Mapping And Predicting The Ionospheric Effects To Communication Systems In Northern Aurora Areas Using The Global Positioning System, Lingyun Wang
Engineering
This thesis focuses on mapping and predicting ionospheric effects to communication systems in northern high latitude areas using GPS (Global Positioning System). The monitoring of ionospheric scintillation and TEC (Total Electron Content) over Fairbanks, Alaska has been achieved by using the GSV4004 GPS Ionospheric Scintillation and TEC Monitor (GISTM), which has been installed on the roof of Duckering Building at UAF since September 2001. The algorithm of acquiring equivalent vertical TEC above Fairbanks from various satellite measurements is given in detail. Both an empirical ionosphere model, IRI, and a physics-based ionosphere model, PIM, are used to verify the TEC real …

A Characterization Of Mixed Forest Stands In The Tanana Valley, Alaska, Susan Louise Vogt
Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (AFES) Theses
The objective of this thesis is to define the composition, age structure, volume ranges, and community types present in the Tanana Valley mixed stands. Sixty-six permanent sample plots were established in 22 forest stands located throughout the Valley. Plots were at least 100 feet from a road. Total height, crown height, diameter breast height were measured and health and vigor were assessed for 5,415 trees. Five tree species and 57 herb and shrub species were found. White spruce, birch, and aspen numbers are generally less in mixed stands than predicted for pure stands. Stand density index values, a method of …
Using Histomorphometric Traits Of Bone Microarchitecture In The Determination Of Biological Affinity, E. Augustus Goodman
Using Histomorphometric Traits Of Bone Microarchitecture In The Determination Of Biological Affinity, E. Augustus Goodman
Anthropology
This research began to establish alternate possible means for determining the biological affinity for fragmented skeletal remains between geographically disparate populations, specifically American-Caucasians and Southeast Asians. The goal is to determine the feasibility of developing a method that may be used in the field to differentiate the remains of U.S. servicemen from people of Southeast Asia. This technique is based upon differences in bone histomorphometric variables. The variables used in this research are the osteon area (On. Ar), Haversian canal area (H. Ar), and osteon population density (OPD). The conclusions reached in this research suggest that differences exist on the …
Predictors Of Success At A Rural Juvenile Offender Facility, Gunnar Sven Ebbesson
Predictors Of Success At A Rural Juvenile Offender Facility, Gunnar Sven Ebbesson
Psychology
Although risk factors contributing to failure in treatment of young offenders have been studied extensively, little is written about what effects success. This study on the latter takes advantage of data obtained at a local treatment facility. This study uses statistical strategies to compare 7 different variables from a set of archival data with the outcome variable, which is 'success in treatment'. The seven independent variables are ethnicity, age at entry to treatment, pre-release pass (PRP), days in treatment, FAS/FAE, sexual offender, and psychiatric diagnosis. This data has been accumulated by a clinician at the facility and offered to the …
Women, Alcohol Use Disorders, And Sexuality: An Exploration Of Beliefs, Patricia S. Moore
Women, Alcohol Use Disorders, And Sexuality: An Exploration Of Beliefs, Patricia S. Moore
Psychology
Extensive research has been conducted on issues of sexuality for women with Alcohol Use Disorders (AUD). These issues are relevant both to the development of and recovery from AUD. Little of this research has focused on the importance of women's beliefs about sexuality at the time of drinking and during recovery. This study sought to identify these beliefs and to determine their importance in the development of and recovery from AUD. A qualitative research design was used whereby interviews with four women in long-term recovery (3 or more years) were analyzed. It was found that, overall, beliefs about sexuality became …
The Effect Of A Low Copper Diet On Muskox Calf Immune Function And Health, Rhonda Michelle Swor
The Effect Of A Low Copper Diet On Muskox Calf Immune Function And Health, Rhonda Michelle Swor
Biological Sciences
Weight loss and ill thrift are common problems encountered in muskox calves raised in captivity. Varied diagnostic results suggest that there is immunosuppression possibly related to trace mineral intake. This experiment evaluates the influence of a single trace element, copper, on muskox calf health and development. Muskox calves consuming a diet containing 5 ppm Cu exhibited lower weight gains, reduced survivability, depleted lymphoid tissue, thinner aortic arches, more muscle wasting and an increased occurrence of diarrhea than a group consuming the same diet but receiving injectable Cu supplementation. This study demonstrates the importance of adequate copper in the diet ensuring …

The Ideal Lead Time For Tornado Warnings - A Look From The Customer’S Perspective, Rick Ewald, Jared L. Guyer
The Ideal Lead Time For Tornado Warnings - A Look From The Customer’S Perspective, Rick Ewald, Jared L. Guyer
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Improving the amount of advanced warning time (lead time) for tornado warnings is one of the goals spelled out in the National Weather Service (NWS) Vision 2005 Strategic Plan (1999). Since the beginning of the NWS modernization effort, tornado warning lead times have increased from four to ten minutes, with the goal of 15 mi nutes set for 2005. In concert with increasing lead times, the NWS also has goals in place for increasing the probability of detection (POD) while decreasing the false alarm rate (FAR).
Accomplishing these goals will be no easy task. Rothfusz (2000) noted that forecasters may …

The Signaling Pathway Of Oxysterol Induced Apoptosis In Chinese Hamster Ovary (Cho)-K1 Cells., Lin Yang
The Signaling Pathway Of Oxysterol Induced Apoptosis In Chinese Hamster Ovary (Cho)-K1 Cells., Lin Yang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Apoptosis, a form of genetically programmed cell death, plays a key role in regulation of cellularity of the arterial wall. During atherogenesis, improper apoptosis may cause abnormalities of arterial morphogenesis, wall structural stability, and metabolisms. It has been well established that vascular cells undergo apoptosis after uptake of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). Thus, an analysis of the signaling pathway of apoptotic induction by oxLDL is of value in understanding the development of atherosclerotic plaque. In order to elucidate the signaling pathway of apoptosis induced by oxLDL, we have used Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-K1 cells treated with a potent oxysterol, 25-hydroxycholesterol …

Hiv Tat Protein Activates Endothelial Cells Through Nfκb And Map Kinase Pathways., Jason L. Henry
Hiv Tat Protein Activates Endothelial Cells Through Nfκb And Map Kinase Pathways., Jason L. Henry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
HIV infection has been shown to predispose patients to accelerated development of heart disease. One mechanism for this pathology may involve endothelial activation either by HIV itself or by its secreted proteins, gp120 (a viral envelope protein) and tat (a protein that upregulates transcription of viral genes). We have studied the effects of gp120 and tat on signaling and production of inflammatory cytokines by Human Pulmonary Artery Endothelial Cells (HPAEC). HPAEC were stimulated at varying time points with combinations of gp120, tat, and monokines (IL-1β and TNFα). Cell lysate fractions were analyzed for MAP Kinase activity and NFκB activation, and …

Ishmael: The Dissolution Of A Romantic And The Emergence Of A Poet., Allison M. Pepper
Ishmael: The Dissolution Of A Romantic And The Emergence Of A Poet., Allison M. Pepper
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although Ishmael does not appear to be a main character in Moby Dick, his narration is integral to the text. Only through telling the story is Ishmael able to give himself a concrete identity, which is reflected not only through himself, but through the thoughts, speeches, and actions of the other characters, specifically Ahab and the shipmates. Ishmael represents the fragmented Romantic of nineteenth century American society. He is bound by a traditional patriarchal world where he must break away from the father to establish his own identity. He has lost his connection to nature, the primal source of his …
Models And Graphics In The Analysis Of Categorical Variables: The Case Of The Youth Tobacco Survey., Deborah Susan Hosler
Models And Graphics In The Analysis Of Categorical Variables: The Case Of The Youth Tobacco Survey., Deborah Susan Hosler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Youth Tobacco Surveys have been conducted in several states in the U.S. in recent years, in order to design policies with the goal of reducing tobacco use among young people. Some primary analysis of those surveys has been done, but few analyses include modeling, and the study of independence has been addressed, mainly, in the bivariate context.
In this work contemporary methods, which are of relative recent appearance in categorical data analysis, will be examined, including logistic and log-linear modeling as well as graphical displays and correspondence analysis. These methods will be applied to data from the 2000 Tennessee Youth …
Coverage Properties Of The Inverse Sinh Transformation And The Adjusted Wald Confidence Intervals For The Odds Ratio And The Relative Risk., Troy Allen Bowman
Coverage Properties Of The Inverse Sinh Transformation And The Adjusted Wald Confidence Intervals For The Odds Ratio And The Relative Risk., Troy Allen Bowman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The inverse sinh transformation on the Woolf interval is used to calculate the confidence interval for the odds ratio and the relative risk in a 2 x 2 table. According to Robert Newcombe, the new interval should improve the coverage probabilities and shorten the width of the confidence interval for these ratios, but the new interval requires evaluation of coverage properties. In this thesis, we will evaluate the exact coverage properties of this modified interval in extreme cases. Also, we will compare the coverage properties of this new interval to other widely-used adjusted intervals. Through comparisons of exact coverage probabilities …
