Phenanthrene Adsorption And Desorption By Melanoidins And Marine Sediment Humic Acids, John Andrew Terschak Apr 2002

Phenanthrene Adsorption And Desorption By Melanoidins And Marine Sediment Humic Acids, John Andrew Terschak

Oceanography

Sediments are major reservoirs of persistent petroleum contamination in marine environments. Petroleum hydrocarbons associate with the sediment organic matter, of which humic acids are an important constituent. This study examined the role that humic acid and its structure plays in the kinetics and mechanisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) interactions with sediments. Natural humic acids, with a wide range of properties, were isolated from Alaska coastal marine sediments. Melanoidins were synthesized and used as humic acid analogs. The humic acids were characterized by elemental and isotopic analyses, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and cross-polarized magic angle spinning 13C nuclear magnetic resonance …

Sponges Dominant In The Alaska Intertidal: Biology, Ecology, And Genetic Diversity, Ann Lynette Knowlton Apr 2002

Sponges Dominant In The Alaska Intertidal: Biology, Ecology, And Genetic Diversity, Ann Lynette Knowlton

Marine Biology

The role of the sponge, Halichondria panicea, in a Kachemak Bay, Alaska, intertidal community was investigated through field and laboratory experiments. The relationship between H. panicea and co-occurring macroalgae was studied and results indicate that removing macroalgae had no effect on sponge abundance. A laboratory feeding trial investigating H. panicea and its primary predator Archidoris montereyensis showed that nudibranchs consuming symbiotic sponge had higher feeding and egg production rates than individuals eating aposymbiotic sponge. In a simulated predation event, initial sponge growth rates into experimental feeding scars were high, indicating a response mechanism to tissue damage. A naturally occurring high …

The Anchor, Volume 115.22: April 17, 2002, Hope College

The Anchor: 2002

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Collaborating On Environmental Conservation, John R. Nolon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Development law, local laws and policy that influence private land developers to appropriately develop land, affect the concerns of several groups including, private developers, municipalities, and environmentalists. By promoting environmental principles and revoking local regulatory obstacles, local governments can help encourage cooperation among these groups. This article highlights the success many New York communities have experienced in accommodating population growth while still reducing taxes and providing protection for the natural environment.

Radiation Transport Modeling Of Beam-Target Experiments For The Aaa Project: Quaterly Report, William Culbreth Apr 2002

Radiation Transport Modeling Of Beam-Target Experiments For The Aaa Project: Quaterly Report, William Culbreth

Reactor Campaign (TRP)

The national development of technology to transmute nuclear waste depends upon the generation of high energy neutrons produced by proton spallation. Proton accelerators, such as LANSCE at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, are capable of producing 800 MeV protons. By bombarding a lead/bismuth target, each proton may generate 500 or more neutrons that can activate fission products or induce the fission of transuranic isotopes.

The Monte Carlo radiation transport code MCNPX developed at LANL is an important tool in the design of transmuter technology. It must be validated, however, for the neutron energy that will be employed. Experiments are being …

Nuclear Criticality Analyses Of Separations Processes For The Transmutation Fuel Cycle: Quarterly Report, William Culbreth, Pang Tao Apr 2002

Nuclear Criticality Analyses Of Separations Processes For The Transmutation Fuel Cycle: Quarterly Report, William Culbreth, Pang Tao

Separations Campaign (TRP)

During the first two quarters of the work, the tasks included training students in the use of Monte Carlo codes used in radiation transport studies and the assessment of neutron multiplication factors for specific problems outlined by ANL-East through Drs. Laidler and Vandegrift.

The proposal also included objectives for the first year of work on this project, as listed below. The work conducted in the second quarter of the project was in partial completion of these objectives.

• Train UNLV students in the use of SCALE and/or MCNP for the assessment of nuclear criticality.

• Assess neutron multiplication factor, k …

Improving The Campus Sustainability Assessment Process, Andrew Nixon Apr 2002

Improving The Campus Sustainability Assessment Process, Andrew Nixon

Honors Theses

The human enterprise is rapidly overwhelming the Earth’s ecological systems and draining its natural resources. According to Vitousek et al., as much as one-half of the planet’s land surface has been transformed by human activity; more than half of the world’s available fresh water is used by humans; and a quarter of the planet’s bird species have been driven to extinction by human activity (Vitousek et al, 1997). These and many other negative trends pose catastrophic implications for the future of our species and for the planet’s other inhabitants.

The New Jesuits
Most of them share Latin Mass as a childhood memory, the priest with his back to the congregation. But for all of them, having been ordained in the aftermath of the Second Vatican Council, when they’ve presided over Mass themselves, it has always been facing the congregation and in the local language, as priests presiding among, rather than presiding over.
