Energy‐Constrained Open‐System Magmatic Processes 3. Energy‐Constrained Recharge, Assimilation, And Fractional Crystallization (Ec‐Rafc), Frank J. Spera, Wendy A. Bohrson Dec 2002

Energy‐Constrained Open‐System Magmatic Processes 3. Energy‐Constrained Recharge, Assimilation, And Fractional Crystallization (Ec‐Rafc), Frank J. Spera, Wendy A. Bohrson

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Geochemical data for igneous rock suites provide conclusive evidence for the occurrence of open‐system processes within thermally and compositionally evolving magma bodies. The most significant processes include magma Recharge (with possible enclave formation and magma mixing), Assimilation of anatectic melt derived from wallrock partial melting and formation of cumulates by Fractional Crystallization (RAFC). In this study, we extend the Energetically Constrained Assimilation and Fractional Crystallization (EC‐AFC) model [Spera and Bohrson, 2001; Bohrson and Spera, 2001] to include the addition of compositionally and thermally distinct recharge melt during simultaneous assimilation and fractional crystallization. Energy‐Constrained Recharge, Assimilation, and Fractional …

Comparison Of Snowshoe Hare Populations In Interior Alaska, Bjorn Flora Dec 2002

Comparison Of Snowshoe Hare Populations In Interior Alaska, Bjorn Flora

Biological Sciences

Snowshoe hares, Lepus americanus, are a 'keystone' prey species in northern boreal forests and experience population fluctuations of 8-11-years. Despite intense responses of both vegetation and predators to changes in hare densities, landscape-scale comparisons of hare populations in Alaska have been limited to qualitative descriptions. We conducted capture-recapture studies of snowshoe hares at 5 locales in the Tanana valley, from Tok in the east to Clear in the west from 1999 to 2002. Snowshoe hare densities were highest in 1999 (x=6.36 ha⁻¹, SE=0.63) and declined thereafter. We were unable to detect declines in apparent survival during declining densities in our …

The Ecological Genetics Of Gynodioecy In Silene Acaulis L. (Caryophyllaceae): Spatial Sex Structure And Inbreeding Depression, Stephen Robert Keller Dec 2002

The Ecological Genetics Of Gynodioecy In Silene Acaulis L. (Caryophyllaceae): Spatial Sex Structure And Inbreeding Depression, Stephen Robert Keller

Biological Sciences

Gynodioecy, the co-occurrence of females and hermaphrodites, is considered an intermediate step in the evolution of separate sexes in flowering plants. Highly variable female frequencies among populations suggest structuring of sex determining genes and differences in the relative fitness of females and hermaphrodites as seed parents. I investigated spatial variability in sex ratio and the effects of inbreeding on offspring quality in Silene acaulis. Female frequencies varied among populations from 0.32 to 0.69, and most were at temporal equilibrium. Females were significantly clumped within two of six populations. Females produced from 4 to 27 times as many fruits as hermaphrodites. …

Development Of High Spectral Resolution Iron Boltzmann Lidar, Tao Hou Dec 2002

Development Of High Spectral Resolution Iron Boltzmann Lidar, Tao Hou

Engineering

An initial iron (Fe) Boltzmann lidar was developed in winter 2000-2001 at Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR). This resonance lidar system supported Fe concentration measurements. An initial Fe Boltzmann temperature measurement was made in December 2000. This initial system was fundamentally limited by the 1 pm tuning resolution of the laser. During the winter of 2001-2002, a control system was developed to increase the resolution of the laser tuning to 0.09 pm. Fe cooncentration and Fe Boltzmann temperature measurements were made and an experimental analysis of the measurements was developed. This thesis presents lidar observations of the mesospheric Fe layer …

Ice, Bedload Transport, And Channel Morphology On The Upper Kuparuk River, Jeffrey Albert Oatley Dec 2002

Ice, Bedload Transport, And Channel Morphology On The Upper Kuparuk River, Jeffrey Albert Oatley

Engineering

The objective of this study was to quantify the impact of bottom ice on sedimentation processes at a study site on the Upper Kuparuk River, in Northern Alaska. The approach taken was to use the Meyer-Peter and Mueller (1948) and Parker (1990) equations to determine bedload rating curves at four cross sections within the study reach, and to apply these rating curves to the ten year flow history of the study site to determine the total potential bedload transport that was suppressed during snowmelt runoff. In conjunction with this analysis, a tracer rock study was performed at the study site. …

Stratigraphy, Major Oxide Geochemistry, And ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar Geochronology Of A Tephra Section Near Tok, Alaska, Janet Schaefer

Geosciences

Stratigraphy, major oxide geochemistry, and ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar geochronology are used to describe a tephra section near Tok, Alaska, north ofthe Wrangell volcanic field. This tephra section contains seven type II tephras and two type I tephras. Hornblende in a tephra near the base of the section was dated at 627.5 +/- 47.7 ka using the ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar method of single-step total laser fusion. This hornblende-rich tephra is here named the Tetlin Tephra. The age and composition of the Tetlin Tephra indicates that it is likely the product of an explosive phase of activity of Mount Drum volcano, where petrologically similar domes were …

Attenuation Of The Lg Phase In Interior Alaska, Duncan A. Marriott Dec 2002

Attenuation Of The Lg Phase In Interior Alaska, Duncan A. Marriott

Geosciences

A simultaneous inversion of a large dataset produced robust estimates of regional attenuation for the Lg phase in interior Alaska. Data were collected from summer 1999 through summer 2001 from the Broadband Experiment Across the Alaska Range (BEAAR). Spectra calculated from this dataset were used in a nonlinear simultaneous least squares inversion to determine source factors, path effects and site amplification terms. The average regional attenuation of the Lg phase in interior Alaska was found to be: LgQ(f)=166f⁰·⁵⁸ Variation in regional attenuation has two main characteristics: variation on small spatial scales caused by small crustal heterogeneities, and increased excitation of …

From March to May 2001, aerosol size distributions and chemical compositions were measured using differential mobility analyzers (DMA), an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS), Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposit Impactors (MOUDI), and denuder samplers onboard the Twin Otter aircraft as part of the Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE)-Asia campaign. Of the 19 research flights, measurements on four flights that represented different aerosol characteristics are analyzed in detail. Clear-column radiative closure is studied by comparing aerosol extinctions predicted using in situ aerosol size distribution and chemical composition measurements to those derived from the 14-wavelength NASA Ames Airborne Tracking Sun photometer (AATS-14). In the boundary layer, …

Controlling Laser High-Order Harmonic Generation Using Weak Counter-Propagating Light, Sergei Leonidovich Voronov Dec 2002

Controlling Laser High-Order Harmonic Generation Using Weak Counter-Propagating Light, Sergei Leonidovich Voronov

Theses and Dissertations

Laser high-order harmonic generation in the presence of relatively weak interfering light is investigated. The interfering pulses intersect the primary harmonic-generating laser pulse at the laser focus. The interfering light creates a standing intensity and phase modulation on the field, which disrupts microscopic phase matching and shuts down local high harmonic production. Suppression of the 23rd harmonic (by two orders of magnitude) is observed when a counter-propagating interfering pulse of light is introduced. A sequence of counter-propagating pulses can be used to shut down harmonic production in out-of-phase zones of the generating volume to achieve quasi phase matching. Harmonic emission …

Lake-Catchment Interactions With Climate In The Low Arctic Of Southern West Greenland, N. John Anderson, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Christopher E. Gibson, Bent Hasholt, Melanie J. Leng Dec 2002

Lake-Catchment Interactions With Climate In The Low Arctic Of Southern West Greenland, N. John Anderson, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Christopher E. Gibson, Bent Hasholt, Melanie J. Leng

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Arctic hydrology plays a central role in the earth’s heat balance and ocean circulation (Vörösmarty et al. 2001). Future changes associated with human influence on the climate system are also predicted to cause major changes in the energy and hydrologic mass balance of Arctic catchments. Climate change will likely affect permafrost and snowmelt, which dominate Arctic hydrology and control the chemistry of surface runoff (and hence streams and lakes) as water percolates through the active layer. However, the controls and dynamic impact of snowmelt are poorly understood, because this critical timeframe is often missed by sampling programs. In the Søndre …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Magnetization measurements have been carried out on the Er2Mn3Si5 compound (tetragonal Sc2Fe3Si5-type, space group P4/mnc) in the temperature range 1.8-300 K. There is a crossover from a room temperature paramagnetic phase to a ferromagnetic phase at 75 K (TC1). A second magnetic transition is observed at 11.5 K (TC2). The magnetic susceptibility in the paramagnetic region, above 100 K, follows simple Curie-Weiss type behavior. The magnetization does not saturate at 2 K even in applied fields of 7 T. Neutron diffraction data collected at 300 …

Monitoring Of Sandstorms With Rocsat-1 Oci Data, Shih-Jen Huang, Gin-Rong Liu, Tsung-Hua Kuo, Tang-Huang Lin, Chih-Kang Liang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The Ocean Color Imager (OCI) onboard the ROCSAT-1 Satellite was employed to demonstrate its capability in monitoring sandstorm events around Mongolia and northwestern China where they have been occurring in great frequency over these past few years. The OCI measures the radiance from the visible to near infrared regions in six spectral channels. The radiance can be used to calculate the aerosol optical depth (AOD) of the atmosphere through an atmospheric correction algorithm. The variation in the AOD during January and February of 2001 is investigated in this study. A set of OCI images covering the Yellow Sea was selected …

Experimental Nonlinear Modeling Of A Rotating Machine With An Oil Film Bearing, Chiou-Fong Chung, Pi-Cheng Tung, Chiang-Nan Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study the system identification method is applied to obtain a nonlinear equation for an oil film rotating system. The centrifugal force induced by an unbalanced mass is used as the input signal for identification, and the phase between the input signal and the measured output vibration amplitude is calculated to perform the identification. Stability analysis and system performance are evaluated by using the root locus and the Floquet-Liapunov theorem. Based on the model, the oil whirl of the journal bearing can be predicted. A comparison between the simulation results and some experimented data shows the feasibility of the …

Application Of The Force Control On The Working Path Tacking, Sun-Run Wang, Zhi-Zhong Qiao, Pi-Cheng Tung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

For the application of tracking the path on workpieces, the CCD (Charge Couple Device) identificating system is generally used as one of the popular resolutions. However, the implementation of CCD identificating system is complex and environmental-limited. This study presents a compliant motion controller by using the end-effector installed with a force sensor. This results the smoothly path tracking on a workpiece. By applying the algorithm of Fuzzy into this compliant motion, the compliant control is improved and the path on the workpiece is found more quickly and accurately. A radius compensating method is used to correct the measured data. The …

Mathematical Modeling And Prediction Method Of Concrete Carbonation And Its Applications, Ming Te Liang, Wenjun Qu, Chih-Hsin Liang Dec 2002

Mathematical Modeling And Prediction Method Of Concrete Carbonation And Its Applications, Ming Te Liang, Wenjun Qu, Chih-Hsin Liang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The carbonation process of concrete is principally a diffusion phenomenon. The penetration rate of carbon dioxide depends mainly on the concrete quality and the exposure condition. Based on both Fick’s first and second laws of linear diffusion equations, the threedimensional equation of conservation of mass is expressed. This equation can be reduced to two- and one- dimensional equations of conservation of mass which can predict the carbonation depth beneath corners and the general surface of concrete structures, respectively. The objectives of this investigation are to measure the depth of carbonation from the free surface of a concrete member and to …

On The Permeability Inside The Granular Media, Chen-Yuan Chen, Chung-Pan Lee, Cheng-Wu Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The permeability and resistance characteristics in porous structures with different grain size and shape have been studied experimentally in the paper. Two materials used in the study are crushed gravels and spherical glass balls with four sizes of 5.2 mm, 7. 4 mm, 12.2 mm, and 31.7 mm for gravels and 13.0 mm, 16.0 mm, 25. 0 mm, and 35.0 mm for balls, respectively. The permeability determined from linear Darcy Law shows a strong dependence on flow velocity in addition to grain sizes and shapes. This is not consistent to the traditional definition of permeability that is only a function …

Seasonal Biogeochemistry And Mineral Cycling Of The Middle Rio Grande Alluvial Aquifer, New Mexico, David Stewart Vinson Dec 2002

Seasonal Biogeochemistry And Mineral Cycling Of The Middle Rio Grande Alluvial Aquifer, New Mexico, David Stewart Vinson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Rio Grande in central New Mexico flows through a semi-arid, historically aggrading Quaternary rift basin. Flow regulation measures include dams, irrigation diversions, levees, and bank stabilization. These have caused severe impairment including incision, lowered water tables, and less overbank flooding; disrupted groundwater - surface water interactions; altered seasonal organic carbon dynamics; and declining native biota. Previously dynamic flowpaths in the shallow alluvial aquifer (hyporheic corridor) have become are less reversible due to parallel drain ditches with lower beds than the river. These ditches impose relatively static hydraulic gradients on the alluvial aquifer that force water to flow from the …

Depth-Varying Constitutive Properties Observed In An Isothermal Glacier, H. P. Marshall, Joel T. Harper, W. Tad Pfeffer, Neil Humphrey Dec 2002

Depth-Varying Constitutive Properties Observed In An Isothermal Glacier, H. P. Marshall, Joel T. Harper, W. Tad Pfeffer, Neil Humphrey

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Detailed three-dimensional in-situ measurements of deformation at depth are used to examine the rheology of a 6 x 106 m3 block of temperate glacier ice. Assuming that the viscosity of this ice is primarily dependent on stress, the relationship between inferred stress and measurements of strain-rate above about 115 m depth suggest a constitutive relationship with a stress exponent n about 1. Deformation below 115 m is described by a non-linear flow law with a power exponent of approximately 3-4. A sharp transition between the two flow regimes is likely caused by a change in the dominant mechanism …
