An Evening With Cub Fans In Scotland: The Craigs Of Rockford, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2002

An Evening With Cub Fans In Scotland: The Craigs Of Rockford, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Cub fans are a unique species. Attachment to losing is taken to a level of religious fanaticism by the Cub faithful. Of course the charm of the Cubs is not simply that they lose, but that they are lovable losers. This is what inspires undying devotion in their fans. Indeed if the Cubs were to do the improbable, nay the impossible, and win a World Series I suspect Cub fans would lose the essence of their Cubness.

Mobicast: Just-In-Time Multicast For Sensor Networks Under Spatiotemporal Constraints, Qingfeng Huang, Chenyang Lu, Gruia-Catalin Roman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

This paper is concerned with coordinated delivery of messages in sensor networks. The notion of multicast is re-examined in light of a new set of requirements that are specific to such networks. The result of this investigation is a new concept called mobicast. Mobicast entails the delivery of messages to large sets of nodes in a manner that satisfies a potentially dynamic set of spatiotemporal constraints. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of mobicast, we present a novel topology-aware protocol for sensor networks. Worst-case analysis shows that the protocol provides strong spatial and temporal delivery guarantees under a set of …

The Effects Of Extended School Year On Students With Mild Disabilities And Its Relationship To Regression Rate, Whitney C. Sears Dec 2002

The Effects Of Extended School Year On Students With Mild Disabilities And Its Relationship To Regression Rate, Whitney C. Sears

Theses & Honors Papers

This study is an historical study comparing the spring and fall test scores of students who attended summer academic program of one particular private school for students with learning differences, including autism, Asperger's Syndrome, dyslexia, attention deficit disorder, and nonverbal learning disabilities. This study concluded that there was a statistical significance between the regression rates in both reading vocabulary and reading comprehension among those who attended the summer program and those who did not attend the summer program. Those students who did not attend the summer program regressed in skills significantly. Those students who attended the summer program maintained or …

Isotropization In Brane Gas Cosmology, Scott Watson, Robert H. Brandenberger Dec 2002

Isotropization In Brane Gas Cosmology, Scott Watson, Robert H. Brandenberger

Physics - All Scholarship

Brane Gas Cosmology (BGC) is an approach to unifying string theory and cosmology in which matter is described by a gas of strings and branes in a dilaton gravity background. The Universe is assumed to start out with all spatial dimensions compact and small. It has previously been shown that in this context, in the approximation of neglecting inhomogeneities and anisotropies, there is a dynamical mechanism which allows only three spatial dimensions to become large. However, previous studies do not lead to any conclusions concerning the isotropy or anisotropy of these three large spatial dimensions. Here, we generalize the equations …

Methods And Ethics In A Life History Study Of Teacher Thinking, James A. Muchmore Dec 2002

Methods And Ethics In A Life History Study Of Teacher Thinking, James A. Muchmore

The Qualitative Report

During the past decade, there has been an increasing interest in the use of life history and narrative approaches to study teacher thinking and teacher development. Unlike other forms of educational research, in which relationships between researchers and participants are characterized by business-like transactions that rarely extend into the realm of the personal, life history and narrative research can involve relationships that are personal and complex. Such research can also generate massive amounts of data--in the form of field notes, interview transcripts, and other documents--which are very difficult to synthesize. This article presents some of the methodological and ethical issues …

Recurrent Events Analysis In The Presence Of Time Dependent Covariates And Dependent Censoring, Maja Miloslavsky, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Steve Butler Dec 2002

Recurrent Events Analysis In The Presence Of Time Dependent Covariates And Dependent Censoring, Maja Miloslavsky, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Steve Butler

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Recurrent events models have lately received a lot of attention in the literature. The majority of approaches discussed show the consistency of parameter estimates under the assumption that censoring is independent of the recurrent events process of interest conditional on the covariates included into the model. We provide an overview of available recurrent events analysis methods, and present an inverse probability of censoring weighted estimator for the regression parameters in the Andersen-Gill model that is commonly used for recurrent event analysis. This estimator remains consistent under informative censoring if the censoring mechanism is estimated consistently, and generally improves on the …

Failing Georgia: The Case Against The Ban On Social Promotion, Donald R. Livingston, Sharon M. Livingston Dec 2002

Failing Georgia: The Case Against The Ban On Social Promotion, Donald R. Livingston, Sharon M. Livingston

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Our analysis begins with an examination of the state of Georgia's rationale for the decision regarding social promotion that was based on the perceived views that teachers have on the issue. Research suggests, however, that teachers hold contradictory opinions concerning the use of standardized tests for high stakes decisions, such as promotion, and are not aware of the consequences most children suffer when they fail a grade. ...

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Polydisperse samples of Au nanoparticles protected with monolayers of hexanethiolate ligands (C6 MPCs) and with mixed monolayers of hexanethiolate and mercaptounde- canoic acid (C6/MUA MPCs) have been chromatographically separated using C8 120-Å columns and acetone/toluene mobile phase. The spectral details of eluted peaks and of quantized double-layer charging features in the differential pulse voltammetry of collected fractions were used to show that the elution orders of C6 MPC mixtures and of C6/MUA MPC mixtures were different. For C6 MPCs, the smallest MPCs were eluted first, whereas the smallest C6/MUA MPCs were eluted last. The reversal of order of elution was …

Novel General Expressions That Describe The Behavior Of The Height Equivalent Of A Theoretical Plate In Chromatographic Systems Involving Electrically-Driven And Pressure-Driven Flows, B. A. Grimes, S. Lüdtke, K. K. Unger, Athanasios I. Liapis Dec 2002

Liapis

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Novel general expressions are constructed and presented that describe the behavior of the height equivalent of a theoretical plate (plate height), H, as a function of the linear velocity, Vx, along the axis, x, of the column and the kinetic parameters that characterize the mass transfer and adsorption mechanisms in chromatographic columns. Open tube capillaries as well as columns packed with either non-porous or porous particles are studied. The porous particles could have unimodal or bimodal pore-size distributions and intraparticle convective fluid flow and pore diffusion are considered. The expressions for the plate height, H, presented in this work could …

Extensions Of Quandles And Cocycle Knot Invariants, Marina Appiou Nikiforou Dec 2002

Extensions Of Quandles And Cocycle Knot Invariants, Marina Appiou Nikiforou

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Knot theory has rapidly expanded in recent years. New representations of braid groups led to an extremely powerful polynomial invariant, the Jones polynomial. Combinatorics applied to knot and link diagrams led to generalizations. Knot theory also has connections with other fields such as statistical mechanics and quantum field theory, and has applications in determining how certain enzymes act on DNA molecules, for example.

The principal objective of this dissertation is to study the relations between knots and algebraic structures called quandles. A quandle is a set with a binary operation satisfying some properties related to the three Reidemeister moves. The …

Construction Of Counterfactuals And The G-Computation Formula, Zhuo Yu, Mark J. Van Der Laan Dec 2002

Construction Of Counterfactuals And The G-Computation Formula, Zhuo Yu, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Robins' causal inference theory assumes existence of treatment specific counterfactual variables so that the observed data augmented by the counterfactual data will satisfy a consistency and a randomization assumption. Gill and Robins [2001] show that the consistency and randomization assumptions do not add any restrictions to the observed data distribution. In particular, they provide a construction of counterfactuals as a function of the observed data distribution. In this paper we provide a construction of counterfactuals as a function of the observed data itself. Our construction provides a new statistical tool for estimation of counterfactual distributions. Robins [1987b] shows that the …
