Report to Stakeholders
From a start-up institution with great expectations just three years ago, SMU has grown leaps and bounds. This past year was no exception, as we reached new heights while reaffirming the foundational vision of what we are – and want to be. A university with a rigorous curriculum and the right kind of academic and cultural environment for research, exploration and experimentation – where calculated risks can lead to ultimate success. A university full of dynamically talented students and academically outstanding faculty – interactive players in the process of education who make up SMU’s rich intellectual and personally diverse fabric. …

The Social Responsibility Of Corporate Law Professors, Lyman P.Q. Johnson
The Social Responsibility Of Corporate Law Professors, Lyman P.Q. Johnson
Scholarly Articles
Most statements of corporate social responsibility focus on the responsibilities of corporate decision makers or their advisors Professor Johnson argues that corporate law professors-the persons who educate the students who will become lawyers counseling corporate decision makers-also have a social responsibility. He believes that professors should find various ways to raise the subject of corporate social responsibility in the basic corporations course, and he advocates rejecting a classroom approach that addresses only shareholder-manager relations After describing several possible ways to do this, Professor Johnson spotlights fiduciary laws as a fruitful area to enrich student understandings of director duties in a …

The focus of this study will explore how the dysgraphic disability of one child affects teachers' perceptions of that child's capabilities, intelligence, and performance of daily tasks associated with school and schoolwork. The child will use the Tablet PC's handwriting recognition technology to determine if the assistive technology tool improves the child's school performance and his ability to produce legible notes and papers. Worksheets were downloaded into the Tablet PC prior to use in school so that the child could complete all classroom work on the Tablet PC. [This student benefited from being able to tum hand written notes into …

The Total Talent Portfolio: Using Different Data To Gain A More Holistic View Of Our Learners, Steven M. Lysenko

This study determined how the collection of student data could help a team of teachers learn more about their pupils and increase instructional efficacy. 121 students of 8th grade white house team at Spry Middle School in Webster, NY were selected to pilot this study. Student inventories measured 4MAT Thinking Styles, Learning Styles, Multiple Intelligences, and Interest. The team then used this data to aid in classroom grouping. The teachers found that the TTP …
“The Chinese Believe In Spirits”: Belief And Believing In The Study Of Religion, Catherine M. Bell
“The Chinese Believe In Spirits”: Belief And Believing In The Study Of Religion, Catherine M. Bell
Religious Studies
A recent round of books, both popular and scholarly, reveal that as a society we are, once again, fascinated with the issue of belief. While the more popular books tend to adopt a fairly straightforward and uncomplicated notion of believing and then find major problems of rationality, the more scholarly books readily accept a type of rationality to beliefs while problematizing the act of believing in other, more involuted ways. Both types of argument remind the scholar of religion that the academic discipline of religious studies has not contributed much to this discussion for quite a while. As described in …

APC Monographs
The APC Summer held in January 2001 aimed to provide: a two-day intensive program that linked theory and practice in a chosen area relevant to school leaders in their day to day work; an opportunity for practising school leaders to develop an operational framework to be applied to strategy planning or to the management of key projects in their school; a big picture framework in which school leaders can contextualise their work; and a series of exemplary practices whose underlying principles can be adapted for use in other settings.

Retrieving Information, Interpreting, Reflecting, And Then... : Using The Result Of Pisa Reading Literacy., Juliette Mendelovits
2002 - Providing World-Class School Education
This paper discusses the results achieved by Australia in the initial report on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). The German reaction to a low score for German students is described. Three responses to PISA reading literacy results in Australia are described. These include: pragmatic use of the PISA reading literacy results at a national level; retrieving information from the international study and using it to create a benchmark for reading literacy for fifteen year-olds in Australia; and, using what has been learnt about reading literacy to question, evaluate and perhaps modify the way that reading literacy is taught …

One of the first collections to focus on independent writing programs, A Field of Dreams offers a complex picture of the experience of the stand-alone. Included here are narratives of individual programs from a wide range of institutions, exploring such issues as what institutional issues led to their independence, how independence solved or created administrative problems, how it changed the culture of the writing program and faculty sense of purpose, success, or failure.

Users coming to our library catalogs are more often looking for materials dealing with particular subjects rather than seeking specific titles or authors. Therefore, when we prepare our catalogs we must take special care to use terminology which will best retrieve this material. We must pay special attention to the "aboutness" of each item in order to select the most precise term.

Writing Gojri: Linguistic And Sociolinguistic Constraints On A Standardized Orthography For The Gujars Of South Asia, Wayne E. Losey
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
This study presents descriptions of the phonology and morphology of the two major dialects of Gojri spoken in Pakistan, and compares them with the Gojri spoken in Punch District of Indian-administered Kashmir. In light of this comparative data and the implications for Gojri-to- Urdu literacy, it evaluates various orthographic conventions currently used by leading writers and institutions. It explores Urdu-based spellings which are linguistically sound and otherwise conducive to transitional literacy, and which lend themselves to orthographic standardization across the east-west dialect continuum. It also includes an extended treatment of the challenge of representing Gojri tone.
This study will provide …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Maria Trese Cashman
Graduate Research Papers
Monroe (1997) said, "School should not reflect what society is, but rather school should model what society should be" (p. 193). This statement summarizes my reasons for becoming an administrator. Iowa's public schools are some of the finest learning institutions in the nation. These same schools, however, frequently reflect the negative characteristics of society. Lack of respect, segregation of students, and elitist attitudes are prevalent characteristics of today's society and today's schools. I want to be a leader who will make the necessary changes to maintain our high academic standards for all students and make our schools a welcoming place …
