Multiple Model Networks In Non-Linear System Modelling For Control – A Review, Ruiyao Gao, Aidan O'Dwyer Jan 2002

Multiple Model Networks In Non-Linear System Modelling For Control – A Review, Ruiyao Gao, Aidan O'Dwyer

Conference papers

Non-linear processes, by their nature, are non-uniform and invariably require custom designed control schemes to deal with individual characteristics. No general theory deals comprehensively with the wide range of non-linear systems encountered. In an attempt to accurately model non-linear dynamical systems, a wide variety of techniques have been developed such as non-linear auto-regressive moving average with exogeneous inputs (NARMAX) models (Chen and Billings, 1989), Weiner models (Schetzen, 1981), Hammerstein models (Billings and Fakhouri, 1982) and Multiple Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural networks (Narendra and Kannan, 1990). While the accuracy of such models offers a potentially significant improvement over linear models, the …

Determining If Two Ellipsoids Share The Same Volume, Salvatore Alfano, Meredith L. Greer Jan 2002

Determining If Two Ellipsoids Share The Same Volume, Salvatore Alfano, Meredith L. Greer

All Faculty Scholarship

An analytical method is presented for determining if two ellipsoids share the same volume. The formulation involves adding an extra dimension to the solution space and examining eigenvalues that are associated with degenerate quadric surfaces. The eigenvalue behavior is characterized and then demonstrated with an example. The same method is also used to determine if two ellipsoids appear to share the same projected area based on an oberver's viewing angle. The following approach yields direct results without approximation, iteration, or any form of numerical search. It is computationally efficient in the sense that no dimensional distortions, coordinate rotations, transformations, or …

Development Of A Numerical Model For Shallow Marine Ecosystems With Application To Greenwich Bay, Rhode Island, Mark James Brush Jan 2002

Development Of A Numerical Model For Shallow Marine Ecosystems With Application To Greenwich Bay, Rhode Island, Mark James Brush

Open Access Dissertations

Numerical models have become increasingly important tools for the study of marine ecosystems. While these models serve as valuable research and heuristic tools, they are not yet to the point of producing reliable predictions upon which to base management decisions. Further, most existing models of coastal systems have been constructed for relatively deep estuaries rather than shallow, nearshore systems which receive the bulk of anthropogenic nutrient loading and experience the most extreme degradation in water quality. A numerical model was developed for shallow marine ecosystems which contain both pelagic and benthic compartments of the food web. A series of innovations …

Non-Normality Of Asset Returns In The Assessment Of Risk-Adjusted Performance: Three Empirical Tests Of The Leland Alternative Asset Pricing Model, Sean Frederick Reid Jan 2002

Non-Normality Of Asset Returns In The Assessment Of Risk-Adjusted Performance: Three Empirical Tests Of The Leland Alternative Asset Pricing Model, Sean Frederick Reid

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation research examines the theoretical model offered by Leland (1999) as an alternative to the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). Leland's alternative risk-adjusting parameter, B, should improve over the CAPM β where the model is misspecified by the impact of a non-normal return distribution. This is especially true in highly skewed portfolios. In the first essay, we provide the first empirical examination of Leland's model using actual security returns. We seek to identify characteristics of securities where β and B differ significantly. We find the most significant differences between β and B occur where the security returns are most …

A Tabu Search Approach For The Dynamic Space Allocation Problem., Juan R. Jaramillo Jan 2002

A Tabu Search Approach For The Dynamic Space Allocation Problem., Juan R. Jaramillo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The dynamic space allocation problem (DSAP) is the assigning of activities to workspaces and idle resources to storage spaces while minimizing the total distance traveled by the resources during project duration. The inputs of the DSAP are: the schedule of project activities and the resources required to perform the activities, the layout of the floor plan, the capacity of the storage spaces, and the distances between locations. The output is a sequence of layouts containing the assignments of the activities and their resources to workspaces, as well as the idle resources to storage spaces. The DSAP is related to some …

The Logician Versus The Linguist- An Empirical Tale Of Functional Discrimination In The Legal Academy, Andrea Kayne Kaufman Jan 2002

The Logician Versus The Linguist- An Empirical Tale Of Functional Discrimination In The Legal Academy, Andrea Kayne Kaufman

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This paper, focusing exclusively on gender, asks whether male and female law students express different preferences for logic-based learning models. A wide variety of educational theories and other theories have been used to conceptualize different learning preferences among law students but until now, none has focused on logical intelligence compared with the other intelligences. Using Harvard educational psychologist Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences, this paper describes an empirical study establishing that male and female law students express differences in preferring logical intelligence over the other intelligences. This paper introduces the concept of "functional discrimination," addressing the ways in which …

Sm 601, 602, 603 Supervised Ministry Handbook, Asbury Theological Seminary

Syllabi

Welcome to Supervised Ministries! Supervised Ministries is a required core component of the academic curriculum. It aims to bridge the gap between strictly academic theology and ministry practice. It integrates the light of the chapel, classroom and library with the field laboratory. That is, we want to reduce the gap between learned theology and internalized theology which applies itself to Christian experience and ministry practice. As John Wesley, quoting an ancient, quipped, “God made divinity practical”.

How Far Have We Come, And Where Do We Go From Here: The Status Of Global Computer Software Protection Under The Trips Agreement, Aaron D. Charfoos Jan 2002

How Far Have We Come, And Where Do We Go From Here: The Status Of Global Computer Software Protection Under The Trips Agreement, Aaron D. Charfoos

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The TRIPS agreement made significant advances over the pre-TRIPS international regime with respect to the protection of computer software. There are at least two significant advances. First, computer software protections have been embedded into the new dispute resolution procedures. Second, both object and source code are protected under the copyright sections of the Agreement. The dispute resolution procedures provide back-end protection (protection after offenses have occurred), while new copyright provisions provide affirmative front-end protection (protection deterring such offenses). However, the Agreement could have, and should have, gone farther to protect the software industry. By not formally deciding on the ability …

A Survey Of Various Frequency Domain Integral Equations For The Analysis Of Scattering From Three-Dimensional Dielectric Objects, Baek Ho Jung, T. K. Sarkar, Y.-S. Chung Jan 2002

A Survey Of Various Frequency Domain Integral Equations For The Analysis Of Scattering From Three-Dimensional Dielectric Objects, Baek Ho Jung, T. K. Sarkar, Y.-S. Chung

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In this paper, we present four different formulations for the analysis of electromagnetic scattering from arbitrarily shaped three-dimensional (3-D) homogeneous dielectric body in the frequency domain. The four integral equations treated here are the electric field integral equation (EFIE), the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE), the combined field integral equation (CFIE), and the PMCHW (Poggio, Miller, Chang, Harrington, and Wu) formulation. For the CFIE case, we propose eight separate formulations with different combinations of expansion and testing functions that result in sixteen different formulations of CFIE. One of the objectives of this paper is to illustrate that not all CFIE …

Rates Of Sedimentation In The Central Arctic Ocean, Jan Backman, Martin Jakobsson, Reidar Lovlie, Leonid Polyak Jan 2002

Rates Of Sedimentation In The Central Arctic Ocean, Jan Backman, Martin Jakobsson, Reidar Lovlie, Leonid Polyak

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The Arctic Ocean is presently undergoing geoscientific investigations of the type that occurred during the late 1940's through 1960's in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Seismic reflection and refraction data are scarce in the Arctic Ocean and large areas are virtually unsampled with respect to piston or gravity coring. The vast majority of available cores are less than10 m in length and largely lack biostratigraphically useful calcareous and siliceous microfossils. No drill cores exist from the ridges or deep basins in the central Arctic Ocean. Considering the limited geophysical and geological data available, it is not surprising that current …

Calculation Of Spectral Degradation Due To Contaminant Films On Infrared And Optical Sensors, L. Gamble, John R. Dennison, B. Wood, J. Herrick, J. S. Dyer

All Physics Faculty Publications

Molecular surface contaminants can cause degradation of optical systems, especially if the contaminants exhibit strong absorption bands in the region of interest. Different strategies for estimation of spectral degradation responses due to uniform films for various types of systems are reviewed. One tool for calculating the effects of contaminant film thickness on signal degradation in the mid IR region is the simulation program CALCRT. The CALCRT database will be reviewed to correlate spectral n and k values associated with specific classes of organic functional groups. Various schemes are also investigated to estimate the spectral degradation in the UV-Vis region. Experimental …

The Principle Of Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Mark E. Fels, Charles G. Torre Jan 2002

The Principle Of Symmetric Criticality In General Relativity, Mark E. Fels, Charles G. Torre

All Physics Faculty Publications

We consider a version of Palais' principle of symmetric criticality (PSC) that is applicable to the Lie symmetry reduction of Lagrangian field theories. Given a group action on a space of fields, PSC asserts that for any group-invariant Lagrangian, the equations obtained by restriction of Euler–Lagrange equations to group-invariant fields are equivalent to the Euler–Lagrange equations of a canonically defined, symmetry-reduced Lagrangian. We investigate the validity of PSC for local gravitational theories built from a metric and show that there are two independent conditions which must be satisfied for PSC to be valid. One of these conditions, obtained previously in …

Rethinking Mechanistic Explanation, Stuart Glennan Jan 2002

Rethinking Mechanistic Explanation, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Philosophers of science typically associate the causal-mechanical view of scientific explanation with the work of Railton and Salmon. In this paper I shall argue that the defects of this view arise from an inadequate analysis of the concept of mechanism. I contrast Salmon's account of mechanisms in terms of the causal nexus with my own account of mechanisms, in which mechanisms are viewed as complex systems. After describing these two concepts of mechanism, I show how the complex-systems approach avoids certain objections to Salmon's account of causal-mechanical explanation. I conclude by discussing how mechanistic explanations can provide understanding by unification.

A Prototype Asic For Apd Array Readout Of Scintillating Plastic Fibers, John R. Macri, A L. Wintenerg, Mark Widholm, U Jagadish, J Ledoux, Mark L. Mcconnell, S Shane Frank, Hansford H. Cutlip

Space Science Center

We report on the development of custom front-end electronics for use with avalanche photodiode (APD) arrays as part of a NASA technology study for the readout of scintillating plastic fibers. APD arrays featuring 64 1 mm square pixels are used. We demonstrate that a pixel of these APD arrays coupled to relatively thin (0.25 mm) and short (15 cm) scintillating plastic fibers can be used to detect and measure the tracks of even minimum ionizing particles (MIPs). An applicationspecific integrated circuit (ASIC) implementation of the electronics is required to produce a detector sufficiently compact for practical use in a flight …
