We present a novel method for extracting the energy spectrum of ultracold neutrons from magnetically induced spin depolarization measurements using the n2EDM apparatus. This method is also used to exploit sensitivity to the storage properties of the materials used to trap ultracold neutrons, specifically, whether collisions are specular or diffuse. To do so, we utilize tomat simulation to map storage properties to correlation times of the ultracold neutrons to induced magnetic nonuniformities. We highlight the sensitivity of this new technique by comparing the two different storage chambers of the n2EDM experiment, which host different ultracold neutron energy spectra. This method …

Imaging And Non-Imaging Approaches For The Diagnosis And Monitoring Of Necrotizing Enterocolitis-What Lies Ahead?, Indrani Bhattacharjee, Catalina Le Cacheux, Eric B. Ortigoza, Jonathan Dillman, Sherwin S. Chan, Alain Cuna

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) remains one of the most serious gastrointestinal emergencies in preterm infants, and imaging plays a central role in diagnosis and clinical management. Historically, evaluation has relied primarily on abdominal radiography, which remains widely available and embedded in established diagnostic frameworks. However, the hallmark radiographic signs of NEC (i.e., pneumatosis intestinalis, portal venous gas, and free air) reflect relatively advanced manifestations of intestinal injury that indicate established mucosal disruption or transmural necrosis. Bowel ultrasound has increasingly complemented radiography by enabling real-time assessment of bowel wall integrity, perfusion, motility, and intra-abdominal fluid, providing physiologic information that may refine clinical …

Quantitatively Hyper-Positive Real Rational Functions Iii, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz Jun 2026

Quantitatively Hyper-Positive Real Rational Functions Iii, Daniel Alpay, Izchak Lewkowicz

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Hyper-Positive Real, matrix-valued, rational functions are associated with absolute stability (the Lurie problem). Here, quantitative subsets of Hyper-positive functions, related through nested inclusions, are introduced. Structurally, this family of functions turns out to be matrix-convex and closed under inversion. A state-space characterization of these functions through a corresponding Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov Lemma, is given. Technically, the classical Linear Matrix Inclusions, associated with passive systems, are here substituted by Quadratic Matrix Inclusions.

Implementation Of A Mixed Precision Iterative Solver On An Amd Apu, Saeyeon Kim, Henrik Evers Jun 2026

Implementation Of A Mixed Precision Iterative Solver On An Amd Apu, Saeyeon Kim, Henrik Evers

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

Solving systems of linear equations is a core operation in high-performance computing and many scientific and engineering applications. One of the most widely used direct methods for solving such systems is LU factorization. Mixed-precision methods accelerate these solvers by using low-precision LU factorization with iterative refinement, improving performance and energy efficiency while preserving high numerical accuracy. AMD Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), which integrate CPU and NPU resources, provide an opportunity to explore this approach on emerging heterogeneous architectures. However, effective NPU utilization remains challenging due to workload partitioning, buffer management, data-movement overhead, and software tooling limitations.

This project implements a …

Detectability Of Polarized Γ-Ray Emission From Blazar Flares With Cosi, Garrett A. Latiolais, Jorge Otero-Santos, Michela Negro, Lea Marcotulli, Mohammad Ali Boroumand, Savitri Gallego, Tiffany Lewis, Et Al.

Michigan Tech Publications

We investigate the detectability of polarized γ-ray emission from blazar flares with the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI). Using 17 yr of Fermi Large Area Telescope observations, we analyze light curves for 1413 blazars and identify a maximum of 787 sources with flaring episodes through Bayesian block analysis. For each flare, we estimate the minimum detectable polarization (MDP99%) in the COSI energy band (0.2–5 MeV) using instrument response functions under a range of spectral assumptions and background conditions. Under baseline background levels (1 count s−1) and assuming that blazar flare statistics in the MeV band are comparable to …

A Protestant Response To The Pope’S Magnifica Humanitas On Ai, Derek Schuurman

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Pope Leo XIV released his first papal encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, on May 25, a roughly 42,000-word document outlining a Catholic response to recent developments in AI. I had been eagerly anticipating this encyclical and spent much of the release day poring over the text. While there have been other Christian efforts to release statements about AI, this is the first comprehensive statement from the Catholic Church. What follows is a summary of the document, followed by my own response.

Chatgpt, Where Should I Go? A Qualitative Exploration Of How Large Language Models Are Experienced As Support For Travel Planning, Mohammad Amin Kuhail, Asbjørn Følstad, Saifeddin Alimamy

All Works

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for travel planning. Yet, little is known about how travellers experience and interact with such language models. This qualitative study explores how users employ LLMs to plan trips, drawing on the hedonic/pragmatic model of user experience to examine functional and affective dimensions. We collected data from 104 participants with prior experience using LLMs for travel advice through open-ended questionnaire responses. Thematic analysis revealed three key insights: (1) users value the pragmatic benefits of LLMs, such as efficiency, clarity, and confidence in decision-making, while also appreciating hedonic qualities, including inspiration, enjoyment, and authenticity; (2) …

A Machine Learning Framework For Contractor Scope Matching Using Profile Characteristics And Work Package Vector Similarity, Pedro Fonseca, Sergei Chuprov Jun 2026

A Machine Learning Framework For Contractor Scope Matching Using Profile Characteristics And Work Package Vector Similarity, Pedro Fonseca, Sergei Chuprov

Computer Science Faculty Publications

This paper presents a machine learning-based framework for predicting contractor performance in the construction industry by integrating contractor profile information with work package characteristics. The proposed approach addresses procurement challenges arising from the misalignment between contractor expertise and assigned scopes, a key contributor to cost overruns and schedule delays. Unlike existing models that rely on aggregated project-level indicators, the framework enables scope-aware performance prediction by leveraging the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to capture similarity among work packages. Contractor profiles are encoded using historical performance data, while WBS elements are vectorized to quantify scope similarity and contextualize predictions. Experimental results demonstrate …

Matching Two Long Interferometric Pathlengths Using Low Temporal Coherence Light For Finding Hong–Ou–Mandel Dip, Keith A. Wyman, Noah S. Everett, Anil K. Patnaik

Faculty Publications

Hong–Ou–Mandel (HOM) dip from a biphoton source in a two-photon interferometer provides a myriad of quantum tools for quantum communication and sensing. But the stringent requirements for spatial coherence between the photon pair makes it prohibitively difficult to observe high-fidelity HOM dip in long-distance free-space implementations, e.g., for the photon pairs involved in quantum communication need to match the two path lengths within a few 10 s of micron because of the short coherence width of the two-photon wave-packet. While many techniques for the pathlength balancing of two interferometric arms have been studied and applied extensively, such balancing is further …

Koba-Nielsen Local Zeta Functions, Convex Subsets, And Generalized Selberg-Mehta-Macdonald And Dotsenko-Fateev-Like Integrals, Willem Veys, Wilson A. Zuniga-Galindo

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

The Koba-Nielsen local zeta functions are integrals depending on several complex parameters, used to regularize the Koba-Nielsen string amplitudes. These integrals are convergent and admit meromorphic continuations in the complex parameters. In the original case, the integration is carried out on the n-dimensional Euclidean space. In this work, the integration is over a variety of (bounded or unbounded) convex subsets; the resulting integrals also admit meromorphic continuations in the complex parameters. We describe the meromorphic continuation's polar locus explicitly, using the technique of embedded resolution. This result can be reinterpreted as saying that the meromorphic continuations are weighted sums of …

Managing Ai Bot Access To Open Scholarly Infrastructures, Petr Knoth Jun 2026

Managing Ai Bot Access To Open Scholarly Infrastructures, Petr Knoth

FORCE 2026

The rapid rise of generative AI has created unprecedented demand for large, high-quality research corpora. Open access repositories and other open scholarly infrastructures have therefore become primary sources for AI bots, because they host research that is not universally reliable, but remains far more evidence-based than most web content. This is both an opportunity and a strain: repositories are now more valuable than ever, but machine traffic brings sustainability, capacity and policy challenges. Repositories may be able to scale, but who should fund that scaling, and under what conditions?

The core dilemma is how to curb abusive high-load bot activity …

Beyond The Launch: Seven Years Of Sustaining An Open Educational Resource After The Grant Ends, Susan Gardner Archambault Jun 2026

Beyond The Launch: Seven Years Of Sustaining An Open Educational Resource After The Grant Ends, Susan Gardner Archambault

FORCE 2026

This presentation shares seven years of lessons from maintaining Project CORA (Community of Online Research Assignments), an award-winning, open-access platform where librarians and educators share adaptable information literacy assignments. Launched in 2016 with grant support and strong community engagement, CORA saw early success: international page views across 150+ countries, 200+ shared assignments and teaching resources, and community-building features like "adapt this assignment" and leaderboards.

But when funding ended in 2018, Project CORA entered what many open projects experience but few discuss publicly: the precarious post-grant phase, when initial funding and enthusiasm fade but infrastructure still needs support. Annual contributions dropped …

Ab-Initio Investigation Of 2d Materials For Voc-Based Cancer Biomarker Detection And Hydrogen Storage Application, Ibrahim J.M. Alghoul

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

This dissertation is motivated by two driving forces:
(i) the need for biosensors for early cancer diagnosis, and
(ii) the need for hydrogen storage materials to support a future energy hydrogen-based economy.
Throughout this thesis, both challenges were addressed using computational methods based upon density functional theory (DFT), as implemented in the Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP), ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD), and thermodynamic analysis.

On the side of cancer biomarker detection, exhaled breath containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been shown to offer the analysis of a promising non-invasive diagnostic strategy. This thesis explored the functionalization of two distinct 2D …

[Birds-Of-A-Feather] Understanding And Handling Software Plagiarism In The Age Of Generative Ai, Daniel S. Katz, Scott C. Edmunds

FORCE 2026

Computing and software have supported research since their inception, and continue to play a significant role in knowledge production. However, the means of communicating research methods and results were developed long before computing existed, and the research community lacks best practices for documenting computational research elements transparently, reproducibly, and reusably.
Publishers are now more accepting of the inclusion of software (typically, source code) associated with submitted manuscripts, and many want to support processes to vouch for the integrity of software just as they do for other content, such as ensuring that ethical and legal concerns such as authorship, plagiarism, copyrights …
