Existence Of Solutions For Discontinuous Functional Equations And Elliptic Boundary-Value Problems, Siegfried Carl, Seppo V. Heikkilä Jan 2002

Existence Of Solutions For Discontinuous Functional Equations And Elliptic Boundary-Value Problems, Siegfried Carl, Seppo V. Heikkilä

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

We prove existence results for discontinuous functional equations in general Lp-spaces and apply these results to the solvability of implicit and explicit elliptic boundary-value problems involving discontinuous nonlinearities. The main tool in the proof is a fixed point result in lattice-ordered Banach spaces proved by the second author. © 2002 Southwest Texas State University.

Stability Analysis Of Nonlinear Lyapunov Systems Associated With An Nth Order System Of Matrix Differential Equations, Kanuri N. Murty, Michael D. Shaw

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper introduces the notion of Lipschitz stability for nonlinear nth order matrix Lyapunov differential systems and gives sufficient conditions for Lipschitz stability. We develop variation of parameters formula for the solution of the nonhomogeneous nonlinear nth order matrix Lyapunov differential system. We study observability and controllability of a special system of nth order nonlinear Lyapunov systems.

On The Existence Of Solutions To A Fourth-Order Quasilinear Resonant Problem, Shibo Liu, Marco Squassina

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

By means of Morse theory we prove the existence of a nontrivial solution to a superlinear p-harmonic elliptic problem with Navier boundary conditions having a linking structure around the origin. Moreover, in case of both resonance near zero and nonresonance at +∞ the existence of two nontrivial solutions is shown. Copyright © 2002 Hindawi Publishing Corporation.

Improved Energy Model For Membrane Electroporation In Biological Cells Subjected To Electrical Pulses, R. P. Joshi, Q. Hu, K. H. Schoenbach, H. P. Hjalmarson Jan 2002

Improved Energy Model For Membrane Electroporation In Biological Cells Subjected To Electrical Pulses, R. P. Joshi, Q. Hu, K. H. Schoenbach, H. P. Hjalmarson

Bioelectrics Publications

A self-consistent model analysis of electroporation in biological cells has been carried out based on an improved energy model. The simple energy model used in the literature is somewhat incorrect and unphysical for a variety of reasons. Our model for the pore formation energy E(r) includes a dependence on pore population and density. It also allows for variable surface tension, incorporates the effects of finite conductivity on the electrostatic correction term, and is dynamic in nature. Self-consistent calculations, based on a coupled scheme involving the Smoluchowski equation and the improved energy model, are presented. It is shown that E(r) becomes …

Collisional And Radiative Processes In High-Pressure Discharge Plasmas, Kurt H. Becker, Peter F. Kurunczi, Karl H. Schoenbach Jan 2002

Collisional And Radiative Processes In High-Pressure Discharge Plasmas, Kurt H. Becker, Peter F. Kurunczi, Karl H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

Discharge plasmas at high pressures (up to and exceeding atmospheric pressure), where single collision conditions no longer prevail, provide a fertile environment for the experimental study of collisions and radiative processes dominated by (i) step-wise processes, i.e., the excitation of an already excited atomic/molecular state and by (ii) three-body collisions leading, for instance, to the formation of excimers. The dominance of collisional and radiative processes beyond binary collisions involving ground-state atoms and molecules in such environments allows for many interesting applications of high-pressure plasmas such as high power lasers, opening switches, novel plasma processing applications and sputtering, absorbers and reflectors …

Electrical Network-Based Time-Dependent Model Of Electrical Breakdown In Water, R. P. Joshi, J. Qian, K. H. Schoenbach Jan 2002

Electrical Network-Based Time-Dependent Model Of Electrical Breakdown In Water, R. P. Joshi, J. Qian, K. H. Schoenbach

Bioelectrics Publications

A time-dependent, two-dimensional, percolative approach to model dielectric breakdown based on a network of parallel resistor–capacitor elements having random values, has been developed. The breakdown criteria rely on a threshold electric field and on energy dissipation exceeding the heat of vaporization. By carrying out this time-dependent analysis, the development and propagation of streamers and prebreakdown dynamical evolution have been obtained directly. These model simulations also provide the streamer shape, characteristics such as streamer velocity, the prebreakdown delay time, time-dependent current, and relationship between breakdown times, and applied electric fields for a given geometry. The results agree well with experimental data …

2002 Aahe Assessment Conference Talk, Kenton Machina

Faculty Publications - Philosophy

In this presentation, I argue that even though statements of educational program objectives are normally politically-charged and necessarily grandiose and vague, they can be used as a basis for assessing the program's implementation, on the condition that they were taken seriously when the implementation occurred. In this situation, I argue for an assessment strategy that I term "Interactive Spiraling Assessment Process" to be employed by those in charge of evaluating the program and its objectives.

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Ph, R. Stephen Fisher Jan 2002

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Ph, R. Stephen Fisher

Information Circular--KGS

The parameter pH (the negative base-10 logarithm of hydrogen ion activity, measured in moles per liter) indicates whether a substance will behave as an acid or base. It is one of the most important parameters that describe groundwater quality, because pH largely controls the amount and chemical form of many organic and inorganic solutes in groundwater.

Mathematics For Non-Science Majors Chemistry Course, D. D. Shillady

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

A chemistry course developed for non-science majors has been taught at Virginia Commonwealth University for the past five years. CHEM 112 uses current event articles from science magazines to make use of a verbal channel of learning in non-science majors, but some mathematics is necessary. Examples are given of successful presentation of nuclear chemistry and data needed for a balanced discussion of global warming. Manipulation of symbols in balancing chemical and nuclear reactions, simple algebra, and logarithms for pH and unit analysis of simple stoichiometric conversions are fundamental to basic chemistry. The population of a voting democracy could benefit from …
