Brand Name Translation: Language Constraints, Product Attributes And Consumer Perceptions In East And Southeast Asia, Frank C. Hong, Anthony Pecotich, Clifford J. Shultz Jul 2002

Brand Name Translation: Language Constraints, Product Attributes And Consumer Perceptions In East And Southeast Asia, Frank C. Hong, Anthony Pecotich, Clifford J. Shultz

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The primary purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between foreign brand name translation and product-related cues-such as physical quality, perceived origin, and brand name-on consumers' perceived quality, price, and purchase intentions. In translations from alphabetic to character-based languages such as Mandarin, two generic methods of brand name translation are available: (1) direct translation for the meaning of the brand name and (2) phonetic translation for the pronunciation of the brand name. The results from a series of structurally related experiments designed to investigate the effects of brand name translation in a cross-cultural context indicate that for an …

Machine-Learned Contexts For Linguistic Operations In German Sentence Realization, Eric K. Ringger, Simon Corston-Oliver, Michael Gamon, Robert Moore Jul 2002

Machine-Learned Contexts For Linguistic Operations In German Sentence Realization, Eric K. Ringger, Simon Corston-Oliver, Michael Gamon, Robert Moore

Faculty Publications

We show that it is possible to learn the contexts for linguistic operations which map a semantic representation to a surface syntactic tree in sentence realization with high accuracy. We cast the problem of learning the contexts for the linguistic operations as classification tasks, and apply straightforward machine learning techniques, such as decision tree learning. The training data consist of linguistic features extracted from syntactic and semantic representations produced by a linguistic analysis system. The target features are extracted from links to surface syntax trees. Our evidence consists of four examples from the German sentence realization system code-named Amalgam: case …

Orwell And Huxley: Making Dissent Unthinkable, John N. Williams Jul 2002

Orwell And Huxley: Making Dissent Unthinkable, John N. Williams

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper I compare the fictional world depicted by Orwell’s 1984 with that of Huxley’s Brave New World from the point of view of an analytic philosopher. Neither novel should be read as predictions, the accuracy of which can be used to judge them. Rather, both attempt to portray what humanity could conceivably become. The authenticity of this conceivability is a necessary condition of the power of both works to raise central philosophical questions about the human condition. What is ethically wrong with control? How far can Man go in recreating himself? In what sense are these worlds anti-utopian? …

Creating Inclusive Organizations: Its Meaning And Measurement, Bryan Christopher Hayes Jul 2002

Creating Inclusive Organizations: Its Meaning And Measurement, Bryan Christopher Hayes

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

There is growing interest in the concept of inclusion by both scientists and practitioners. The goal of the current study was to bring empirical support to the organizational inclusion literature. Inclusion was defined as a psychosocial need and a model was developed specifying its relationship to antecedent and consequence variables. The measurement model was explored with a sample of responses from 418 undergraduate students (Study 1). The measurement model was confirmed and the structural model was assessed with a sample of responses from 609 employees of a medical center (Study 2). Results of structural equation modeling provided limited support for …

UNM Annual Reports

VITAL ACADEMIC CLIMATE* by Brian Foster, Provost/Vice President of Academic Affairs A great university engages students and faculty fully in important ideas and issues ... not just to learn about them, but to take them apart and put them back together, to debate, deconstruct, resist, reconstruct and build upon them. Engagement of this sort takes concentration and commitment, and it produces the kind of discipline and passion that leads to student and faculty success and satisfaction in their studies, research, performance, artistic activity and service. It is also the kind of activity that creates a solid, nurturing spirit of community. …

The Promise And Peril Of Charitable Choice: Religion, Poverty Relief, And Welfare Reform In The South, John P. Bartkowski, Helen A. Regis Jun 2002

The Promise And Peril Of Charitable Choice: Religion, Poverty Relief, And Welfare Reform In The South, John P. Bartkowski, Helen A. Regis

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This study analyzes narratives of welfare reform and faith-based poverty relief articulated by religious leaders in rural Mississippi congregations. These congregations are situated in and around Mississippi's Golden Triangle Region, a locale that includes a diverse group of small and mid-sized towns, as well as remote rural areas. As a state with entrenched social disadvantage, a thriving religious economy, and the nation's first faith-based welfare reform program, Mississippi is an ideal locale to study this important issue. We begin by discussing the charitable choice provision in welfare reform legislation. This legal provision bars discrimination against religious organizations as social service …

Beyond The Mirror, Judith Thyen Jordan Jun 2002

Beyond The Mirror, Judith Thyen Jordan

Theses and Graduate Projects

The history of disability discrimination as dehumanization is explored as a foundation for the paper. This question is then explored using a framework of socially constructed reality and symbolic convergence theory. For this analysis, communication and perception are the key elements drawn from each theory.

The conclusion of this analysis is that genuine "empowerment" requires a reconstructed social reality that defines people with visible physical disabilities as "normal."

Extent Of Digestion Affects The Success Of Amplifying Human Dna From Blood Meals Of Anopheles Gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae), W. R. Mukabana, W. Takken, P. Seda, G. F. Killeen, W. A. Hawley, B. G.J. Knols Jun 2002

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The success of distinguishing blood meal sources of Anopheles gambiae Giles through deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) profiling was investigated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification at the TC-11 and VWA human short tandem repeats (STR) loci. Blood meal size and locus had no significant effect on the success of amplifying human DNA from blood meals digested for 0, 8, 16, 24 and 32 h (P = 0.85 and 0.26 respectively). However, logistic regression found a significant negative relationship between time since ingestion and the success probability of obtaining positive PCR products among meals digested for between 8 and 32 h (P …

The Need For Proximal Mechanisms To Understand Individual Differences In Altruism, Gustavo Carlo, Rick A. Bevins Jun 2002

The Need For Proximal Mechanisms To Understand Individual Differences In Altruism, Gustavo Carlo, Rick A. Bevins

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

An "Open Peer Commentary" on the article "Altruism and selfishness" by Howard Rachlin.

There are three concerns regarding Rachlin’s altruism model. First, proximal causal mechanisms such as those identified by cognitive neuroscientists and behavioral neuropharmacologists are not emphasized. Second, there is a lack of clear testable hypotheses. And third, extreme forms of altruism are emphasized rather than common forms. We focus on an overarching theme – proximal mechanisms of individual differences in altruism.

Through The Talking Glass: Translucence And Translation In The Condé Museum’S Psyche Gallery, Russell J. Ganim Jun 2002

Through The Talking Glass: Translucence And Translation In The Condé Museum’S Psyche Gallery, Russell J. Ganim

Department of Modern Languages and Literatures: Faculty Publications

The forty-four stained-glass windows (dating from 1540–44) that recount the mythological tale of Psyche in Chantilly’s Condé Museum present a unique semeiological challenge to scholars. Accompanied by lyric inscriptions of either four or eight lines, the panels reveal an image/text combination that represents a literal example of the Renaissance notion of ut pictura poesis. These seldom-discussed panels merit inquiry because they reflect certain historic, artistic, and literary trends that illustrate factional and intellectual movements crucial to understanding France of the early to mid-sixteenth century. In its examination of these issues, this essay asks three questions:
1) What is the political …
