Mesembrioxylon Obscurum, A New Combination For Araucarioxylon? Obscurum Knowlton, From The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation, Wyoming, David A. Medlyn, William D. Tidwell

Western North American Naturalist

A reinvestigation of the type specimen of Araucarioxylon? obscurum Knowlton (1900) from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation in the Freezeout Hills of Wyoming has determined that this fossil should be transferred to Mesembrioxylon Seward (1919) as M. obscurum comb. nov. (Knowlton) Medlyn and Tidwell. Knowlton (1900), who was uncertain of its appropriate generic disposition, tentatively referred the wood to Araucarioxylon because it had obscure growth rings and relatively low ray height. Reexamination of Knowltons slides demonstrates that the wood has uniseriate, rarely biseriate rays, podocarpoid pitting, and diffuse axial parenchyma, none of which Knowlton mentioned. Tracheary pitting is mostly separate, …

The Impact Of Air Quality On The Selection Of A Home, Carol Lane May 2002

The Impact Of Air Quality On The Selection Of A Home, Carol Lane

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Hedonic price method studies have assumed that individuals consider air quality as a characteristic of their homes. The purpose of this study is to determine if air quality is a significant characteristic considered when an individual decides where to live. This study uses a survey to determine where air quality ranks amongst the different characteristics of a home. My results show that air quality is significant but ranks below structural and neighborhood characteristics.

Mist Variation And Epiphytic Orchid Abundance In A Monteverde Cloud Forest, May 2002, Christopher Frohlich May 2002

Mist Variation And Epiphytic Orchid Abundance In A Monteverde Cloud Forest, May 2002, Christopher Frohlich

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

There has been an observed increase in the frequency of days with no mist during the dry season in Monteverde (Pounds et al. 1999). This trend towards an increasingly dry environment could have detrimental effects on epiphytic orchids. The purpose of this project was to investigate the effect of mist level as well as mist frequency and branch direction on orchid abundance in 12 Daphnopsis americana (Lauraceae) host trees. Mist collectors were placed on 24 sample branches within the first horizontal angle of primary branches and mist was collected for eight days from all directions. Abundance counts of total orchids …

Nucleation And Coagulation Of Particulate Matter Inside A Turbulent Exhaust Plume Of A Diesel Vehicle, Donghee Kim May 2002

Nucleation And Coagulation Of Particulate Matter Inside A Turbulent Exhaust Plume Of A Diesel Vehicle, Donghee Kim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this study is to develop a physical model to accurately predict the nucleation, coagulation, and dynamics of particulate matter emission from diesel-fueled engines. The uniqueness of this research is that measured particulate matter (PM) size distribution data is not required a priori to solve the nucleation/coagulation equations; instead the PM concentration is predicted based on the fuel sulfur content, fuel to air ratio, exhaust flow rate, and the ambient conditions. This study presents the CFD modeling of an exhaust plume dispersed from a stack pipe of a tractor truck powered by a 330 HP diesel engine. This …

A Study Of Obstacles To Use Of Methane Gas Produced In Landfills For Energy, Sharee Lynn Bowdidge May 2002

A Study Of Obstacles To Use Of Methane Gas Produced In Landfills For Energy, Sharee Lynn Bowdidge

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to examine why landfill generated methane gas is not being treated as a resource, and used more widely as an energy source in the Southwestern United States. In this thesis, I have identified four possible barriers that may describe why this resource is not being used more often at landfill operations: 1) technological difficulties, 2) economic limitations, 3) regulatory constraints, and 4) insufficient desire to use. I have explored each of the possibilities in depth through case study interviews with individuals employed at six landfill operations, and individuals associated with landfill policy making. Although …
