Design Of Overlay Networks For Internet Multicast - Doctoral Dissertation, August 2002, Yunxi Sherlia Shi Aug 2002

Design Of Overlay Networks For Internet Multicast - Doctoral Dissertation, August 2002, Yunxi Sherlia Shi

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Multicast is an efficient transmission scheme for supporting group communication in networks. Contrasted with unicast, where multiple point-to-point connections must be used to support communications among a group of users, multicast is more efficient because each data packet is replicated in the network – at the branching points leading to distinguished destinations, thus reducing the transmission load on the data sources and traffic load on the network links. To implement multicast, networks need to incorporate new routing and forwarding mechanisms in addition to the existing are not adequately supported in the current networks. The IP multicast are not adequately supported …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

This review summarizes a collection of lactic acid bacteria that are now undergoing genomic sequencing and analysis. Summaries are presented on twenty different species, with each overview discussing the organisms fundamental and practical significance, environmental habitat, and its role in fermentation, bioprocessing, or probiotics. For those projects where genome sequence data were available by March 2002, summaries include a listing of key statistics and interesting genomic features. These efforts will revolutionize our molecular view of Gram-positive bacteria, as up to 15 genomes from the low GC content lactic acid bacteria are expected to be available in the public domain by …

Deep Ecology And Heideggerian Phenomenology, Matthew Antolick Aug 2002

Deep Ecology And Heideggerian Phenomenology, Matthew Antolick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the connections between Arne Naess's Deep Ecology and Martin Heidegger's Phenomenology. The latter provides a philosophical basis for the former. Martin Heidegger's critique of traditional metaphysics and his call for an "event" ontology that is deeper than the traditional substance ontology opens a philosophical space in which a different conception of what it is to be emerges. Heidegger's view of humans also provides a basis for the wider and deeper conception of self Arne Naess seeks: one that gets rid of the presupposition that human beings are isolated subjects embedded in a framework of objects distinct from …

The production of neutrons carrying at least 20% of the proton beam energy (xL > 0.2) in e+ p collisions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for a wide range of Q2, the photon virtuality, from photoproduction to deep inelastic scattering. The neutron-tagged cross section, ep → e′ Xn, is measured relative to the inclusive cross section, ep → e′ X, thereby reducing the systematic uncertainties. For xL > 0.3, the rate of neutrons in photoproduction is about half of that measured in hadroproduction, which constitutes a clear breaking of factorisation. There is about a 20% rise in the …

High-Resolution Physical Map For Chromosome 16q12.1-Q13, The Blau Syndrome Locus., Xiaoju Wang, Helena Kuivaniemi, Gina Bonavita, Charlene J Williams, Gerard Tromp

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The Blau syndrome (MIM 186580), an autosomal dominant granulomatous disease, was previously mapped to chromosome 16p12-q21. However, inconsistent physical maps of the region and consequently an unknown order of microsatellite markers, hampered us from further refining the genetic locus for the Blau syndrome. To address this problem, we constructed our own high-resolution physical map for the Blau susceptibility region. RESULTS: We generated a high-resolution physical map that provides more than 90% coverage of a refined Blau susceptibility region. The map consists of four contigs of sequence tagged site-based bacterial artificial chromosomes with a total of 124 bacterial artificial chromosomes, …

Informed Consent: Its Origin, Purpose, Problems, And Limits, Nancy M. Kettle Aug 2002

Informed Consent: Its Origin, Purpose, Problems, And Limits, Nancy M. Kettle

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The doctrine of informed consent, defined as respect for autonomy, is the tool used to govern the relationship between physicians and patients. Its framework relies on rights and duties that mark these relationships. The main purpose of informed consent is to promote human rights and dignity. Some researchers claim that informed consent has successfully replaced patients' historical predispositions to accept physicians' advice without much explicit resistance.

Although the doctrine of informed consent promotes ideals worth pursuing, a successful implementation of these ideals in practice has yet to occur. What has happened in practice is that attorneys, physicians, and hospital administrators …

Remodeling Of Organelle-Bound Actin Is Required For Yeast Vacuole Fusion, Gary Eitzen, Li Wang, Naomi Thorngren, William Wickner Aug 2002

Remodeling Of Organelle-Bound Actin Is Required For Yeast Vacuole Fusion, Gary Eitzen, Li Wang, Naomi Thorngren, William Wickner

Dartmouth Scholarship

Actin participates in several intracellular trafficking pathways. We now find that actin, bound to the surface of purified yeast vacuoles in the absence of cytosol or cytoskeleton, regulates the last compartment mixing stage of homotypic vacuole fusion. The Cdc42p GTPase is known to be required for vacuole fusion. We now show that proteins of the Cdc42p-regulated actin remodeling cascade (Cdc42p --> Cla4p --> Las17p/Vrp1p --> Arp2/3 complex --> actin) are enriched on isolated vacuoles. Vacuole fusion is dramatically altered by perturbation of the vacuole-bound actin, either by mutation of the ACT1 gene, addition of specific actin ligands such as latrunculin …

Developing Treatment Fidelity Measures In A Wraparound Program For Severely Emotionally Disturbed Children Using The Child And Adolescent Needs And Strengths Tool, David Sliefert Aug 2002

Developing Treatment Fidelity Measures In A Wraparound Program For Severely Emotionally Disturbed Children Using The Child And Adolescent Needs And Strengths Tool, David Sliefert

Psychology

This study utilized the strength-based components of the Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (CANS) assessment as a basis for creating the Treatment Fidelity Indicator (TFI). With a particular focus on strengths, this study initiated the development of a measure to assist agencies in recognizing whether each of the 19 strength-based dimensions were found in the case record. Seven cases were evaluated using two raters. Reliability was examined using the Cohen's kappa and memoing of the process. The growing expectations placed on agencies to provide proven treatment strategies and the limitations of resources available are challenges for quality conscious organizations. …

A Workshop Assessing The Effects Of Social Support On The Incidence Of Burnout, David Brian Bates Aug 2002

A Workshop Assessing The Effects Of Social Support On The Incidence Of Burnout, David Brian Bates

Psychology

This research was designed to address the issue of burnout by developing and presenting a workshop to 26 human service providers (primarily educated Caucasian women) to increase their level of social support and address organizational concerns. Two measures were used in a pre-posttest design: the Maslach Burnout Inventory and social support questionnaire developed for this study. The results showed that burnout dropped significantly on the emotional exhaustion subscale. There was a drop in the depersonalization subscale but it only approached significance. There was also a negative correlation of perceived social support satisfaction with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization at both pre …
