Neighbourhood Effects And Community Spillovers In The Australian Youth Labour Market, Dan Andrews, Colin Green, John Mangan
Neighbourhood Effects And Community Spillovers In The Australian Youth Labour Market, Dan Andrews, Colin Green, John Mangan
LSAY Research Reports
Neighbourhood effects refer to the situation whereby residential location impacts on the social outcomes of individuals, above and beyond what would be expected from their personal and family characteristics. A number of theories of neighbourhood effects exist. These can be broadly classified as theories of collective socialisation theories; contagion-based or 'epidemic' theories; and information network theories. Existing Australian research has focused mainly on the impact of neighbourhoods on youth education decisions. In contrast, this study models the probability of unemployment as a function of personal characteristics, family structure and neighbourhood composition. [Executive summary, ed]

A Greek Perspective Of Efl (English As A Foreign Language) : Tracing Linguistic Difficulties, Concerns And Issues That Greek Native Speakers Encounter, When They Acquire English As A Foreign Language In The Greek Educational System, Anastasia Anagnostopoulou
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The main purpose of this research project was to explore linguistic elements that potentially hinder or assist Greek native speakers in their effort to acquire English as a Foreign Language in the Greek educational system. The research also aimed at touching on some characteristics of the Greek educational system and of the way EFL is taught in Greece that affects the acquisition of English as a foreign language. For that purpose, data were collected through a survey and interviews of adult Greek native speakers in the central coast of California. The findings indicated that the acquisition of foreign languages, and …

The Structural Status Of Bora Classifiers, David J. Weber
The Structural Status Of Bora Classifiers, David J. Weber
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
I claim that Bora classifiers have the structural status of (bound) nouns, based on facts like the following:
- Some classifiers also occur as independent nouns (possibly with minor phonological differences).
- Classifiers have the referential properties typical of nouns. Like typical nominals, they denote classes of objects and may refer to a member of the class they denote. They are never used to attribute properties to another referring expresssion.
- Classifiers have the distribution typical of nouns: they may be a clausal subject, they may be modified by a relative clause, they may have a prepositional complement, and so forth.
And classifiers …

This paper describes the retrieval experiments for the main task and list task of the TREC-2002 question-answering track. The question answering system described automatically finds answers to questions in a large document collection. The system uses a two-stage retrieval approach to answer finding based on matching of named entities, linguistic patterns, keywords, and the use of a new inference module. In answering a question, the system carries out a detailed query analysis that produces a logical query representation, an indication of the question focus, and answer clue words.
A Women's Script : Individual Recognition Through Created Community, Laurel Hunter
A Women's Script : Individual Recognition Through Created Community, Laurel Hunter
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Our perception, understanding and awareness of cultures outside US borders is defined and created by the source from which we learn the information. This Capstone looks at the differences between learning about cultural phenomena through popular versus scholarly works and whether building a global community, cross-cultural understanding and tolerance are promoted or made more difficult. The context of this discussion focuses on Nushu, a Women's Script on the brink of extinction in the Hunan province of China.
Language Planning To Construct Power, Inequality, And Hegemony, Arturo Ruelas
Language Planning To Construct Power, Inequality, And Hegemony, Arturo Ruelas
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Because of the historical and current state and national language situation, or 'dilemma' as some would have it, California has issued several language policies, such as the English Language Development (ELD) Standards and official U.S. English. The primary purpose of language policy/planning is to make "explicit the mechanisms by which planning processes interact with other historical-structural forces that form language communities and determine patterns of language structure and use" (Planning language, planning inequality Tollefson 36). Still, language policies and ideologies are "articles of faith" subject to empirical verification, where there are profound related effects to the object of their inquiry …

Anything Less Than A Man : Race, Manhood, And Insurgency In The Us Military, 1970-1974, Kevin Miller
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The US Military generated a series of responses to racial conflicts that occurred in the early 1970s, including the uprisings aboard the Navy ships Kitty Hawk and Constellation. These responses constituted a counter-insurgent code, where the legitimacy of African American servicemen involved in uprisings was questioned. The social and behavioral sciences were also used by the military to universalize the claims made in these counter-insurgent documents to the entirety of the African American community. This paper studies how manhood was used in bother counter-insurgent prose and scientific studies to deny the agency of African American servicemen engaged in struggles against …

Anyone involved in legal education today may wonder where we are, and what we are doing, in our task of teaching. While I am no better placed than anyone else to be able to offer anything approaching a synoptic view of legal education, I can still offer a few thoughts on teaching law. These thoughts are meant neither as a dire warning nor as a call to action. They are published, rather, out of a desire to share some ideas I have culled from the experience of teaching these past twenty years in law school. Teachers and students who find …

Filling Preposition-Based Templates To Capture Information From Medical Abstracts, Gondy Leroy, Hsinchun Chen
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Due to the recent explosion of information in the biomedical field, it is hard for a single researcher to review the complex network involving genes, proteins, and interactions. We are currently building GeneScene, a toolkit that will assist researchers in reviewing existing literature, and report on the first phase in our development effort: extracting the relevant information from medical abstracts. We are developing a medical parser that extracts information, fills basic prepositional-based templates, and combines the templates to capture the underlying sentence logic. We tested our parser on 50 unseen abstracts and found that it extracted 246 templates with a …

Interpersonal And Pedagogical Communication: An Argument For Natural Communication Practices In The Romanian Efl Classroom, Dana-Anca Cehan
Interpersonal And Pedagogical Communication: An Argument For Natural Communication Practices In The Romanian Efl Classroom, Dana-Anca Cehan
MA TESOL Collection
The paper explores aspects of EFL classroom discourse in the Romanian context and pleads for the use and cultivation of natural communication practices and relevant language behavior in the classroom.
Viewing classroom discourse not only in pedagogical terms but also as a social event, the paper provides a dual perspective on the varied EFL classroom discourse strategies. Some characteristic classroom discourse features, such as its micro-functions, language switching and typical turn-taking are examined and compared to the characteristics of natural encounters. It is argued that the language teachers who ascribe to interpersonal goals in classroom discourse can enhance their students’ …

This paper is based on David Hawkins’ framework of the I-Thou-It with an expanded and personalized interpretation. It aims at defining more precisely the roles of the I, the Thou, and the It in the author’s classroom. The paper also cites research related to this framework and compares the findings, differences and similarities of author’s research with those of other researchers. The paper examines each of the roles and the interplay that takes place between and among them.
The paper explains the advantages of the subject-centered classroom, i.e. dominance of the It. Thus, the emphasis of the paper is on …

MA TESOL Collection
This project is a research paper about low self-esteem Japanese students who have a hard time communicating with Americans in spite of the fact that their English ability is high enough. It is based on my private teaching experience with one of many Japanese students in Boston. This paper is composed of two sections. The first section shows that low self-esteem can be one of the main obstacles to foreign language acquisition for Japanese students. The second section is about what we can do as ESL teachers.

The question forms examined were taken from a variety of sources and are defined in this paper. The main aim of the project was to discover if, through awareness of how I use questions, it was possible to increase the fluency of student responses. A further aim was to see if students were able to use more of their language skills …
Simplification And Personalization Of French Grammar, Regina Dee
Simplification And Personalization Of French Grammar, Regina Dee
MA TESOL Collection
The materials included in this project have been developed as a result of my emerging understanding of French grammar since I began studying it in 1976. I began teaching a French Activities class in 1986 to eighth graders at St. Andrews and third and fourth graders at an elementary school in Baltimore as a student at Morgan State University. While I was completing my student teaching at Baltimore City College Preparatory School, I found that my students had difficulties understanding textbook explanations. I therefore began to create my own explanations during sessions when students came for after school help. I …
Making Meaning: A Teacher’S Journey, Joanne Griffin Yorks
Making Meaning: A Teacher’S Journey, Joanne Griffin Yorks
MA TESOL Collection
This thesis shows how one teacher gained an increased understanding of the way she learns, discovered a theoretical support base for her learning style and found validation for her way of making meaning. Melding this new awareness with what was for her a new theoretical approach to teaching reading, reader-response theory, and then adapting the theory for the ESL classroom, she sought to offer her students opportunities similar to those she’d had to use reading to bring about new understandings of self and increased confidence in one’s ability to make meaning for oneself. The first chapter is an introduction to …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Kimberly K. Blakesley
Graduate Research Papers
The most vital role an administrator can play is that of aiding teachers to enable students to learn. This will be done through giving and coaching unselfishly. The need of an educator in any position is to pass on the key that will enable students to renew their faith and confidence in their own abilities. Once the student finds or accepts this key and uses it, they will unlock the golden door to learning--then the rest is up to them. The constant repetition of learning will be absorbed by that other mind of theirs, the subconscious, and eventually will be …
