Readout And Performance Of Thick Czt Strip Detectors With Orthogonal Coplanar Anodes, John R. Macri, B Donmez, L A. Hamel, Manuel Julien, M Mcclish, Mark L. Mcconnell, R S. Miller, James M. Ryan, Mark Widholm

Space Science Center

We report progress in the study of CZT strip detectors featuring orthogonal coplanar anode contacts. The work includes laboratory and simulation studies aimed at optimizing and developing compact, efficient, high performance detector modules for 0.05 to 1 MeV gamma radiation measurements. The novel coplanar anode strip configuration retains many of the performance advantages of pixel detectors yet requires far fewer electronic channels to perform both 3-d imaging and spectroscopy. We report on studies aimed at determining an optimum configuration of the analog signal processing electronics to employ with these detectors. We report measurements of energy and spatial resolution in three …

Equality And The Digital Divide, Gerald Doppelt Jan 2002

Equality And The Digital Divide, Gerald Doppelt

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Although distribution of computers and Internet access is important in equalizing information access, this article considers the concept of digital literacy. People not only need access to information, but an understanding of what to do with the knowledge acquired. Explore with Professor Doppelt the idea that the digital divide is a new aspect to the literacy divide, and the crucial role that education in public schools plays in equalizing opportunity.

Towards Nonmonotonic Reasoning On Hierarchical Knowledge, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2002

Towards Nonmonotonic Reasoning On Hierarchical Knowledge, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

W.C. Rounds and G.Q. Zhang have recently proposed to study a form of disjunctive logic programming generalized to algebraic domains [RZ01]. This system allows reasoning with information which is hierarchically structured and forms a (suitable) domain. We extend this framework to include reasoning with negative information, i.e. the implicit or explicit absence of bits of information. These investigations will naturally lead to a form of default reasoning which is strongly related to programming with answer sets to stable models, which has recently created much interest amongst artificial intelligence researchers concerned with knowledge representation and reasoning.

Boater Manatee Awareness System, Edward O. Keith Jan 2002

Boater Manatee Awareness System, Edward O. Keith

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

A variety of "see-in-the-dark" technologies have been evaluated with the objective of adapting them to detect Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) aggregations in specific highuse areas, such as warm water refuges in the winter time. Once it is possible to passively detect manatee aggregations in these sites, the construction of boater awareness signs that would indicate how many manatees are in the area, on a real-time basis, is envisioned. The contention is that boaters would be more likely to obey speed restrictions if these restrictions were accompanied by this type of information. The ability to do this also …

Coral Recruitment To Various Artificial Substrata, Miami Beach, Fl, Nicholas C. Straccione Jan 2002

Coral Recruitment To Various Artificial Substrata, Miami Beach, Fl, Nicholas C. Straccione

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The City of Miami has placed 12 artificial reefs approximately 100m offshore in two parallel transects. The reason for this deployment was to tum a barren seabed into a productive environment for aquatic organisms. The reefs were placed close to the shoreline to allow easy access for snorkellers, divers, and fisherman. Three different types of reef materials were used in constructing the artificial reefs: boulders composed of limestone, concrete shaped as tetrahedrons, and concrete mixed with tire aggregate shaped as tetrahedrons. This study consisted of two separate assessments: I) a survey from two of each of the different reef types …

A Comparison Of Aeration Methods And Diets For Larval Culture Of The Edible Sea Urchin, Tripneustes Ventricosus (Echinodermata: Echinoidea), Ray Wolcott

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Tripneustes ventricosus (Lamarck 1816), a major near-shore herbivore in the Atlantic and Caribbean, has been harvested for human consumption in the Caribbean for centuries (Lawrence 2001a, b), occasionally at rates that exceed sustainability (Smith & Berkes 1991), and is among the species having economic importance (Lawrence & Bazhin 1998). Tripneustes ventricosus has recently been observed on the forereef controlling macroalgal growth in the absence of Diadema antillarum (Woodley 1999, Aronson & Precht 2000, Haley & Solandt 2001).

Large-scale culturing has the potential to produce T. ventricosus in sufficient numbers to be used for: bioremediation of coral reef degradation, restocking of …

The Lisa Optimal Sensitivity, Thomas A. Prince, Massimo Tinto, Shane L. Larson, J. W. Armstrong Jan 2002

The Lisa Optimal Sensitivity, Thomas A. Prince, Massimo Tinto, Shane L. Larson, J. W. Armstrong

All Physics Faculty Publications

The multiple Doppler readouts available on the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) permit simultaneous formation of several interferometric observables. All these observables are independent of laser frequency fluctuations and have different couplings to gravitational waves and to the various LISA instrumental noises. Within the functional space of interferometric combinations LISA will be able to synthesize, we have identified a triplet of interferometric combinations that show optimally combined sensitivity. As an application of the method, we computed the sensitivity improvement for sinusoidal sources in the nominal, equal-arm LISA configuration. In the part of the Fourier band where the period of the …

Unequal Arm Space-Borne Gravitational Wave Detectors, Shane L. Larson, Ronald W. Hellings, William A. Hiscock Jan 2002

Unequal Arm Space-Borne Gravitational Wave Detectors, Shane L. Larson, Ronald W. Hellings, William A. Hiscock

All Physics Faculty Publications

Unlike ground-based interferometric gravitational wave detectors, large space-based systems will not be rigid structures. When the end stations of the laser interferometer are freely flying spacecraft, the armlengths will change due to variations in the spacecraft positions along their orbital trajectories, so the precise equality of the arms that is required in a laboratory interferometer to cancel laser phase noise is not possible. However, using a method discovered by Tinto and Armstrong, a signal can be constructed in which laser phase noise exactly cancels out, even in an unequal arm interferometer. We examine the case where the ratio of the …

Quantum Dynamics Of The Polarized Gowdy T3 Model, Charles G. Torre Jan 2002

Quantum Dynamics Of The Polarized Gowdy T3 Model, Charles G. Torre

All Physics Faculty Publications

The polarized Gowdy T3 vacuum spacetimes are characterized, modulo gauge, by a “point particle” degree of freedom and a function φ that satisfies a linear field equation and a nonlinear constraint. The quantum Gowdy model has been defined by using a representation for φ on a Fock space F. Using this quantum model, it has recently been shown that the dynamical evolution determined by the linear field equation for φ is not unitarily implemented on F. In this paper, (1) we derive the classical and quantum model using the “covariant phase space” formalism, (2) we show that time evolution is …

Biogenesis And Traffic Of The Potassium Channel, Natalie De Souza Jan 2002

Biogenesis And Traffic Of The Potassium Channel, Natalie De Souza

Student Theses and Dissertations

Excitability of nerve and muscle cells depends on the number and the types of ion channels expressed at the plasma membrane. This work examines aspects of biogenesis and traffic of the Shaker voltage-gated potassium channel. Shaker is an oligomeric, polytopic membrane protein and, as such, its biogenesis begins at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). I have studied (i) targeting of Shaker to the ER and stable integration into the lipid bilayer, (ii) N-linked glycosylation, assembly and folding Shaker in the ER, and (iii) export of Shaker from the ER and subsequent traffic to the surface. Targeting to the endoplasmic reticulum, integration …

Structural Studies Of Dna Replication Proteins By X-Ray Crystallography And Molecular Dynamics, Yanxiang Zhao Jan 2002

Structural Studies Of Dna Replication Proteins By X-Ray Crystallography And Molecular Dynamics, Yanxiang Zhao

Student Theses and Dissertations

Organisms that span evolutionary space utilize an assembly of proteins (the replicase) in a coordinated effort to faithfully replicate their genomes. This chromosomal replicase consists of three functionally distinct subassemblies. The first of these is the polymerase/exonuclease complex, which harbors DNA synthesis and proofreading activities. The second functional complex is the sliding clamp which adopts a ring-shaped structure, composed of either two or three protomers. It confers processivity onto the polymerase subunit by tethering it to the template. The third complex is the clamp loader complex, which loads the sliding clamp onto DNA using energy from ATP binding and hydrolysis. …

The Community Reinvestment Act And The Economics Of Regulatory Policy, Christopher A. Richardson Jan 2002

The Community Reinvestment Act And The Economics Of Regulatory Policy, Christopher A. Richardson

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article discusses the economic consequences and social implications of the Community Reinvestment Act. The CRA has direct economic effects on banks and neighborhoods and these neighborhoods also gain social benefits from the availability of credit which increase the quality of life in these areas. The article identifies the economic issues associated with providing access to credit in low and middle-income areas. Many of these problems are caused by the information asymmetry between lenders and borrowers because lenders do not realize the positive social benefits of the availability of credit in these areas. It contends that the ambiguous language of …

Situating Thinking Like A Lawyer Within Legal Pedagogy , David T. Butleritchie Jan 2002

Situating Thinking Like A Lawyer Within Legal Pedagogy , David T. Butleritchie

Cleveland State Law Review

The phrase "thinking like a lawyer" maintains as much relevance to today's legal academy as it ever has. In the face of recent criticism that the ideas connected with the concept of "thinking like a lawyer," e.g., the case law method with its focus on the adversarial litigation process, the fact is that legal educators must still teach their students to "think like lawyers." Critics have complained that the narrow focus of this traditional concept unduly restricts the ability of law students to develop refined analytical and practical skills which go beyond the adversarial context. In one sense these critics …

Demand-Based Configuration Of Modular Product Architecture, Benoit George Gauthier Jr. Jan 2002

Demand-Based Configuration Of Modular Product Architecture, Benoit George Gauthier Jr.

Open Access Dissertations

A framework is presented for development of appropriately partitioned modular product architectures tailored both to market variance and to production economics. Beginning with a market assessment, product attribute requirements are arrayed to illustrate and derive priority ratings based on commonality and diversity in demand, and potential revenue from the respective clients. Market attribute information is converted to product specifications using existing methods in quality function deployment, with restrictions in areas of concern with this method, including the need for improved fidelity of product representation, and the validity of additive contribution of design parameters to satisfy design requirements. Candidate product architecture …

Container Transportation Service Demand Simulation Model For United States Coastal Container Ports, Meifeng Luo Jan 2002

Container Transportation Service Demand Simulation Model For United States Coastal Container Ports, Meifeng Luo

Open Access Dissertations

Investment in container ports and associated multimodal facilities raise difficult economic issues and present major societal challenges. Attempts to resolve these issues require development of new methods and extensions of existing approaches drawing upon advances in simulation techniques and their integration with economic theory. Demand for container port services is a critical factor for the economic analysis of, and decision making for, container port development. However, practical methods for demand estimation often are not convincing, while formal research in transportation demand estimation has not been extended to the practical use of container port demand estimation. This dissertation designed, developed, and …

High-Stakes Tests Require High-Stakes Pedagogy, Randy Lattimore Jan 2002

High-Stakes Tests Require High-Stakes Pedagogy, Randy Lattimore

Trotter Review

High-stakes mathematics tests continue to gain popularity in the United States, with an increasing number of states setting the passing of such tests as a high school graduation requirement. Consequently, instruction and instructional content have changed, with teachers emphasizing materials on the test while neglecting other important aspects of learning. The tests have become all-consuming, taking over many students' lives. Yet students are often ill prepared for these tests. This is even more true for African-American students whose cultural and social circumstances make their preparation for high-stakes tests inadequate and ineffective. The author examines six such students - their hopes …
