Kalirin Dbl-Homology Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor 1 Domain Initiates New Axon Outgrowths Via Rhog-Mediated Mechanisms, Victor May, Martin R. Schiller, Betty A. Eipper, Richard E. Mains Aug 2002

Kalirin Dbl-Homology Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor 1 Domain Initiates New Axon Outgrowths Via Rhog-Mediated Mechanisms, Victor May, Martin R. Schiller, Betty A. Eipper, Richard E. Mains

Life Sciences Faculty Research

The large multidomain Kalirin and Trio proteins containing dual Rho GTPase guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) domains have been implicated in the regulation of neuronal fiber extension and pathfinding during evelopment. In mammals, Kalirin is expressed predominantly in the nervous system, whereas Trio, broadly expressed throughout the body, is expressed at a lower level in the nervous system. To evaluate the role of Kalirin in fiber initiation and outgrowth, we microinjected cultured sympathetic neurons with vectors encoding Kalirin or with Kalirin antisense oligonucleotides, and we assessed neuronal fiber growth in a serum-free, satellite cell-free environment. Kalirin antisense oligonucleotides blocked the …

Schip Turns Five: Taking Stock, Moving Ahead, Jennifer Ryan Aug 2002

Schip Turns Five: Taking Stock, Moving Ahead, Jennifer Ryan

National Health Policy Forum

This issue brief notes the five-year anniversary of the effective date of Title XXI of the Social Security Act, the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). It looks at the successes of the program, as well as some of the obstacles SCHIP will face as it moves from childhood into adolescence and attempts to maintain its effectiveness in providing health coverage to uninsured children and families. The paper explores the critical funding impasse created by the downturns in the economy and the financing structure of the SCHIP statute. It also highlights the emerging issue of program retention and the need …

Experimental Autoimmune Encephalitis And Inflammation In The Absence Of Interleukin-12, Burkhard Becher, Brigit G. Durell, Randolph J. Noelle Aug 2002

Experimental Autoimmune Encephalitis And Inflammation In The Absence Of Interleukin-12, Burkhard Becher, Brigit G. Durell, Randolph J. Noelle

Dartmouth Scholarship

IL-12 is considered a critical proinflammatory cytokine for autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and its animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). IL-12 is a heterodimer composed of a p35 subunit and a common p40 subunit shared by other cytokines. Both IL-12 p40–/– and p35–/– mice fail to produce IL-12 p70 heterodimer. However, in contrast to p40–/– mice, p35–/– mice are highly susceptible to the induction of EAE, establishing that IL-12 p70 is not essential for the development of EAE. When compared with wild-type mice, both p40–/– and p35–/– mice show deficiencies in primary …

A Monopropellant Milli-Newton Thruster System For Attitude Control Of Nanosatellites, Donald Platt Aug 2002

A Monopropellant Milli-Newton Thruster System For Attitude Control Of Nanosatellites, Donald Platt

Small Satellite Conference

Work is progressing on monopropellant thrusters for use as an attitude control system for nanosatellites (satellites whose mass is under 10 kilograms). The thrust range for these microthrusters is on the order of millinewtons. Systems using both hydrazine and hydrogen peroxide are being developed which will offer higher performance than currently available thrusters for nanosatellites. Complete thruster systems using both propellant combinations have been built and are undergoing evaluation. Hot firings are currently being conducted. The microthruster system will be tested on an upcoming nanosatellite to be launched at the end of this year. These thrusters will offer an inexpensive, …

Stpsat-1: A New Approach To Dod Experiment Spaceflight, Patricia Davis, Glen Cameron, Eric Aamot, Nathan Devilbiss Aug 2002

Stpsat-1: A New Approach To Dod Experiment Spaceflight, Patricia Davis, Glen Cameron, Eric Aamot, Nathan Devilbiss

Small Satellite Conference

For small satellites, finding affordable access to space is a daunting hurdle. The Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) Secondary Payload Adapter (ESPA) promises to make excess capacity on future EELV launches available for the Department of Defense (DoD) Space Test Program (STP) and other organizations as a lower-cost launch alternative. STP Satellite Mission 1 (STPSat-1) is the first STP satellite built specifically to exploit this capacity. STPSat-1 continues STP’s mission to provide access to space for DoD sponsored experiments. This spacecraft hosts four such experiments: Spatial Heterodyne Imager for Mesospheric Radicals (SHIMMER); Computerized Ionospheric Tomography Receiver in Space (CITRIS); Micro-Electro-Mechanical …
