Analyzing Speeding-Related Crash Severity On Louisiana’S Highways, Nelly Akweley Ankrah

Masters Theses

Speeding is a major contributing factor to roadway crashes and remains a significant safety concern. Understanding the factors influencing speeding crash severity and how they vary across roadway environments is essential for developing effective safety countermeasures. A total of 22,151 speeding-related crashes recorded in Louisiana between 2015 and 2024 were analyzed. Crashes were categorized by FHWA functional classification into three roadway groups: Interstates and Principal Arterials, Minor Arterials and Collectors, and Local Roads. Four spatial machine learning models, GXGBoost, SDT, GRF, and GeoKNN, were evaluated to classify crash severity outcomes, as traditional models do not account for the spatial dependence …

Automating Distillation Column Internals Design Via Reinforcement Learning: A Hybrid Action Space Approach, Holden B. Broussard Jun 2026

Automating Distillation Column Internals Design Via Reinforcement Learning: A Hybrid Action Space Approach, Holden B. Broussard

Masters Theses

Distillation columns are the most used separation technique in all chemical fields. The design of column internals presents a hybrid action space problem, where trayed internal parameters are continuous and packed parameters are discrete; Hybrid meaning the action space consists of both discrete and continuous design parameters. Hybrid action spaces have presented a challenge in the reinforcement learning space, since the most robust algorithms are designed to handle specific action types. This research develops and validates a hierarchical multi-agent reinforcement learning framework that divides the action spaces into different agents. The Controller agent selects between internal types, the Soft Actor- …

Emerging Catalysts And System Designs For High-Current-Density Co2 Electroreduction To Multicarbon Fuels And Chemicals Toward Industrial-Scale Applications, Godwin Uche Edor

Masters Theses

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (eCO2RR) offers a sustainable route to convert CO2 into value-added fuels and chemicals, particularly multicarbon (C2+) products due to their higher energy density and economic value compared to C1 counterparts. Industrial adoption of eCO2RR technology is hindered by the difficulty in stably reaching superior Faradaic efficiency (FE) for C2+ products at ≥ 200 mA cm-2 at low applied overpotential due to sluggish C–C coupling kinetics, competing reactions, and catalyst instability. Hence, we examine the recent advances in eCO2RR catalyst engineering strategies, such as nanostructural and electronic modifications of Cu-based catalysts (e.g., interfacial, surface, facet, and defect engineering, …

Micro-Hyperspectral Imaging Of Phytoplankton Enables Deconvolution Of Mixed Communities For Spaceborne Hyperspectral Remote Sensing, Chisom Okwuchi Emeghiebo Jun 2026

Micro-Hyperspectral Imaging Of Phytoplankton Enables Deconvolution Of Mixed Communities For Spaceborne Hyperspectral Remote Sensing, Chisom Okwuchi Emeghiebo

Masters Theses

Characterizing phytoplankton diversity is critical for large-scale biodiversity monitoring and harmful algal bloom (HAB) detection. Here, we present a micro hyperspectral imaging method to characterize reflectance signatures, for the first time across major phytoplankton groups. Spectral variability among taxa in laboratory cultures is interpreted using algal pigment and absorption analyses, demonstrating that pigment composition and absorption govern reflectance features. Chlorophytes and cryptophytes exhibit distinct spectral signatures and are readily distinguishable, whereas diatoms and dinoflagellates show greater spectral similarity, with differentiation relying on subtle reflectance features associated with chlorophyll c₁c₂ near ~463 nm and within 620–650 nm. We further applied this …

Geological Carbon Storage In Deep, Low Permeable Shale Reservoirs: Insights From The Haynesville Formation, Louisiana, Himakshi Goswami

Masters Theses

As global initiatives to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions intensify, depleted unconventional shale gas formations have emerged as critical candidates for large-scale geological carbon storage (GCS). This study investigates the feasibility, dynamic trapping mechanisms, and operational optimization of CO₂ sequestration in deep, low-permeability shale reservoirs, using the Upper Jurassic Haynesville Shale in northwest Louisiana as a comprehensive case study. Compositional reservoir simulation (CMG GEM 2021.10) was performed using the SPE Haynesville dataset, with CO₂ injected at a rate of 10,000 ft³/day across single and multiple depth intervals spanning 11,290–11,314 feet. Results demonstrate that multi-depth injection significantly improves residual trapping, reduces buoyancy-driven …

Linking Greenhouse Gas Fluxes And Plant Responses To Saltwater Intrusion Events Using Remote Sensing, Madeline Jean Moore Jun 2026

Linking Greenhouse Gas Fluxes And Plant Responses To Saltwater Intrusion Events Using Remote Sensing, Madeline Jean Moore

Masters Theses

As sea level rise and coastal subsidence increase coastal Louisiana's vulnerability to saltwater intrusion (SWI) events, accurate and rapid monitoring of vegetation responses to these events is becoming increasingly important. In this study, we utilized unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral imagery to assess short-term vegetation responses to simulated SWI events in the Visser’s Experimental Wetland Complex in Saint Martinville, Louisiana. Vegetation patches of two common freshwater wetland species, Panicum hemitomon (Maidencane) and Typha domingensis (Southern Cattail), were exposed to 5 ppt salinity for 6-, 10-, and 17-day durations. Multispectral imagery of both species was collected before and after each SWI …

Classifying Storm Surges Along Louisiana Coast Using Machine Learning, Faith Ewere Okunbor Jun 2026

Classifying Storm Surges Along Louisiana Coast Using Machine Learning, Faith Ewere Okunbor

Masters Theses

Storm surges are among the most significant threats to coastal wetlands, causing flooding and saltwater intrusion that alter hydrology, vegetation structure, and long-term ecosystem resilience. Along the Louisiana coast, storm surge effects vary depending on storm behavior, shoreline geometry, and marsh hydrologic connectivity, yet are commonly characterized using broad storm metrics rather than site-specific environmental responses. This study develops a data-driven framework to classify storm surges across coastal Louisiana wetlands using observations from the Coastwide Reference Monitoring System (CRMS). Hourly water-level and salinity time series from twelve hurricanes (2007-2024) were analyzed using a 40-day storm-centered window. Hydrologic and salinity metrics …

Optimizing Co₂ Wag Flooding Parameters For Enhanced Oil Recovery And Formation Damage Control In Asphaltene Reservoirs Using Soft Experimentation, Derrick Amoah Oladele

Masters Theses

CO₂ Water Alternating Gas flooding has become an important enhanced oil recovery process in increasing oil production in medium to heavy oil reservoirs. However, CO₂ injections have the potential to cause asphaltene destabilization, leading to precipitation, deposition, and pore plugging. This study evaluated and optimized the effect of CO₂ flooding parameters to maximize oil recovery and minimized formation damage. Eclipse 300 compositional reservoir simulator was used to assess the effect of CO₂ Water Alternating Gas (WAG) Injection Rate, WAG Ratio, and CO₂ Water Alternating Gas (WAG) Injection Pressure on the reservoir. Predictive models for Cumulative Oil Production (FOPT) and Asphaltene …

Regioselective Tellurination Reactions And Their Utilities, Itunu Comfort Olanrewaju

Masters Theses

This thesis provides a comprehensive study of regioselective tellurination and its applications by integrating experimental and computational techniques, with an aim of synthesizing libraries of organotellurium heterocycles. This study addresses existing challenges in regioselective tellurination, such as unpredictable regioselectivity and avoidance of toxic reagents by harnessing intramolecular Te…O coordination and electrophilic aromatic tellurination. This strategy enables the development of previously poorly accessible compounds including benzotellurazinones, 2-acylaminobenzotellurazoles, and previously unknown 2,3-dihydrobenzo [b] oxatelluranes, which were prepared by antiMarkovnikov anti-addition of TeCl4 to C-C triple bonds. Experimental studies were complemented by computational DFT analyses to provide mechanistic and energetic insight into the …

Stratigraphic Distribution Of Pleistocene Aves At Fossil Lake In Lake County, Oregon, Cole Bradley Phillips Jun 2026

Stratigraphic Distribution Of Pleistocene Aves At Fossil Lake In Lake County, Oregon, Cole Bradley Phillips

Masters Theses

The Fossil Lake locality in south-central Oregon is rich in many species of fossil remains and is also home to packages of sandstone that grade upward into finer siltstone or claystone. These packages have been interpreted to represent rising and falling lake levels as a result of glacial transgressive and regressive sequences. The fossil vertebrates and invertebrates have also fluctuated because of the different climates at Fossil Lake. Although the stratigraphic distribution of most classes of animals have been determined, fossil birds have not. Here, the distribution of 329 avian fossils is presented in the stratigraphic framework. The species were …

Disparities In The Identification Of Vulnerable Communities Due To Design Storm Methods: A Case Study In The Vermilion River Watershed, South Louisiana, Usa, Claire Orgeron Jun 2026

Disparities In The Identification Of Vulnerable Communities Due To Design Storm Methods: A Case Study In The Vermilion River Watershed, South Louisiana, Usa, Claire Orgeron

Masters Theses

Accurately identifying socially vulnerable populations at-risk of flooding is critical for equitable disaster mitigation and planning. This study investigates how the selection of design storm method, which is fundamental to developing flood risk maps used for this identification, influences which socially vulnerable populations are recognized as being at elevated flood risk. The most widely used design storm approach relies on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Atlas 14 point-based rainfall frequency estimates. These estimates are typically applied spatially using areal reduction factors, thereby disregarding rainfall spatial variability in real storms. Stochastic Storm Transposition (SST), an alternative design storm approach that …

Our research introduces a computational framework designed to detect and quantify emotional expressions across various documents over time. Leveraging state-of-the-art transformer models fine-tuned on domain-specific corpora, the framework models emotional tone distribution. Integrating emotion analysis with knowledge graph modeling enables the exploration of emotional trends alongside key scientific …

Jsd: Novel Methodology For Synthetic Data Evaluation, Jeffrey Lane, Scott Wang, Vincent Chang, Bojun Zhang Jun 2026

Jsd: Novel Methodology For Synthetic Data Evaluation, Jeffrey Lane, Scott Wang, Vincent Chang, Bojun Zhang

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

The proliferation of sensitive Personally Identifiable Information (PII) on dark web marketplaces has created an urgent need for robust data protection systems, especially for vulnerable populations such as minors. Traditional PII redaction often fails to identify implicit privacy risks—such as author gender indicators or non-fictional child-related context—hidden within large-scale e-commerce datasets. This paper presents JSD, a dual-stage framework for the detection and protection of sensitive text data. The Detection phase utilizes Transformer and CNN-based architectures and Human-in-the-Loop AI to surpass the "semantic ceiling" of traditional NER approaches, enabling context-aware identification of implicit PII. The Protection phase introduces GASE (Genetic Algorithm …

Hemlock, Ephraim Esson, Ambrose Vellequette, Geno Meschi Jun 2026

Hemlock, Ephraim Esson, Ambrose Vellequette, Geno Meschi

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

Hemlock is a tool designed to protect musicians from having their work used to train generative AI models without their consent. It works by adding carefully crafted inaudible noise to audio files that disrupts the ability of AI models to learn from them — a technique known as adversarial perturbation. Our system targets three different types of AI model simultaneously: a Music Information Retrieval (MIR) classifier, a sequential audio generation model (Mel-LSTM), and Meta’s AudioCraft, a transformer-based music generator. Testing in twenty songs showed an average 15% reduction in the MIR model’s classification confidence, a 59% increase in Mel- LSTM …

A Large Language Model-Based Analysis Of Vulnerability Discovery In Windows Software, Puya Pakshad, Samson Quaye, Jamal Al-Karaki, Marwan Omar, Maurice E. Dawson

All Works

Source code security auditing is essential before software release in order to identify programming faults that may lead to vulnerabilities and functional failures. In this paper, we present a structured security assessment of the Windows App SDK by integrating multiple static analysis tools with a context-aware and disagreement-aware Large Language Model (LLM) interpretation layer. Although static analyzers are effective in reporting potential weaknesses, their raw outputs often contain redundant alerts, limited contextual explanation, and inconsistent severity assignments. To address these limitations, the proposed LLM-based interpretation layer normalizes and de-duplicates alerts, filters context-limited or nonactionable warnings, and refines severity prioritization under …

30 Db On-Chip Ultra-High Inverse Weak Value Amplification, Yuhan Mei, Meiting Song, Andrew N. Jordan, Jaime Cardenas

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Weak value amplification (WVA) has emerged as a powerful technique that enhances measurement precision. However, traditional table-top WVA setups and on-chip demonstrations have not achieved an amplification over 20 dB. The practical limit of the amplification is the fidelity of photon post-selection. To address this limit, we design a weak value device with an over 30 dB interferometer extinction ratio, where the stray light in the dark port is minimized with thermally tunable phase shifters. As a result, the device successfully shows 30 dB WVA, termed ultra-high WVA. This WVA optimization strategy by improving interferometer extinction is extensible to a …

Applying Signal Detection Theory Using Evofinder To A 10-Consecutively Manufactured Barrel Study That Included Damaged Bullets, Ruheen Firoz Charania

ETDs from 2020-2029

The science of firearm and tool mark identification is based on the premise that no two tools produce the same microscopic detail and the tool that made the marks can be distinguished from all others. Based on the AFTE Theory of Identification, firearms comparisons can be classified as Identification, Elimination, Inconclusive, or Unsuitable for examination, with inconclusive indicating insufficient individual characteristics to support identification or exclusion. Error rates in firearm examinations are typically calculated by counting how often examiners make false-positive and false-negative conclusions relative to known ground truth, but inconclusive decisions complicate these calculations because they neither support nor …
