Mesopotamian Imagery And Influence In The Book Of Daniel, Eric Jensen Apr 2002

Mesopotamian Imagery And Influence In The Book Of Daniel, Eric Jensen

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

Sometimes neglected in the scholarly literature on the book of Daniel is the investigation into Mesopotamian parallels and influence linguistically, culturally, and literarily on its content and composition. However, some recently published articles are giving the subject of Daniel in its Near Eastern milieu the attention it deserves. This paper will examine two of these recent essays and one earlier work on the subject, and posit some original ideas on possible Mesopotamian influence particularly in regard to oneiromancy (dream interpretation) and animal imagery in the book of Daniel.

Asante Indigenous Goldsmithing:The Impact Of Contemporary Culture On Akan Jewelry, Dana Wilson Apr 2002

Asante Indigenous Goldsmithing:The Impact Of Contemporary Culture On Akan Jewelry, Dana Wilson

African Diaspora ISPs

World famous for their gold ornaments, I chose to examine the evolution of Akan jewelry production in "Asante Indigenous Goldsmithing: The Impact of Contemporary Culture on Akan Jewelry". It was through an apprenticeship with local indigenous goldsmith and several interviews that I was able to gain insight into not only the techniques and tools used, but the discrepancies that devide those who work in the traditional manner from goldsmiths who incorporate more contemporary machinery. After three weeks of field research in Kumase, I realized it is a very ambigous line that separates the two.Further literary research encouraged me to write …

The Historical Exodus Of The Musama Disco Christo Church, Amy Cox Apr 2002

The Historical Exodus Of The Musama Disco Christo Church, Amy Cox

African Diaspora ISPs

The Musama Disco Christo Church (MDCC) is a Christian church founded in 1922 under the direction of the Holy Spirit in the Gold Coast, or what is today known as Ghana. In its early history the members of the church were confronted with skeptics, ridicule, and hardships. The initially small group that grew into a healthy congregation was forced to relocate four times before they finally found peace at their current home, Mozano via Gomoa Eshiem. This history of the Musama Disco Christor Church focuses on their exodus, starting with the founder's first prophecy and continuing on their journey of …

Truth And Consequences: Renaud Camus And The Personal, Brian G. Kennelly Apr 2002

Truth And Consequences: Renaud Camus And The Personal, Brian G. Kennelly

World Languages and Cultures

A year before his untimely death in 1980, in the days before the internet, before even the minitel bleu or rose, Roland Barthes compared the personals – at that time still print-based – of two popular French dailies. On the one hand, the advertisements in Le Nouvel Observateur belied artifice, he noted. The information their writers shared publicly with potential mates revealed a certain banal artificiality. Despite the obvious effort the creators of the ads had put into catching the eye of possible matches, in spite of the care with which they had weighed the words before ultimately selecting …

Metaphors Of Mathematics In Corneille's Theater, Nina Ekstein Apr 2002

Metaphors Of Mathematics In Corneille's Theater, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Mathematical metaphors are a distinctive and characteristic feature of Corneille’s theater, closely tied to his dramatic aesthetics. I divide these metaphors into two groups, identities and combinatorics. The field of identities deals with different kinds of equations, from the level of language, where elements are equated or placed in some other relationship that can be expressed mathematically, to the level of plot, where, for example, the search for identity (e.g. who is Héraclius?) resembles an algebraic equation. Combinatorics involves the arrangements and combinations of elements, and finds its greatest application here in the question of the constitution of couples to …

Cricket, Colonialism And The Capital Market: Winning Does Not Matter But Losing Hurts, R Srinivasan Apr 2002

Cricket, Colonialism And The Capital Market: Winning Does Not Matter But Losing Hurts, R Srinivasan

Working Papers

There is increasing evidence of the inadequacy of National1 explanations of asset-pricing. It has been established empirically that mood, induced by such natural phenomena as lunar phases or sunshine, affects asset prices. This paper provides evidence, from one-day cricket international (ODI) matches played by India, that there is a significant negative impact on the daily stock market returns when the national team loses. Empirically, losing in India matters somewhat more than losing outside. The mood induced by losing a match appears to conditioned by history, in that losing to nations that represent the 'colonizers' matters but not losing to nations …

Singular And Plural Address In The Scriptures, James R. Rasband Apr 2002

Singular And Plural Address In The Scriptures, James R. Rasband

BYU Studies

Steeped in post-Enlightenment philosophy with its primary focus on the individual, modern readers may unwittingly assume that the Lord likewise is focused solely on individuals when he promises blessings or assigns responsibilities. Although the scriptures contain many instances where the Lord speaks to individuals separately, he also speaks to the Church or his people collectively. It is not always easy to distinguish between these two modes of address, especially because the English pronoun you can be either singular or plural. However, awareness of this linguistic issue can improve our reading of the scriptures, at times revising our understanding substantially.

A Lesson Before Prying: Invitation To Inquiry Within A Collaborative Community Of Literacy Educators, Nancy L. Williams, Mary Lou Morton Apr 2002

A Lesson Before Prying: Invitation To Inquiry Within A Collaborative Community Of Literacy Educators, Nancy L. Williams, Mary Lou Morton

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

A university-school collaborative, responding to the many challenges of urban educators, including high-stakes testing, invited the authors to improve literacy instruction. The authors chronicle their initials steps of this action research. Their lesson before prying into the teaching and learning lives of the stakeholders of the learning community indicated that the teachers a) used professional vocabulary that often conflicted with classroom practices, b) expressed interest in improving instruction, and c) highly value their students.

Purchasing Power: One School District's Decisions To Purchase Three Reading Programs, Teresa B. Jayroe, Devon G. Brenner

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

To understand decision-making processes of purchasing supplemental reading programs, the researchers conducted interviews with teachers, administrators, and central office personnel, asking them to describe curricular purchasing decisions, grant writing, and budgeting process. These interviews, observations, and documents allowed us to understand many perspectives of the decisionmaking process.

Fuzzy Product -Limit Estimators: Soft Computing In The Presence Of Very Small And Highly Censored Data Sets, Kian Lawrence Pokorny Apr 2002

Fuzzy Product -Limit Estimators: Soft Computing In The Presence Of Very Small And Highly Censored Data Sets, Kian Lawrence Pokorny

Doctoral Dissertations

When very few data are available and a high proportion of the data is censored, accurate estimates of reliability are problematic. Standard statistical methods require a more complete data set, and with any fewer data, expert knowledge or heuristic methods are required. In the current research a computational system is developed that obtains a survival curve, point estimate, and confidence interval about the point estimate.

The system uses numerical methods to define fuzzy membership functions about each data point that quantify uncertainty due to censoring. The “fuzzy” data are then used to estimate a survival curve, and the mean survival …
