In the past to ensure that the economic vitality of existing and future commercial areas were and would be maintained, a regulatory system was developed by both the Regions and Municipalities in Ontario. Their Official Plans were designed to create a hierarchy of retail commercial areas based upon the perceived need to provide adequate retail facilities to consumers without having excess retail space, thereby creating a retail structure that provided access to goods of all types to consumers with minimum transportation costs. The importance of repeat victims as an effective target for crime prevention measures has been widely recognised. Many have studied repeat victims of property crimes, but few have studied repeat victims of personal crimes and their spatial distribution. This study used 1996 and 1997 crime data from the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) in Ontario, Canada and focused specifically on domestic-abuse-related crimes and repeat victims of those crimes. Various methods of mapping and analysis were used to better understand the spatial distribution of those crimes and vulnerability of the victims. This thesis addresses two questions related to the broad topic of mountain hydrology: 1) How do interannual hydrological balancee and pathway components vary in complex temperate high mountain environments at various spatio-temporal scales? 2) a) Is it possible, using dedicated hydrological models, for significant errors in simulated runoff components despite good hydrograph recreations (i.e. right results for wrong reasons)? b) If so, what kinds of errors are encountered? Aquantis, LLC, Santa Barbara, California intends to construct and deploy an ocean current turbine (C-Plane) to extract electrical power from the kinetic energy of the Florida Current. This study characterizes the physical oceanographic environment of the Florida Current flow, at a proposed deployment site located at 26.11 North Latitude, 79.50 West Longitude, which will influence the physical and mechanical design of the C-Plane. Local characteristic features of the Florida Current were determined from data collected during a 19 month in situ study using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) moored at 330 meters, a ship-mounted, inertial-correcting ADCP, and data culled …

The Freshman Year Experience movement has created an excellent opportunity for academic library outreach. Its values, which include collaboration among various campus units charged with supporting student success and a focus on student mastery of key academic skills, correspond well with the objective of many college and university libraries: to become a more central part of the institution's educational mission. This dissertation examines how Southern literary representations of the natural world were influenced by, and influenced, the historical, social, and ecological changes of the 1930s and 1940s. Specifically, I examine the ways that nature is conceived of and portrayed by four authors of this era: Erskine Caldwell, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Zora Neale Hurston, and William Faulkner; through their works, I investigate the intersections of race, class, and gender with the natural environment. Thiobencarb (TB), widely used for the control of broadleaf weeds, grasses, and sedges in rice fields, is considered safe for rice plants when used at recommended rates. TB's reductive dechlorination product, dechlorinated thiobencarb (DTB), is highly toxic to rice. TB is naturally transformed into DTB in field soils in certain areas in Japan and the United States. The resultant syndrome is called delayed phytotoxicity syndrome (DPS). This research was conducted to characterize DPS in Louisiana, to compare the toxicity of TB and DTB to rice, to determine uptake and retention rates of TB and DTB by rice, to confirm that …
