Miss Snell's Way: A Life-Affirming Organic Model Created In Sport, Robin G. Cash
Miss Snell's Way: A Life-Affirming Organic Model Created In Sport, Robin G. Cash
Eleanor Frost Snell Programs, Correspondence and Other Documents
This 156 page dissertation by Robin G. Cash, Ursinus College Class of 1972, was submitted to the faculty of Fielding Graduate Institute in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Human and Organizational Systems.
The dissertation explores a women’s way of coaching and being in sport that existed prior to Title IX. It considers a shift from an organic to a mechanistic coaching approach. An alternative model based on the concept of organicism and underlying principles of relational power, life-affirming actions, and inclusiveness of all beings is presented. This new model emerged from three …

Self -Perception Of Competence And Its Relationship To The Academic Achievement Of Students Attending Middle School, Louis Jr. Cavallo
Self -Perception Of Competence And Its Relationship To The Academic Achievement Of Students Attending Middle School, Louis Jr. Cavallo
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1982, the National Middle School Association published This We Believe, which outlines the general characteristics of developmentally responsive middle schools. The characteristics include interdisciplinary teaching teams, advisory programs, exploratory courses, and expanded extracurricular programs (NMSA, 1982). These middle school components that address affective characteristics were developed, in part, to ensure that adolescents attending middle school are provided with the opportunity to have positive interpersonal relations with an adult advisor, a smaller learning community within the larger school, and opportunities to develop positive peer relations. While developmentally responsive middle schools have an emphasis on the affective characteristics of adolescent development, …

Brown Treesnake Control: Ecomony Of Scales, Daniel S. Vice, Mikel E. Pitzler
Brown Treesnake Control: Ecomony Of Scales, Daniel S. Vice, Mikel E. Pitzler
Human Conflicts with Wildlife: 2002 Symposium
The accidental introduction of the brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis) to Guam led to the demise of most of the island’s native avifauna and herpetofauna. The snake is also responsible for significant economic losses through frequent power outages and consumption of poultry. Control of the snake, aimed at preventing its inadvertent dispersal from the island and protecting native wildlife and economic resources, is accomplished using specially designed snake traps, hand capture, snake detector dogs, and snake barriers. Although control tools capture large numbers of snakes, control efforts are labor intensive, costly, and ineffective in reducing snake populations across the …

United States Department of Energy: Publications
The reduction kinetics of Fe(III)citrate, Fe(III)NTA, Co(III)EDTA−, U(VI)O22+, Cr(VI)O42−, and Tc(VII)O4− were studied in cultures of dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria (DMRB): Shewanella alga strain BrY, Shewanella putrefaciens strain CN32, Shewanella oneidensis strain MR-1, and Geobacter metallireducens strain GS-15. Reduction rates were metal specific with the following rate trend: Fe (III)citrate ≥ Fe(III)NTA > Co(III)EDTA− ›› UO2 2+ > CrO42− > TcO4−, except for CrO42− when H2 was used as electron donor. The metal reduction rates were also electron donor dependent with faster rates …

Synoptic Assessment Of Wetland Function: A Planning Tool For Protection Of Wetland Species Biodiversity, E. William Schweiger, Scott Leibowitz, Jeffrey Hyman, Walt E. Foster, Marla C. Downing
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
We present a synoptic assessment intended to maximize the benefits to wetland species biodiversity gained through Clean Water Act regulatory efforts within 225 sub-basins in Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas (US Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7), USA. Our assessment provides a method for prioritizing sub-basins potentially critical for supporting wetland species biodiversity and may assist environmental managers and conservationists constrained by limited resources. We prioritize sub-basins based on the projected increase in the risk of wetland species extirpation across Region 7 that would be avoided by applying a unit of regulatory protection effort within a sub-basin. Because the projected increase …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
Receptor models infer contributions from particulate matter (PM) source types using multivariate measurements of particle chemical and physical properties. Receptor models complement source models that estimate concentrations from emissions inventories and transport meteorology. Enrichment factor, chemical mass balance, multiple linear regression, eigenvector, edge detection, neural network, aerosol evolution, and aerosol equilibrium models have all been used to solve particulate air quality problems, and more than 500 citations of their theory and application document these uses. While elements, ions, and carbons were often used to apportion TSP, PM10, and PM2.5 among many source types, many of these components …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Gray whales are coastal migratory baleen whales that are benthic feeders. Most of their feeding takes place in the northern Pacific Ocean with opportunistic feeding taking place during their migrations and residence on the breeding grounds. The concentrations of organochlorines and trace elements were determined in tissues and stomach contents of juvenile gray whales that were taken on their Arctic feeding grounds in the western Bering Sea during a Russian subsistence harvest. These concentrations were compared to previously published data for contaminants in gray whales that stranded along the west coast of the US during their northbound migration. Feeding in …

Herein, we document changes in the Lake Michigan food web between 1970 and 2000 and identify the factors responsible for these changes. Control of sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) and alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) populations in Lake Michigan, beginning in the 1950s and 1960s, had profound effects on the food web. Recoveries of lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) and burbot (Lota lota) populations, as well as the buildup of salmonine populations, were attributable, at least in part, to sea lamprey control. Based on our analyses, predation by salmonines was primarily responsible for the reduction in …

We describe, explain, and “predict” dispersal and ecosystem impacts of six Ponto-Caspian endemic species that recently invaded the Great Lakes via ballast water. The zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha, and quagga mussel, Dreissena bugensis, continue to colonize hard and soft substrates of the Great Lakes and are changing ecosystem function through mechanisms of ecosystem engineering (increased water clarity and reef building), fouling native mussels, high particle filtration rate with selective rejection of colonial cyanobacteria in pseudofeces, alteration of nutrient ratios, and facilitation of the rapid spread of their Ponto-Caspian associates, the benthic amphipod Echinogammarus ischnus and the round goby, …

Vocs, Pesticides, Nitrate, And Their Mixtures In Groundwater Used For Drinking Water In The United States, Paul Squillace, Jonathon Scott, Michael Moran, B. T. Nolan, Dana Kolpin
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Samples of untreated groundwater from 1255 domestic drinking-water wells and 242 public supply wells were analyzed as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment Program of the U.S. Geological Survey between 1992 and 1999. Wells were sampled to define the regional quality of the groundwater resource and, thus, were distributed geographically across large aquifers, primarily in rural areas. For each sample, as many as 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 83 pesticides, and nitrate were analyzed. On the basis of previous studies, nitrate concentrations as nitrogen ≥3 mg/L were considered to have an anthropogenic origin. VOCs were detected more frequently (44%) than …

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
To provide the first nationwide reconnaissance of the occurrence of pharmaceuticals, hormones, and other organic wastewater contaminants (OWCs) in water resources, the U.S. Geological Survey used five newly developed analytical methods to measure concentrations of 95 OWCs in water samples from a network of 139 streams across 30 states during 1999 and 2000. The selection of sampling sites was biased toward streams susceptible to contamination (i.e. downstream of intense urbanization and livestock production). OWCs were prevalent during this study, being found in 80% of the streams sampled. The compounds detected represent a wide range of residential, industrial, and agricultural origins …

Depositional History And Neotectonics In Great Salt Lake, Utah, From High-Resolution Seismic Stratigraphy, Steven M. Colman, Kerry R. Kelts, David A. Dinter
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
High-resolution seismic-reflection data from Great Salt Lake show that the basinal sediment sequence is cut by numerous faults with N–S and NE–SW orientations. This faulting shows evidence of varied timing and relative offsets, but includes at least three events totaling about 12 m following the Bonneville phase of the lake (since about 13.5 ka). Several faults displace the uppermost sediments and the lake floor. Bioherm structures are present above some faults, which suggests that the faults served as conduits for sublacustrine discharge of fresh water. A shallow, fault-controlled ridge between Carrington Island and Promontory Point, underlain by a well-cemented pavement, …

Review Of The Background And Application Of Triolein-Containing Semipermeable Membrane Devices In Aquatic Environmental Study, Yibing Lu, Zijian Wang, James Huckins
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
This paper briefly reviews research on passive in situ samplers for aquatic environments but focuses on the development and application of the triolein-containing semipermeable membrane device in aquatic environmental monitoring. Special attention is paid to the calibration of the devices, quality control issues, and its potential uses in environmental assessments of aquatic contaminants. Also, the suitability of the technique for incorporation with selected bioassays is examined.

In current extremely high density recording media design, the signal to noise ratio SNR is related to the number of magnetic grains N in a recording bit by
SNR = 10 logl0 N .................................... (1)
In earlier studies we have found that a metallurgical grain can act as a magnetic grain when grains are magnetically decoupled by a non-magnetic phase [1,2]. Alternatively, several metallurgical grains can be exchange-coupled together when they are small [3]. An ideal morphology is one in which the non-magnetic atoms are segregated at the grain boundaries forming the non-magnetic phase while keeping the grains closely …

A formal multipole expansion of tensor functions dependent on several vector parameters is obtained in an invariant differential form. We apply this result to derive multipole expansions of finite rotation matrices in terms of finite sums of bipolar harmonics. The multipole expansion in terms of bipolar harmonics of unit vectors r1 and r2 are analyzed for functions of the type f (r)Ylm( r) (with r = r1 − r2), which are important in two-center problems. As another example of the application of the multipole expansion technique, reduction formulae are obtained for tensor constructions …

Wood Thrush Movements And Habitat Use: Effects Of Forest Management For Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, Jason Lang, Larkin A. Powell, David Krementz, Michael J. Conroy
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
We monitored adult and juvenile breeding-season movements and habitat use of radio-tagged Wood Thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina) at the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, central Georgia, USA. We investigated the effects that management for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis), thinning and burning >30 year old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) habitat, had on Wood Thrushes, a ground-foraging and midstory-nesting species. Adult Wood Thrush pairs regularly moved long distances between nesting attempts (range 1 to 17,388 m). The only experimental effect we found on adult movements was a decrease in weekly emigration rates (AP) from thinned and burned compartments …

Defects in the band gap of CuIn1-xGaxSe2 have been characterized using transient photocapacitance spectroscopy. The measured spectra clearly show response from a band of defects centered around 0.8 eV from the valence band edge as well as an exponential distribution of band tail states. Despite Ga contents ranging from Ga/(In+Ga)=0.0 to 0.8, the defect bandwidth and its position relative to the valence band remain constant. This defect band may act as an important recombination center, contributing to the decrease in device efficiency with increasing Ga content.
