The Use Of Dramatic Demonstrations To Enhance The Motivation And Learning Of Chemistry Students, H. A. Rowe Jan 2002

The Use Of Dramatic Demonstrations To Enhance The Motivation And Learning Of Chemistry Students, H. A. Rowe

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

As part of the Virginia Collaborative for Excellence in the Preparation of Teachers (VCEPT) project, a series of demonstrations was incorporated into Chemistry 100: Man and Environment, a science course taken by non-science majors including many prospective K-12 teachers. Dramatic chemical demonstrations were first presented to the undergraduate students by the instructor, and then they used demonstration activities to teach each other during the semester. Finally, these undergraduates presented to the K-6 students in the Norfolk Statue University (NSU) Summer Children’s College. The perceptions of science by the undergraduates at the beginning and end of the course were assessed using …

Do State Content Standards Make A Difference? An Illustration Of The Difficulties Of Addressing That Pressing Question, Elizabeth Dutro Jan 2002

Do State Content Standards Make A Difference? An Illustration Of The Difficulties Of Addressing That Pressing Question, Elizabeth Dutro

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

This article discusses the complexities surrounding the relationship between state content standards and student achievement. Drawing on interviews and document analysis, this paper describes one case of how the embedded contexts of state, district, and an individual teacher’s experiences interacted around state content standards in literacy. Student test scores improved, but what led to that improvement is not easily determined. This case reveals that what appears to be an ideal outcome of adopting standards in curriculum planning is really much more complicated, involving district initiatives, curriculum adoption, shifting district demographics, and the individual expertise of teachers.

Middle school teachers from an outer ring suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, combined lesson study with action research to determine whether the four-column writing method …

Modeling A Real-Time Economics Simulation With User-Coded Agents In An Object-Oriented Database, Kevin Simons Jan 2002

Modeling A Real-Time Economics Simulation With User-Coded Agents In An Object-Oriented Database, Kevin Simons

Honors Theses

A simulation tbat models the stock market with real-time stock quotes was created. Users can translate their own theories about investing into Java code, which is then used to create an intelligent agent. The agent is inserted into the simulation, which allows the agent to gather data from the model. Based on this data, the agent uses the algorithm the user wrote to buy and sell stocks. Such as model provides a means of testing investment theories before investing.

Investigations Of Intramolecular Copper (I)-Arene Interactions Using A Ns2-Macrocyclic Ligand With Different Pendant Aryl Arms, Paul J. Lee Jan 2002

Investigations Of Intramolecular Copper (I)-Arene Interactions Using A Ns2-Macrocyclic Ligand With Different Pendant Aryl Arms, Paul J. Lee

Honors Theses

Two macrocyclic ligands with a pendant phenyl group -N-[2-(l-phenyl)ethyl]-1-aza-4,8di thiacyclodecane (L1) and N-[2-0-phenyl)propyl]-1-aza-4,8-dithiacyclodecane, (L2) has been synthesized and characterized. The copper(I)-triphenylphosphine complex [LICu(PPhJ)]OTf , (2) was synthesized from L1 1/2(C6H6)[CuOTf]2, and PPh3. The complexes [LICu]OTf 1 and [L2Cu]OTf 3 were also synthesized and characterized using DC and IH NMR, UV-vis and lR spectroscopy, and ESI-MS. In CD2Cl2, 1 was found to have a fluxional behavior with the barrier ΔG to the process estimated at 9-11 kcal/mol. Variable temp. NMR spectroscopy of 1 gave compelling evidence that the phenylappended group is bound in an intramolecullar η2-fashion with the copper center. At …

Local Participation As A Determinant Of Success In World Bank Environmental Projects: What Is The Evidence?, Catherine Benson Jan 2002

Local Participation As A Determinant Of Success In World Bank Environmental Projects: What Is The Evidence?, Catherine Benson

Honors Theses

The current impoverished, environmentally degraded state of Africa suggests that international aid projects have proven largely unsuccessful in tackling the enormous development and environment challenges faced by Africa. Africa has historically been inundated with groups trying to implement change in the form of political, economic, and environmental agendas, beginning in the colonial period and continuing today. The abundance of advice and financial assistance poured into this region have resulted in a continent lagging behind other developing regions to an even worse extent than prior to aid projects. The environment of development in Africa is complex; nowhere else in the world …

Using the Balloon Borne Radio Sonde (BBSS) system launched four times per day, we collected ambient temperature profiles and lapse rates from the period of June to September of

2001. Concurrently the Rass Radar Wind Profiler collected vertical wind speed data at 915 MHz continuously throughout this period. The BBSS data is visualized using a Skew-T …

Asset-Base: New Reserve Requirements For A New Banking Industry, James Robert Bryans Jan 2002

Asset-Base: New Reserve Requirements For A New Banking Industry, James Robert Bryans

Masters Theses

This paper discusses a regulatory plan known as asset-based reserve requirements. By examining the history of reserve requirements in the United States and of current regulatory proposals and practices, I argue that a system of asset-based reserve requirements may provide a useful, though not often considered alternative to the current structures of liability based reserve requirements and capital requirements. Required reserves based on assets provide the Federal Reserve with a powerful, versatile, and adaptable policy tool for monetary policy. Additionally, they ensure risk-assessment, reduce the moral hazard problem associated with deposit insurance, and when applied to all fmancial institutions create …

Learning Styles Of Teachers And Usage Of Technology, Kiranmayi Padmaraju Jan 2002

Learning Styles Of Teachers And Usage Of Technology, Kiranmayi Padmaraju

Masters Theses

'Every child can learn' is the mantra being advocated today. The Multiple Intelligences theory put forth by Gardner has revolutionized the perceptions of learning styles. Currently more and more teachers are accepting the reality that children learn differently and in this context, their own learning style should not be a limiting factor for using multiple modes of instruction in their classrooms. A correlational study will be done to determine if there is a relationship between learning styles of the teacher and technology usage, particularly computer-based technology. The subjects in this study will be inservice teachers (N = 30). The MIDAS …

High Spatial Resolution Thermal Conductivity Of Bulk Zno (0001), Diana I. Florescu, L. G. Mourokh, Fred H. Pollak, David C. Look, G. Cantwell, X. Li

Physics Faculty Publications

We measured high spatial/depth resolution 300 K thermal conductivity κ of the Zn and O surfaces of two bulk n-type ZnO (0001) samples, grown by a vapor-phase transport method, using scanning thermal microscopy (SThM). The thermal investigation was performed in both point-by-point (∼2 μm resolution) and area-scan modes. On the first sample κ=1.16±0.08 (Zn face)/1.10±0.09 (O face) W/cm K while for the second material κ=1.02±0.07 (Zn face)/0.98±0.08 (O face) W/cm K. These are the highest κ values reported on ZnO. A correlation between SThM area-scan readings and surface topography was established by simultaneously performing atomic force microscopy scans. The …

A Review Of Systems: New Paradigms For The Human Sciences, Martin Zwick Jan 2002

A Review Of Systems: New Paradigms For The Human Sciences, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay is a selective review of Systems: New Paradigms for the Human Sciences, edited by Gabriel Altmann and Walter A. Koch (Berlin: Walter de Gryter, 1998). It is selective because it is impossible to engage such a varied collection of systems-theoretic essays in a review of reasonable length. To invoke a relevant dialectical idea: the characteristic strength of any system is often also its characteristic weakness. One strength and weakness of the systems field is its great diversity, and this diversity is reflected in this volume by the range of subjects addressed in its 27 articles. I will not …

Sar Simulations In Wireless Communication And Safety Discussions In The Society, M. O. Özyalçin, Funda Akleman, Levent Sevgi̇

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Numerical simulation in cellular phone - human tissue interaction is discussed in this paper. The powerful time domain (TD) techniques, the transmission line matrix (TLM) and the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods, are used to model mutual effects. The purpose is to calculate specific absorption rate (SAR; defined as the power absorbed by the unit mass of the tissue), validate the codes and verify the results. Also, effectiveness of the SAR parameter in determination of the exposure limits for human health and environmental pollution is discussed.
