Basal Conditions And Glacier Motion During The Winter/Spring Transition, Worthington Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A., Joel T. Harper, Neil Humphrey, Mark C. Greenwood

Geosciences Faculty Publications

Observations of the motion and basal conditions of Worthington Glacier, Alaska, U.S.A., during late-winter and spring melt seasons revealed no evidence of a relationship between water pressure and sliding velocity. Measurements included borehole water levels (used as a proxy for basal water pressure), surface velocity, englacial deformation, sliding velocity, and time-lapse videography of subglacial water flow and bed characteristics. The boreholes were spaced 10-15 m apart; six were instrumented in 1997, and five in 1998. In late winter, the water-pressure field showed spatially synchronous fluctuations with a diurnal cycle. The glacier's motion was relatively slow and non-cyclic. In spring, the …

An Investigation Into Traits Common To Structured Ministers And Traits Common To Musical Ministers, Matthew Cullum

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examines behaviors and preferences that are characteristic of different positions of service inside a nonprofit church organization. Interviews with incumbents in the Structural Ministry and the Musical Ministry involved with the churches of Christ in Nashville, Tennessee, were conducted to identify traits and behaviors common to these distinct groups. The traits and behaviors identified in these interviews were then used to predict college students' future membership into these positions. The NEO-FFI (Costa & McCrae, 1992) was also administered in order to assess the incremental value of a professionally developed instrument. The instrument successfully identified group membership, although some …

Determination Of Magnetic Exchange Stiffness And Surface Anisotropy Constants In Epitaxial Ni_ {1-X} Co_ {X}(001) Films, P. Talagala, Petru S. Fodor, Haddad R. Naik, Lowell E. Wenger, P. P. Vaishnava, V. M. Naik Jan 2002

Determination Of Magnetic Exchange Stiffness And Surface Anisotropy Constants In Epitaxial Ni_ {1-X} Co_ {X}(001) Films, P. Talagala, Petru S. Fodor, Haddad R. Naik, Lowell E. Wenger, P. P. Vaishnava, V. M. Naik

Physics Faculty Publications

Magnetic characteristics of epitaxial Ni1-xCox(001) (x=0, 0.16, and 0.50) films with nominal 200 nm thickness on Cu(001)/Si(100) substrates have been investigated by magnetization and ferromagnetic resonance measurements in order to better clarify the rationale for the large variation in the magnetic exchange stiffness constant A, previously determined from different measurements. The exchange constant as well as the saturation magnetization, effective demagnetizing field, fourth-order magnetocrystalline, and second-order perpendicular uniaxial magnetic anisotropy fields has been determined. The analyses of low-temperature saturation magnetization data on these films yield A values that increase from 0.82×10-6erg/cm for a pure Ni film to 2.27×10-6erg/cm for the …

Progress With Optically Pumped Sources Of Polarized Electrons, Mark A. Rosenberry, Herman Batelaan, J. P. Reyes, Timothy J. Gay

Timothy J. Gay Publications

We report our work in developing new "turn-key" sources of polarized electrons. These sources operate by extracting the electrons from a discharge and polarizing them through optical pumping. Preliminary work demonstrates that beams of 4 μA with greater than 20% polarization are possible. Such devices could enormously simplify the running of many experiments in the fields of atomic structure, magnetic materials and biophysics.

Group Properties Of Crossover And Mutation, Jonathan E. Rowe, Michael D. Vose, Alden H. Wright Jan 2002

Group Properties Of Crossover And Mutation, Jonathan E. Rowe, Michael D. Vose, Alden H. Wright

Computer Science Faculty Publications

It is supposed that the finite search space Ω has certain symmetries that can be described in terms of a group of permutations acting upon it. If crossover and mutation respect these symmetries, then these operators can be described in terms of a mixing matrix and a group of permutation matrices. Conditions under which certain subsets of Ω are invariant under crossover are investigated, leading to a generalization of the term schema. Finally, it is sometimes possible for the group acting on Ω to induce a group structure on Ω itself.

An Investigation Of Preservice Elementary Teachers' Thinking About Science, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving Jan 2002

An Investigation Of Preservice Elementary Teachers' Thinking About Science, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

It is not common to find media reports on the failures of science education; nor uncommon to hear prestigious scientists publicly lament the rise of anti-science attitudes. Given the position elementary teachers have in influencing children, anti-science sentiment amongst them would be a significant concern. Hence, this article reports an investigation where preservice elementary teachers responded to the Thinking about Science survey instrument. This newly developed instrument addresses the broad relationship of science to nine important areas of society and culture and is intended to reveal the extent of views being consistent with or disagreeing with a commonly held worldview …

Culturally Important Issues And Science: A Gender And Science-Interest Investigation, William W. Cobern, Cathleen C. Loving

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

Elementary science methods students nearing completion of their preservice teacher preparation are an important source for gauging views about science and its relation to culture. This research investigates gender and science interest as correlates of the valuation of science vis-à-vis nine culturally important categories as measured by the Thinking About Science Survey. Over one thousand male and female students at a large midwestern university took part in this study.

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland Jan 2002

Cattle Cycles, Expectations, And The Age Distribution Of Capital, David Aadland

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper builds a dynamic forward-looking model describing the approximate ten-year cattle cycle. The theoretical model improves on existing models by (1) allowing cow-calf operators to make investment decisions on both the cow and calf margins, (2) formally recognizing the age distribution of the capital stock, and (3) considering a mixed scheme of rational and naive expectations. The model.is then calibrated and used to simulate artificial data that endogenously generates ten-year cycles in the total stock of cattle.

Household Expenditure Patterns For Carbohydrate Sources In Russia, Rimma Shiptsova, Rodney B. Holcomb, H. L. Goodwin, Jr.

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This study provides a unique view of the demand for carbohydrate sources in Russia at the household level. The data used in this analysis was obtained from a 1996 survey in eight Russian metropolitan areas. An AIDS model is used to examine the expenditures for potatoes, bread, flour, rice, and pasta. The impacts of household demographic factors on the consumption of carbohydrates are also discussed.

Cheap Talk Reconsidered: New Evidence From Cvm, David Aadland, Arthur J. Caplan Jan 2002

Cheap Talk Reconsidered: New Evidence From Cvm, David Aadland, Arthur J. Caplan

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

Two recent studies have shown that "cheap talk" is an effective means of eliminating positive hypothetical bias in experimental and field-auction settings. We further investigate the ability of cheap talk to mitigate positive hypothetical bias in a CVM phone survey administered to over 4,000 households. Positive hypothetical bias is first detected in our data by contrasting revealed and stated preference information. However, a short, neutral cheap-talk script appears to exacerbate rather than mitigate the bias. Based on this and mixed evidence from earlier studies, we suggest caution in using cheap talk as an ex ante control for hypothetical bias.

An Adaptive, Kink-Based Approach To Path Integral Calculations, Randal W. Hall Jan 2002

An Adaptive, Kink-Based Approach To Path Integral Calculations, Randal W. Hall

Collected Faculty Scholarship

A kink-based expression for the canonical partition function is developed using Feynman’s path integral formulation of quantum mechanics and a discrete basis set. The approach is exact for a complete set of states. The method is tested on the 3×3 Hubbard model and overcomes the sign problem seen in traditional path integral studies of fermion systems. Kinks correspond to transitions between different N-electron states, much in the same manner as occurs in configuration interaction calculations in standard ab initio methods. The different N-electron states are updated, based on which states occur frequently during a Monte Carlo simulation, giving better estimates …

Recent Applications Of Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry To Environmental Measurements, Michael A. Janusa Jan 2002

Recent Applications Of Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry To Environmental Measurements, Michael A. Janusa

Faculty Publications

Atomic absorption spectroscopy is very useful for the determination of a large number of elements, especially at trace levels. It is a widely used technique for analysis of a wide variety of sample matrices including biota, soils, and water. Atomic absorption spectroscopy is a very reputable technique that is inexpensive and delivers accurate results even in a complex matrix. This review focuses on the applications of flame atomic absorption spectroscopy to environmental measurements, and is mainly based on papers published from 1999–2002.

Soil Leachate Responses During 10 Years Of Induced Whole-Watershed Acidification, Pamela J. Edwards, James N. Kochenderfer, Dean W. Coble, Mary Beth Adams

Faculty Publications

Soil solution was collected from zero-tension lysimeters for 10 yr on two small central Appalachian watersheds in West Virginia, U.S.A. Ammonium sulfate fertilizer was applied to one catchment 3 times per year during each year. The other watershed was used as a reference to account for ambient baseline conditions. Ca and Mg concentrations collected below the A- and B-horizons of the treated watershed increased and then decreased over time as a result of the treatment. By contrast, Ca and Mg concentrations in the C-horizon continued to increase throughout the study period.

Financial Maturity Concepts With Application To Three Hardwood Timber Stands, Steven H. Bullard, D. L. Grebner, K. L. Belli

Faculty Publications

Timber is “financially mature” when its rate of value increase falls below what the landowner can earn in alternative investments that are comparable in duration, risk, liquidity, and other factors. The basic concept of financial maturity is simple, but in application it involves several very important, basic questions and issues.

Temporal Variation In Community Composition, Pigmentation, And Fv/Fm Of Desert Cyanobacterial Soil Crusts, M. A. Bowker, S. C. Reed, J. Belnap, S. L. Phillips Jan 2002

Temporal Variation In Community Composition, Pigmentation, And Fv/Fm Of Desert Cyanobacterial Soil Crusts, M. A. Bowker, S. C. Reed, J. Belnap, S. L. Phillips

Canyonlands Research Bibliography

Summers on the Colorado Plateau (USA) are typified by harsh conditions such as high temperatures, brief soil hydration periods, and high UV and visible radiation. We investigated whether community composition, physiological status, and pigmentation might vary in biological soil crusts as a result of such conditions. Representative surface cores were sampled at the ENE, WSW, and top microaspects of 20 individual soil crust pedicels at a single site in Canyonlands National Park, Utah, in spring and fall of 1999. Frequency of cyanobacterial taxa, pigment concentrations, and dark adapted quantum yield (Fv/Fm) were measured for each core. The frequency of major …

Digital Divide: Myth, Reality, Responsibility, Nicholas W. Allard

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The author explores the fundamental benefits of eliminating the digital divide. Improving access to technology is both a positive thing with respect to social conscience, but it is an imperative of democracy, as well as making fundamentally good, hardheaded economic sense. John Nash's game theory applies, expounding the benefits of selfish self-interest for individuals, for social groups and for society as a whole.

Potential Effects Of Oil And Gas Development On Mule Deer And Pronghorn Populations In Western Wyoming, Hall Sawyer, Fred Lindzey, Doug Mcwhirter, Keith Andrews Jan 2002

Potential Effects Of Oil And Gas Development On Mule Deer And Pronghorn Populations In Western Wyoming, Hall Sawyer, Fred Lindzey, Doug Mcwhirter, Keith Andrews

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

Western Wyoming is home to the largest, most diverse ungulate populations in the Rocky Mountain region. Maintenance of these populations and protection of their habitats is a primary concern among public and private sectors. While urban expansion, habitat loss, disease and changes in vegetation contribute to management concerns, extensive energy development is thought to pose the most serious threat to mule deer and pronghorn populations. Southwestern Wyoming is rich with oil and gas resources and has consistently produced 10 million barrels of oil each year, with gas production increasing steadily since the early 1980s. A five-county area (Sweetwater, Carbon, Sublette, …

Mammals Of The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument: A Literature And Museum Survey, Jerran T. Flinders, Duke S. Rogers, Jackee L. Webber-Alston, Harry A. Barber

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

This is the first treatment of the mammals of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GSENM). GSENM was established in 1996 as a 1.7-million-acre (680,000-ha) federal land reserve under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). To successfully manage this new monument, the BLM is presently developing a management action plan. To provide information for the proper management of mammal species of the area, we have reviewed background literature for each mammal potentially found within the Monument boundaries. We propose that a core area, surrounded by a buffer matrix, be used in GSENM and surrounding public lands to preserve …
