Systematic Methods For The Design Of A Class Of Fuzzy Logic Controllers, Saad Y. Yasin Apr 2002

Systematic Methods For The Design Of A Class Of Fuzzy Logic Controllers, Saad Y. Yasin

Dissertations

Fuzzy logic control, a relatively new branch of control, can be used effectively whenever conventional control techniques become inapplicable or impractical. Various attempts have been made to create a generalized fuzzy control system and to formulate an analytically based fuzzy control law. In this study, two methods, the left and right parameterization method and the normalized spline-base membership function method, were utilized for formulating analytical fuzzy control laws in important practical control applications. The first model was used to design an idle speed controller, while the second was used to control an inverted control problem. The results of both showed …

Non-Classical Level Control Of The Utc Distillation Column, Mevan Ranasinghe Apr 2002

Non-Classical Level Control Of The Utc Distillation Column, Mevan Ranasinghe

Honors Theses

This paper researches the enhancement of accuracy for level control for an operational distillation column. This was achieved through an analysis of both controller and sensor components. The UTC distillation column reboiler level control, like any control system, has multiple sources of error resulting in increased imprecision and inaccuracy. Several fundamental inaccuracies in processing of data were identified and then minimized by the introduction of a non-linear mathematical model prior to any actual controller development. This provides more accurate level measurement and a base for developing accurate controllers. In exploring the effectiveness of alternative controllers, two non-classical controllers are considered in …

Making Sense Of Matter In Deleuze's Conception Of Cinema Language, Roger Dawkins Apr 2002

Making Sense Of Matter In Deleuze's Conception Of Cinema Language, Roger Dawkins

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Writing in the 1960s and early 1970s, Christian Metz's work on the cinema favoured systematic exactitude, and was concerned with uprooting film theory from what he saw as the generalized approach of the early twentieth century (Andrews 213). Metz thought that a more scientific approach to the cinema was to be found with the question of language, and although this question was metaphorically present since the 1920s [1], Metz was the first to apply modern linguistic models to this problem (Guzzetti 292). What resulted was a methodology of analysis based on the formalism inherent to …

Rethinking The Great Divide : A Rhetorical Study Of Orality, Literacy And The Human Experience, Danielle L. Joyce Apr 2002

Rethinking The Great Divide : A Rhetorical Study Of Orality, Literacy And The Human Experience, Danielle L. Joyce

Honors Theses

Our technologizing of the world has not only drastically been changing the way we live, work, and play but also the rhetoric that we employ within it to communicate with one another. "Cyberspace" and "virtual reality" have become commonplace descriptors of social forms where people do not have to live, meet, or work face-to-face in order to develop or maintain significant social relationships (Gackenbach, 227). We no longer only meet "in person" for important discussions or send hand written letters to loved-ones for reception weeks later. Instead, today, we talk into cameras attached to telephones to close multi-million dollar business …

Reconceptualizing Professional Responsibility: Incorporating Equality, Rosemary Cairns Way Apr 2002

Reconceptualizing Professional Responsibility: Incorporating Equality, Rosemary Cairns Way

Dalhousie Law Journal

Are legal professionals concerned with "doing good" or just with "doing well" financially? In an age of increasing and intensifying public scrutiny there is a need to examine and challenge the legal profession's conception of professional responsibility, and how it translates into practice. This paper expresses the concern that the profession has moved too far in the direction of a "billable hours" culture, a culture that is falling short of the legal profession's obligation as a self-regulated entity to consider and acknowledge the public interest at all points. The author calls for a broader conception of professionalism, one that encompasses …

The Bill Of Rights And The Emerging Democracies, Jacek Kurczewski, Barry Sullivan

Law and Contemporary Problems

Today, the influence of the US Bill of Rights can be traced through its remote offspring, including the Helsinki Agreement, the German Basic Law, the post-war French constitutions, and the European Convention on Human Rights. These documents have influenced recent developments in the emerging democracies of eastern and central Europe.

Defining And Achieving Decisive Victory, Colin S. Gray Dr. Apr 2002

Defining And Achieving Decisive Victory, Colin S. Gray Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author explores the concept of victory in the war in terrorism, but he does so by placing it within the larger currents of change that are sweeping the global security environment. He contends that the time-tested idea of decisive victory is still an important one, but must be designed very carefully in this dangerous new world. To do so correctly can provide the foundation for an effective strategy. To fail to do so could be the first step toward strategic defeat.

Hegemony: Methods And Hypotheses, Rares Piloiu Apr 2002

Hegemony: Methods And Hypotheses, Rares Piloiu

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Recent political thought from the left has re-awoken the interest in Gramscian theory. Even if, pace Louis Althusser or, in America, Michel Foucault, Antonio Gramsci's syntax of ideology as an integral form of relation between individual and society has been quite popular in cultural studies, the notion of hegemony has not enjoyed the same repute. It is therefore Ernesto Laclau's merit to have reintroduced the term in contemporary debates concerning problems of political power, authority, cultural policy and ideology. Hailing from a reinvented Marxist perspective (one that had to account, among others, for the failures of actual existing …

After "Hiding The Ball" Is Over: How The Nlrb Must Change Its Approach To Decision-Making, Michael Hayes Apr 2002

After "Hiding The Ball" Is Over: How The Nlrb Must Change Its Approach To Decision-Making, Michael Hayes

All Faculty Scholarship

Is the National Labor Relations Board (the NLRB or the Board), the agency that oversees federal labor law, still relevant? When this question is considered, as it frequently is by scholars, lawyers and officials of the NLRB itself, the focus typically is on whether changes in the workplace, the economy and society are diminishing the relevance of the Board. But there is a new and more immediate threat to the relevance of the Board that so far has been mostly ignored - that the Board is in danger of being rendered a superfluous legal institution in the scheme of American …

Letters Of Comfort Revisited, Pey Woan Lee Apr 2002

Letters Of Comfort Revisited, Pey Woan Lee

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Since the English Court of Appeal’s decision in Kleinwort Benson Ltd v. Malaysia Mining Corp. Bhd, it would be understandable if the business community placed little or no reliance on letters of comfort save in the exceptional case where the terms evince an undeniably clear intention to create binding obligations. It might therefore seem somewhat surprising that an experienced and sophisticated institution should commence proceedings in the High Court of Singapore on the premise of a letter of awareness in Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd v. Jurong Engineering Ltd. This could plausibly be explained as the bank’s last-ditch attempt …

Litoral: A New Form Of Defamation Consciousness, Kim Von Arx Apr 2002

Litoral: A New Form Of Defamation Consciousness, Kim Von Arx

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

With the Internet, quickly becoming ubiquitous, the question arises: how does the Internet, and more specifi- cally computer-mediated-communication (CMC), affect people’s lives?

This paper will explore CMC in the Western world as an instance of Walter J. Ong’s notion of secondary orality. It will seek to determine whether the proposed shift in communicative and social consciousness elimi- nates the need for the common law distinction between libel and slander in the online communication environ- ment. The paper is divided into three parts. In the first section, the elements of primary orality and the shift of consciousness from a primary oral …

A Review Of The Literature On Bilingual Education, Lorna Rivera

Gastón Institute Publications

Changes in bilingual education will have an important impact on the future well-being of the growing Latino community in Massachusetts. This report summarizes some of the major research findings regarding the purposes and effectiveness of bilingual education. Questions that will be addressed include: What are the existing bilingual education models? Which bilingual education models work best? Should there be time limits for bilingual education? Do immigrants resist learning English? Does speaking another language interfere with learning? Should bilingual students be exempt from state-mandated testing? Are bilingual teachers qualified? Are bilingual education students more likely to dropout?

It is hoped that …

Multicultural Education In Head Start Classrooms, Cynthia Czerwin '02 Apr 2002

Multicultural Education In Head Start Classrooms, Cynthia Czerwin '02

Honors Projects

This research is used to determine whether Head Start addresses the cultural needs of its diverse clientele or if it assimilates its clients into the mainstream culture. It is based on the concept that culture affects how children learn. Culture is acquired through social interactions with parents and other social institutions. The connection of culture and learning is explained in the theories of Cooley, Mead, and Vygotsky. Cooley and Mead have two main theories of socialization; both examine how one acquires culture through social interactions. Vygotsky's theory describes how children develop cognitively. His theory is also based on social interactions.

The Spanish language has many dialects throughout the world, which vary on phonological, morphological, syntactic, and lexical levels, among others. The Argentinean national dialect of Spanish readily distinguishes itself from others primarily through: (a) the use of vos instead of tit as the 2nd person singular subject pronoun, (b) the use of the [~] and [i] phonemes instead of the peninsular standard [y], and (c) the use of lunfardo, a national form of slang originated in Buenos Aires. Not only does vos replace tit as a subject, but it also has its own series of verb conjugations, specifically in the …

In-Betweenness: Religion And Conflicting Visions Of Literacy, Loukia K. Sarroub Apr 2002

In-Betweenness: Religion And Conflicting Visions Of Literacy, Loukia K. Sarroub

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

In this article, I examine the multiple uses of religious and secular text at school, home, and in the community. Specifically, I focus on how Yemeni American high school girls employ religious, Arabic, and secular texts as a means for negotiating home and school worlds. The frame of reference—in-betweenness—is a powerful heuristic with which the contextual uses of texts and language among the Yemeni American students can be delineated. In-betweenness signifies the immediate adaptation of one’s performance or identity to one’s textual, social, cultural, and physical surroundings. During 1997–1999, I conducted ethnographic fieldwork in the Yemeni and Arab community in …

Phrasing In Fluent Reading: Process And Product, Connie Briggs, Salli Forbes Apr 2002

Phrasing In Fluent Reading: Process And Product, Connie Briggs, Salli Forbes

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

Recent national studies (National Reading Panel, 2000; Partnership for Reading, 2001; Snow, 1998) include fluency as one of the critical components of reading development. Although these sources agree that fluency is important, their definitions describe fluency as a product of reading. They do not address the contribution of fluency to developing reading proficiency. It is only when we look at reading as a complex process that we begin to understand the role that phrased and fluent reading plays in building an effective system (Briggs & Forbes, 2001).
