires and individual psychotherapeutic interviews. In spite of a target group with serious …

Leading Organizational Change: A Comparison Of County And Campus Views Of Extension Engagement, Nancy K. Franz, Randall S. Peterson, Amber L. Dailey Jun 2002

Leading Organizational Change: A Comparison Of County And Campus Views Of Extension Engagement, Nancy K. Franz, Randall S. Peterson, Amber L. Dailey

Journal of Extension

Feeling pressure from stakeholders, Cornell Cooperative Extension has responded using the Kellogg Commission report on the Future of State and Land-Grant Universities as a blueprint for organizational change. Results of interviews revealed both similarities and differences in county and state staff views of engagement. The most significant difference is that county staff view their jobs as the critical link between community needs and university resources, while campus staff view them as implementers of programs. This finding suggests a need to engage all staff in a mutual dialogue of roles and expectation if change based on Extension engagement is to be …

An Investigation Of The Direct And Ripple Effect Of An Environmental Jolt On The Airline Industry, Leonard Lane May 2002

An Investigation Of The Direct And Ripple Effect Of An Environmental Jolt On The Airline Industry, Leonard Lane

Student Scholarship

The events of September 11, 2001 significantly affected the operations of the U.S. domestic airline industry. The unprecedented two and one-half day, government mandated shut-down of the airline industry was followed by individual company actions that varied from large decreases in their operational capacity to little or no change. This unstable environment provided a unique opportunity to conduct an exploratory study to address the question of how firms and their customers in the airline industry reacted to the direct and ripple effect of an external environmental jolt that affected the entire industry and what accounted for the different firm responses …

The Leadership Of The Domestic Violence Movement In Minnesota, Suzanne Koepplinger May 2002

The Leadership Of The Domestic Violence Movement In Minnesota, Suzanne Koepplinger

Theses and Graduate Projects

The beginnings of the domestic violence movement were heavily influenced by cultural feminist thought and servant leadership styles. In recent years, more hierarchical and professional service providers have gained ground and changed the face of service provision, legislative efforts and public outreach in the domestic violence movement. What began as a social change movement has evolved into an institution in its own right. This shift has caused new styles of leadership and a new paradigm to take root. Transforming, empowering and visionary leadership, all with a base in feminism, mark the current players. It has not been an easy transition, …

Workforce Diversity Programs: A Case Study Of The Las Vegas Valley Water District’S “3-Year Diversity Implementation Plan”, Wilisha C. Moore

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Diversity programs have become a popular topic in today’s workforce. Diversity has become an important factor in the success of an organization. More and more agencies are beginning to realize that the workforce is becoming more diverse, and organizations are starting to embrace this diversity. Organizations are beginning to understand that diversity adds to the production and to the success of the organization, and is not a negative setback. Many agencies are realizing that diversity includes all employees, and is no longer just a racial issue. Diversity is the makeup of the world, and there are many dimensions of it. …

Using Complexity Theory To Select Between Leaders And Managers, Michael W. Jordan May 2002

Using Complexity Theory To Select Between Leaders And Managers, Michael W. Jordan

Theses and Graduate Projects

Several authors have attempted recently to extend Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) theory to organizations and business management (Wheatley, 1992; Lind, 1994; Beccone, 1998; Zimmerman, Lindberg & Plsek, 1998, Eoyang & Olson, 2001). The theory might be useful for practitioners, but it cannot provide detailed scientific predictions. The following questions are posed for analysis: Could CAS theory be applied to hiring and promoting leaders and managers? Would it be possible, and would it make sense, for organizations to identify emergent leaders as management prospects given Beccone's analysis of the distinction between leaders and managers? How might the procedures and results likely …

Discipleship: Empowering Followers For The Modern Church, Gordon Thomas May 2002

Discipleship: Empowering Followers For The Modern Church, Gordon Thomas

Theses and Graduate Projects

The modern church finds itself under increasing pressure as the number of individuals entering the ministry continues to fall short of the number accepting vocational calls outside of ministry or retiring. Churches of all denominations are looking for creative ways to re-engage their members into accepting a broader range of responsibility in the church. The term many are using is 'discipleship'.

This study will first examine the stewardship theory developed by Peter Block - the choice of service over self-interest. This theory will then be contrasted with the work done by Pastor Michael Foss in his recent book Power Surge. …

Training Practices In School Consultation: Twenty Years Later, Terri Owens May 2002

Training Practices In School Consultation: Twenty Years Later, Terri Owens

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Consultation has long been noted in the literature as a preferred role of school psychologists (Curtis & Zins, 1980; Gutkin & Curtis, 1982). Yet, few studies have examined University training practices in the area of consultation. This study, in part, replicated a study conducted by Meyers, Wurtz, and Flanagan (1981) that examined training practices 20 years ago. Currently, Program Directors from school psychology training programs in the United States were asked to describe how their training program addressed consultation. The number of courses offered in consultation, the methods used to teach consultation, and the models of consultation taught to school …

Relevancy And Risk: The U.S. Army And Futurecombat Systems, Joseph N. Mait, Jon G. Grossman

Defense Horizons

In the post-Cold War geostrategic environment, the U.S. Army has been challenged to balance its ability to conduct a major theater war with its requirement to deploy to numerous smallscale conflicts. To realize the capabilities it needs, the Army has proposed a visionary transformation of light infantry and heavy armored forces into medium-weight forces capable of fighting the full spectrum of military conflicts. Key to this transformation is the development of the Future Combat Systems (FCS), which depends on substantial improvements in six critical technology areas: sensors, networks, robotics, survivability, lethality, and power sources.

In assessing these critical technologies, we …

Nonstate Actors In Colombia: Threat And Response, Max G. Manwaring Dr. May 2002

Nonstate Actors In Colombia: Threat And Response, Max G. Manwaring Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Colombia's deeply rooted and ambiguous warfare has reached crisis proportions in that Colombia's "Hobbesian Trinity" of illegal drug traffickers, insurgents, and paramilitary organizations are creating a situation in which life is indeed "nasty, brutish, and short." The first step in developing a macro-level vision, policy, and strategy to deal with the Colombian crisis in a global context is to be clear on what the Colombian crisis is, and what the fundamental threats implicit (and explicit) in it are. Political and military leaders can start thinking about the gravity of the terrorist strategy employed by Colombia's stateless adversaries from this point. …

The Nonprofit Sector And The New State Activism, Mark Sidel May 2002

The Nonprofit Sector And The New State Activism, Mark Sidel

Michigan Law Review

The burgeoning field of nonprofit and philanthropic law has a new and superb history in Norman Silber's pathbreaking A Corporate Form of Freedom: The Emergence of the Nonprofit Sector. In confronting "the history of efforts to control the creation and permissible purposes for nonprofit corporations by states, and ... the relocation of these efforts to the Internal Revenue Service" (p. 5), Professor Silber effectively deliniates the rich history of our ambiguous, often conflicted attempts to regulate the American nonprofit sector, and points clearly to the ways in which history influences the current complexities of state regulation. From a discredited …

Putting Socks On An Octopus: A Qualitative Understanding Of The Transformation To Customer Relationship Management, Patricia A. Sahm May 2002

Putting Socks On An Octopus: A Qualitative Understanding Of The Transformation To Customer Relationship Management, Patricia A. Sahm

Student Scholarship

The art of business underwent an upheaval in the last decade as new technologies met better-informed customers. One response to this new business environment can be seen in a recent repositioning from business models focused on products to ones based in customer centric actions. By the mid-1990s, this thinking led to the concept of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and to the explosive growth of CRM software and consulting services providers. After six to eight years of CRM implementations the results remain mixed with about 60-70% considered failures. What went wrong and how can it go right? Practitioners of CRM, whether …

Genre Studies: Temporary Homogeneous Grouping To Improve Reading Or Merely Another Form Of Tracking?, Brenda Wright Campbell Edd May 2002

Genre Studies: Temporary Homogeneous Grouping To Improve Reading Or Merely Another Form Of Tracking?, Brenda Wright Campbell Edd

Dissertations

For the last fifty years, raising the achievement levels of students thought to be “at-risk” has proven to be one of the most difficult and vexing problems facing educators. Although many different strategies have been tried with varying levels of success, no single at-risk solution has emerged that both promotes significant achievement gains and helps to narrow the achievement gap between people of color and whites. This study examined the effectiveness of a particular district-wide literacy strategy in its first year that focused on literacy to educate students identified as “at-risk”. Specifically, this study used data gathered from two measures …
