A Trusted Environment For Mpi Programs, German Florez-Larrahondo Dec 2002

A Trusted Environment For Mpi Programs, German Florez-Larrahondo

Theses and Dissertations

Several algorithms have been proposed to implement intrusion detection systems (IDS) based on the idea that anomalies in the behavior of a system might be produced by a set of actions of an intruder or by a system fault. Almost no previous research has been conducted in the area of anomaly detection for high performance clusters. The research reported in this thesis demonstrates that the analysis of sequences of function calls issued by one or more processes can be used to verify the correct execution of parallel programs written in C/C++ with the Message Passing Interface (MPI) in a cluster …

Dimensionality Reduction Of Hyperspectral Signatures For Optimized Detection Of Invasive Species, Abhinav Mathur Dec 2002

Dimensionality Reduction Of Hyperspectral Signatures For Optimized Detection Of Invasive Species, Abhinav Mathur

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the use of hyperspectral reflectance signals for the discrimination of cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica) from other subtly different vegetation species. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves are used to determine which spectral bands should be considered as candidate features. Multivariate statistical analysis is then applied to the candidate features to determine the optimum subset of spectral bands. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) is used to compute the optimum linear combination of the selected subset to be used as a feature for classification. Similarly, for comparison purposes, ROC analysis, multivariate statistical analysis, and LDA are utilized …

Scheduling For Proportional Differentiated Services On The Internet, Manimaran Selvaraj Dec 2002

Scheduling For Proportional Differentiated Services On The Internet, Manimaran Selvaraj

Theses and Dissertations

Proportional Differentiated Services can be provisioned in terms of bandwidth, delay, or packet loss. Several studies contributed schedulers and packet droppers that achieved proportional bandwidth, delay, or loss differentiation. However, all these schemes differentiated in terms of only one of the three metrics. A simple, unified, scalable, and robust scheme to simultaneously control all three metrics was felt important. By controlling just delay and packet loss, proportional differentiation can be achieved in terms of all three metrics. A robust adaptive scheduler for proportional delay differentiation services is presented. Proportional services are further policed by a class based packet dropper. The …

Self-Smoothing Functional Estimation, Bronson Thomas Yake Dec 2002

Self-Smoothing Functional Estimation, Bronson Thomas Yake

Theses and Dissertations

Analysis of measured data is often required when there is no deep understanding of the mathematics that accurately describes the process being measured. Additionally, realistic estimation of the derivative of measured data is often useful. Current techniques of accomplishing this type of data analysis are labor intensive, prone to significant error, and highly dependent on the expertise of the engineer performing the analysis. The ?Self-Smoothing Functional Estimation? (SSFE) algorithm was developed to automate the analysis of measured data and to provide a reliable basis for the extraction of derivative information. In addition to the mathematical development of the SSFE algorithm, …

Small Signal Stability Of An Unregulated Power System, Vikas Singhvi Dec 2002

Small Signal Stability Of An Unregulated Power System, Vikas Singhvi

Theses and Dissertations

Rotor angle stability is the ability of the interconnected synchronous machines of a power system to remain in synchronism. This stability problem is concerned with the behavior of one or more synchronous machine after they have been perturbed. These perturbations can be small or large depending upon the type of disturbances considered. The work presented in this thesis is focused on the power system behavior when subjected to small disturbances. The ?small signal? disturbances are considered sufficiently small for the linearization of system equations to be permissible for the purpose of the analysis. The first step in the small signal …

Linear Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Signals Via Wavelet Feature Extraction, Jiang Li Dec 2002

Linear Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Signals Via Wavelet Feature Extraction, Jiang Li

Theses and Dissertations

A pixel in remotely sensed hyperspectral imagery is typically a mixture of multiple electromagnetic radiances from various ground cover materials. Spectral unmixing is a quantitative analysis procedure used to recognize constituent ground cover materials (or endmembers) and obtain their mixing proportions (or abundances) from a mixed pixel. The abundances are typically estimated using the least squares estimation (LSE) method based on the linear mixture model (LMM). This dissertation provides a complete investigation on how the use of appropriate features can improve the LSE of endmember abundances using remotely sensed hyperspectral signals. The dissertation shows how features based on signal classification …

Development Of Application Program For Harmonic Analysis, Sunitha Uppalapati Dec 2002

Development Of Application Program For Harmonic Analysis, Sunitha Uppalapati

Theses and Dissertations

Increased power quality problems due to intensive usage of power electronic devices resulted in development of software applications to perform quick harmonic analysis. However, the present harmonic analysis applications have special software or computer locks requirements and occupy huge memory and cost high. An application program (using Microsoft Visual C++) that is simple yet accurate in calculations; with no special software or high memory requirements is developed in this thesis work. The program uses the automatic acceptance criteria (AAC) and the harmonic penetration techniques in calculating the system voltages. Several userriendly features and tools that aid in better understanding of …

Condensation Heat Transfer In Horizontal Micro-Fin Tubes, Chea-Chun Kung Dec 2002

Condensation Heat Transfer In Horizontal Micro-Fin Tubes, Chea-Chun Kung

Theses and Dissertations

Three existing condensation heat transfer models are validated using 544 experimental data points for pure refrigerants and refrigerant mixtures. The Cavallini et al. (1999) model predicts well with the pure-refrigerant data sets. However, the Cavallini et al. (1999) model fails to predict the refrigerant-mixture data sets. The Yu and Koyama (1998) model, which is applicable for the pure refrigerants only, fails to predict most of the R22 data sets. The Kedzierski and Goncalves (1999) model, which is applicable for both pure refrigerants and refrigerant mixtures, yields relatively high mean absolute deviations for most of the pure-refrigerant data sets. The Kedzierski …

An Analysis For Evaluating The Cost/Profit Effectiveness Of Parallel Systems, Maria Teran Dec 2002

An Analysis For Evaluating The Cost/Profit Effectiveness Of Parallel Systems, Maria Teran

Theses and Dissertations

A new domain of commercial applications demands the development of inexpensive parallel computing platforms to lower the cost of operations and increase the business profit. The calculation of returns on an IT investment is now important to justify the decision of upgrading or replacing parallel systems. This thesis presents a framework of the performance and economic factors that are considered when evaluating a parallel system. We introduce a metric called the cost/profit effective metric, which measures the effectiveness of a parallel system in terms of performance, cost and profit. This metric describes the profit obtained from the performance of three …

Modeling Of Evaporation And Condensation Pressure-Drop In Micro-Fin Tubes, Meng-Onn Tan Dec 2002

Modeling Of Evaporation And Condensation Pressure-Drop In Micro-Fin Tubes, Meng-Onn Tan

Theses and Dissertations

Three existing pressure-drop models are validated and analyzed with experimental data compiled from the research database. From the analysis, it was found that the pressure-drop prediction results from the models are not very accurate and not consistent with all experimental datasets. A new pressure-drop model was consequently created based on the findings from the study, and experimental data from the database were used to validate the model to produce more accurate and consistent predictions. The new pressure-drop model was tested on experimental datasets that were in the database and also with experimental datasets that were not in the database. Good …

A Framework For Automatic Ontology Generation From Autonomous Web Applications, Giovanni Modica Dec 2002

A Framework For Automatic Ontology Generation From Autonomous Web Applications, Giovanni Modica

Theses and Dissertations

Ontologies capture the structure, relationships, semantics and other essential meta information of an application. This thesis describes a framework to automate application interoperability by using dynamically generated ontologies. We propose a set of techniques to extract ontologies from data accessible on the Web in the form of semi-structured HTML pages. Ontologies retrieved from similar applications are matched together to create a general ontology describing the application domain. Information retrieval and graph matching techniques are used to match and measure the usefulness of the ontologies created. Matching algorithms are combined together to produce global ontologies based on local ontologies inherently present …

The Case That Won't Go Away: Beseiged Institutions And The Massachusetts Teacher Tests, Larry H. Ludlow, Dennis Shirley, Camelia Rosca Dec 2002

The Case That Won't Go Away: Beseiged Institutions And The Massachusetts Teacher Tests, Larry H. Ludlow, Dennis Shirley, Camelia Rosca

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Teacher testing was inaugurated in Massachusetts in 1998 and a 59% failure rate among test-takers led to public shaming of the teacher candidates and their colleges and universities in the media. Within a two-year time period, low-performing teacher education programs in Massachusetts initiated a wide range of test preparatory activities which led to a dramatic increase in their students' pass rates. The authors separate colleges and universities into three categories and examine their differentiated responses to teacher testing. Their finding that institutions of higher education have responded effectively to teacher testing does not preclude critique of teacher testing as currently …

The Morphology Of Nine Radio-Selected Faint Galaxies From Deep Hubble Space Telescope Imaging, Nathan D. Roche, James D. Lowenthal, David C. Koo Dec 2002

The Morphology Of Nine Radio-Selected Faint Galaxies From Deep Hubble Space Telescope Imaging, Nathan D. Roche, James D. Lowenthal, David C. Koo

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC2 we perform deep I-band imaging of nine radio-selected [F(8.5 GHz) ≥ 14 μJy] faint galaxies from the Roche, Lowenthal & Koo (2002) sample. Two are also observed in V using HST STIS. Six of the galaxies have known redshifts, in the range 0.4 < z < 1.0. Radial intensity profiles indicate that seven are disc galaxies and two are bulge-dominated. Four of the six with redshifts have a high optical surface brightness in comparison with previous studies of disc galaxies at similar redshifts (e.g. Lilly et al. 1998). The HST imaging reveals that two of the nine galaxies are in close interacting pairs and another five show morphological evidence of recent interactions - two are very asymmetric (A ∼ 0.4) and three have large, luminous rings resembling the collisional starburst rings in the Cartwheel galaxy. For the two ring galaxies with redshifts, we measure ring radii of 7.05 and 10.0 h kpc, which suggest post-collision ages 0.1-0.2 Gyr. One has a fainter inner ring, like the original Cartwheel. The remaining two appear to be late-type barred galaxies and relatively undisturbed. Our HST imaging confirms the high incidence of interactions and dynamical disturbance in faint radio-selected galaxies, as reported by Windhorst et al. and Serjeant et al., for example. In the great majority of these galaxies the high radio luminosities are probably the result of interaction-triggered starbursts. However, one interacting galaxy is a very radio-luminous giant elliptical, with red V - I colours, a normal surface brightness and no evidence of star-forming regions, so its radio source is probably an obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN). The mixture of observed morphologies suggests that enhanced radio luminosities often persist to a late stage of interaction, i.e. at least ∼0.2 Gyr after the perigalactic encounter. asym 50 -1

Blackbirds And Corn In Ohio, Richard A. Dolbeer Dec 2002

Blackbirds And Corn In Ohio, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Damage to corn by blackbirds (Icteridae) has been an economic problem throughout historical times in North America. Ohio, with the highest nesting season population density of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) in North America and large acreages of corn, has been a key State in this conflict. Surveys of damage from 1968 to 1979 revealed that blackbirds annually destroyed less than 1% of the corn crops in Ohio, a 4- to 6-million dollar loss at 1979 prices. This total dollar loss is somewhat misleading because of the uneven distribution of damage among fields. Over 97% of the cornfields in Ohio receive …

Evaluation Of Lasers To Disperse American Crows, Corvus Brachyrhynchos, From Urban Night Roosts, W.P. Gorenzel, B. F. Blackwell, G.D. Simmons, T.P. Salmon, R.A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

American crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) have a long history of causing agricultural damage in North America. Shooting and bombing at crow night roosts have been employed to reduce such damage. Most roosts were located in rural locations, but in the latter half of the 1900s crows began to roost in urban locations. Urban crow roosts are presently a nationwide problem in the United States. Thousands of crows at a roost create problems for businesses and residents. Improved control techniques are needed. Lasers have been used in Europe to scare and disperse birds but the technique has only recently received formal testing. …

A Simulation Study Of Space-Based Observations Of Gravity Waves In The Airglow Using Observed Aloha-93 Wave Parameters, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., J. S. Brown Dec 2002

A Simulation Study Of Space-Based Observations Of Gravity Waves In The Airglow Using Observed Aloha-93 Wave Parameters, Michael P. Hickey Ph.D., J. S. Brown

Publications

We use gravity wave parameters derived from the ALOHA-93 campaign to model four gravity waves in airglow emissions as observed from the ground to numerically predict whether these waves could have been observed from space. In spite of encountering critical levels, some waves may still be observed in the airglow provided the critical level lies within the airglow emission region. One of the four waves experiences a critical level in the lower region of an airglow layer such that the disturbance to the volume emission rate would be effectively limited to a short distance along a satellite line of sight. …
