Innovatively Saving The Future Of Transportation: Small Aircraft Transportation System (Sats), Jocelyn Nickerson, Brent Bowen, Russell Smith, Scott Tarry, Massoum Moussavi

Journal of Public Transportation

The aviation industry is a rapidly changing entity of the world’s economy. Millions of travelers consistently choose aviation as their mode of transportation because it is reliable, time-efficient, and safe. However, high demand has led to delays, cancellations, and gridlock. As the need for efficient travel options increases, passengers will look for other avenues of travel. Fortuitously, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its partners are developing a unique and innovative alternative to this problem. The solution, known as the Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS), will likely change the face of general aviation (GA) as it is known …

A Workshop Assessing The Effects Of Social Support On The Incidence Of Burnout, David Brian Bates Aug 2002

A Workshop Assessing The Effects Of Social Support On The Incidence Of Burnout, David Brian Bates

Psychology

This research was designed to address the issue of burnout by developing and presenting a workshop to 26 human service providers (primarily educated Caucasian women) to increase their level of social support and address organizational concerns. Two measures were used in a pre-posttest design: the Maslach Burnout Inventory and social support questionnaire developed for this study. The results showed that burnout dropped significantly on the emotional exhaustion subscale. There was a drop in the depersonalization subscale but it only approached significance. There was also a negative correlation of perceived social support satisfaction with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization at both pre …

Legislating Citizenship In The United States: The Impact Of State Building On Woman Sufferage Legislation, 1848-1918, Eric C. Dahlin Aug 2002

Legislating Citizenship In The United States: The Impact Of State Building On Woman Sufferage Legislation, 1848-1918, Eric C. Dahlin

Theses and Dissertations

This is a state-level analysis of the impact of state building on woman suffrage legislation in the United States. This study examines all states in which state legislatures were conferred the power to submit a constitutional amendment to the electorate for approval. I use a sequential random-effects logistic regression model to estimate the effects of state building on legislative outcome. Legislative outcome is measured in three stages: whether or not a bill is introduced in either the House or the Senate during a legislative session, whether or not a bill is voted on in either the House or the Senate …

Image Assessment System And Landsat Level 1 Product Generation System Consolidation Project, Brian K. Sauer

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

The Mission Operations Center (MOC) at the Earth Resources Observation Systems (EROS) Data Center in Sioux Falls, SD manages the Landsat 7 Image Assessment System (IAS) and Level 1 Processing System (LPGS). Both systems process Level 0 non-radiometric corrected Landsat 7 data into Level 1 radiometric and geometric corrected products. Production of products from Level O to Level 1 is the primary function of the LPGS. The IAS performs image assessment and quality assurance on selected data stored in the Landsat 7 data archive. Before launch of the Landsat 7 satellite in 1999, Computer Science Corporation built the IAS and …

Impacts And Effects Of Service-Learning On High School Students, Bryan Richard Rossi Aug 2002

Impacts And Effects Of Service-Learning On High School Students, Bryan Richard Rossi

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

In the ten years this researcher has spent preparing to complete the requirements for a Ph.D. in Education Policy and Administration, he has come to see some of the transformations society and education have gone through. This has been fascinating to examine in parallel the educational transformations and human development of work and research in various schools. On the one hand, there have been the developments of the "macro-education" world through the Department of Children, Families and Learning, the state legislature, the news media, and the role of the university in education policy. On the other hand, there have been …

A Case For Implementing An Electronic Document Managament System (Edms), Scott D. Seiler Aug 2002

A Case For Implementing An Electronic Document Managament System (Edms), Scott D. Seiler

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

We live in a world where documentation and record keeping are considered not only necessary but also essential. This documentation produces and unprecedented amount of paperwork. Keeping track of this volume of paper is a task of monumental proportions. Faced with this task, I sought to sell the idea of an Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) to the senior staff of the governmental agency that employs me. Participation in the Creative Critical Thinking Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston, has afforded me the opportunity to formulate an implementation scheme to accomplish this. Included in my synthesis project are the …

Team Leadership Approaches For Corporate Project Managers, Christopher Gralton

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

The study of Critical and Creative Thinking (C&CT) methods introduced me to a number of new approaches and tools that have vital and practical applications for today’s corporate team leaders. The primary purpose of my paper and the Genuity Inc. case example, is to demonstrate how these C&CT approaches and tools can be used by corporate team leaders to motivate, direct and lead their teams. Towards this end I have organized my paper into two major sections: 1) In the first, I lay the groundwork by defining the challenges facing today’s project managers and the cross-functional teams they lead. 2) …

Examining Perceptions About Restorative Justice Among Correctional Managers And Leaders, Sigrun M. Klausen Jul 2002

Examining Perceptions About Restorative Justice Among Correctional Managers And Leaders, Sigrun M. Klausen

Theses and Graduate Projects

There has been an increasing dissatisfaction with the current criminal justice system, and restorative justice with its ancient roots, has made its way into criminal justice in the past 20 years as a different way of thinking about crime. The Minnesota Department of Corrections established a Restorative Justice unit in 1994 as the first state in the nation. To adapt restorative justice in the prison system, a change in organizational culture is required, and it is important that managers and leaders understand and accept the principles. A questionnaire with closed and open-ended questions was sent to managers and leaders in …

Required Reading For Library Administrators Part 1, Eric C. Shoaf, Tobeylynn Birch, Mark T. Day, William B. Edgar

Publications

The library and information science literature is overflowing with how-to articles, particularly how to manage the library. Increasingly, library managers find that the time they have available to peruse such literature lessens as other professional demands intrude. With this trend in mind, members of the Comparative Library Organization Committee (CLOC), a LAMA/LOMS standing committee, decided that a list of required readings is in order. Not just another bibliography, the selection of titles was developed using citation analysis, or bibliometrics, to select highly cited authors and titles for works published outside of the professional library literature, and for works published within …

Collective Myopia As The Blocking Mechanism To Organizational Learning, Mei Ling, May Wong Jun 2002

Collective Myopia As The Blocking Mechanism To Organizational Learning, Mei Ling, May Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This study aims to identify the blocking n1echanisms for Japanese expatriate managers to acquire double-loop organizational learning in their international assignments. Two Japanese multinational department stores - Morioka and Chubuya - were studied in Japan to illustrate how the Japanese expatriate managers were trapped by the collective myopia. The major blocking mechanisms identified are common Japanese practices which include parent company community spirit, dozoku inhabitants, parent company's translators, and desire for normality. The modes or frames of mind and thinking of these Japanese practices prevent the Japanese expatriates from moving up the organizational learning to achieve the corporate objective of …
