Proportionality Of Financial Ratios And Prediction Of The Company Performance Of Stocks In The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, Siew Foong Yeong

Student Works (2000-2009)

This paper analyses the proportionality assumption of financial ratios generated from counters selected from Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE), Malaysia. Proportionality assumption in financial ratios is essential in financial statement analysis as it allows us to compare ratios across firms of different sizes. Thus, it also allows us to use financial ratio to further our analysis into company performance prediction. Earning Per Share (EPS) and Revenue Per Share (RPS) are among the tools in measuring company performance. OLS regression analysis with enter-all-variables and stepwise methods will be used to forecast company performance, where this year (n) financial ratios will be …

Topological Sweep In Degenerate Cases, Eynat Rafalin, Diane Souvaine, Ileana Streinu Jan 2002

Topological Sweep In Degenerate Cases, Eynat Rafalin, Diane Souvaine, Ileana Streinu

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Topological sweep can contribute to efficient implementations of various algorithms for data analysis. Real data, however, has degeneracies. The modification of the topological sweep algorithm presented here handles degenerate cases such as parallel or multiply concurrent lines without requiring numerical perturbations to achieve general position. Our method maintains the 0(n2) and 0(n) time and space complexities of the original algorithm, and is robust and easy to implement. We present experimental results.

First of all, ATM technology and ATM switch are introduced, then the ATM switch's architecture and its functions are discussed in detail. A Two-State ATM Tandem Banyan Switch has been selected as a model to be simulated. MATLAB's Simulink tool has been used to dynamically model the ATM switch. The ATM switch simulated is a simple two-stage Banyan Switch. It consists of 2 lnports x 2 Outports, with a switching algorithm included. The algorithm covers all cell flow patterns that are possible in a 2 lnports x 2 …

The Economic Value Of Companion Animals: A Legal And Anthropological Argument For Special Valuation, Geordie Duckler Jan 2002

The Economic Value Of Companion Animals: A Legal And Anthropological Argument For Special Valuation, Geordie Duckler

Animal Law Review

Mr. Duckler delves into valuation issues that arise in the context of recovery of non-economic damages for death and injury to companion animals. He argues that the special nature of companion animals in society necessitates an assigned monetary worth to such animals that is distinct from and exceeds mere market value. As support for this contention, Mr. Duckler provides relevant legal, sociological, and anthropological analyses.

Piagetian Developmental Reasoning Levels Of High School Students In Differentiated First Year Chemistry Courses, Pamela Kay Brewer-Michael Jan 2002

Piagetian Developmental Reasoning Levels Of High School Students In Differentiated First Year Chemistry Courses, Pamela Kay Brewer-Michael

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research studied the developmental reasoning levels of students in three different first year high school chemistry courses as related to achievement defined by cumulative grade point average and course selection. The Lawson Test of Formal Operations modified by Roy Unruh and Bruce Perry at the University of Northern Iowa was used to determine cognitive developmental level of subjects. A consumer type chemistry course, a traditional high school chemistry course, and an honors course under consideration with Marshalltown Community College for credit status were the three courses utilized in this study. Data was collected in a classroom group setting over …

Improving Student Achievement And Attitude In Middle Grade Social Studies Classes Through Learning Style Instruction And Design, Jennifer D. Vincent Jan 2002

Improving Student Achievement And Attitude In Middle Grade Social Studies Classes Through Learning Style Instruction And Design, Jennifer D. Vincent

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to improve student achievement and attitude in a middle school social studies class. Students were not performing well on tests and exams after experiencing traditional visual and auditory instructional methods. The Jack of diversity and creativity in delivery of instruction resulted in limited academic achievement and poor attitude towards social studies learning. Furthermore, long-term memory was also negatively affected because the traditional teaching approaches did not emphasize higher level thinking that promotes greater retention. The study integrates theoretical research concerning how students learn to the development of a strong historical rationale for implementing learning styles …

Identifying And Comparing Misconceptions Held By American And Russian University Students In Mechanics, Alexandra Sokolova

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This paper reports on a study of misconceptions held by undergraduate students completing an introductory physics course at the University of Northern Iowa and first-year undergraduate students taking a mechanics course at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia. Existence of misconceptions in mechanics among Russian and American students was investigated prior to instruction and at the completion of the one-semester course. Different teaching approaches were used to introduce the students to mechanics. An activity-based approach was emphasized at UNI and a traditional lecture-lab approach was used at Herzen University. The emphasis of the study was placed on identifying misconceptions …

Is "Thinking Like A Lawyer" Really What We Want To Teach?, Nancy B. Rapoport Jan 2002

Is "Thinking Like A Lawyer" Really What We Want To Teach?, Nancy B. Rapoport

Scholarly Works

This article argues that the phrase thinking like a lawyer assumes that other professions don't have their own ways of approaching problems and that law schools only need to teach how lawyers think, rather than how lawyers do what they do. It suggests that law schools should do much more than just teach law students how to think.

Querying Geographically Dispersed, Heterogeneous Data Stores: The Pperfxchange Approach, Matthew Edward Colgrove

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis details PPerfXchange’s approach for querying geographically dispersed heterogeneous data stores. While elements of PPerfXchange’s method have been implemented for other application areas, PPerfXchange shows how these elements can be applied to parallel performance analysis. The accomplishments of this thesis are:

  • The design of an architecture for PPerfXchange, giving a uniform method to query heterogeneous data stores;
  • A proof of concept prototype implementation of PPerfXchange including a partial implementation of an XQuery processor and a relational database virtual XML document; and
  • Evaluation of PPerfXchange using example parallel performance analysis data.

Teaching Mathematical Problem Solving In The Context Of Oregon's Educational Reform, Nicole R. Rigelman Jan 2002

Teaching Mathematical Problem Solving In The Context Of Oregon's Educational Reform, Nicole R. Rigelman

Dissertations and Theses

Implementation of Oregon’s Educational Reform Act (HB 3565 and HB 2991) provides the context for this inquiry as its emphasis on problem solving has impacted mathematics teaching and learning throughout the state. These goals and these practices are influenced by the way teachers view the role of problem solving in the curriculum. Further, their practice is influenced by their knowledge and beliefs about mathematics content, teaching, learning, and the reform policy. The questions addressed in this study are: (1) What do exemplary …

In Situ Hydraulic Testing And Water Quality Sampling In The Hyporheic Zone Of The Columbia River, Hanford Reach, Washington, Evan V. Arntzen Jan 2002

In Situ Hydraulic Testing And Water Quality Sampling In The Hyporheic Zone Of The Columbia River, Hanford Reach, Washington, Evan V. Arntzen

Dissertations and Theses

Several chemical and radiological contaminants are present in an unconfined aquifer underlying the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site in southeast Washington State. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], previously used as an anticorrosive in plutonium production reactors on the shoreline of the Columbia River, is of particular concern because of its conservative nature, toxicity to humans and aquatic life, and proximity to protected salmon spawning habitat. Hydrogeologic data are abundant from the unconfined aquifer, but are lacking from the hyporheic zone through which Cr(VI) is transported into the river. A hydrogeologic study was conducted near one known Cr(VI) plume to determine the …
