Tanf/Welfare Client Decline And Community Context In The Rural South, 1997-2000, Domenico Parisi, Diane K. Mclaughlin, Michael Taquino, Steven Michael Grice, Neil R. White
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This article examines the extent to which declines in welfare rolls relate to five major dimensions of community: (1) local demographic composition, (2) local labor market conditions, (3) local civic capacity, (4) local spatial characteristics, and (5) changes in local economic opportunities. Results based on data from the Mississippi Department of Human Services indicate that demographically, economically, and socially advantaged communities were more likely to experience high declines in welfare rolls. Rurality was associated with lower likelihood of high declines in welfare rolls across Mississippi counties. Clearly, a combination of a stronger local economy and social support in a local …

'Tahoe' Case: When Environmental Regulations Go 'Too Far', John R. Nolon
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
This article reviews a recently decided United States Supreme Court case which held that a thirty-two month moratorium on development did not constitute a taking per se. The Court, building on logic from other recent decisions, found that moratoria are an effective land use tool, which prevent inefficient land development and consequently lead to increased land value. This article analyzes the court’s decision to hold that moratoria are never takings per se, instead holding that a court shall perform an ad hoc analysis to determine a moratorium’s constitutionality.

o NEWSLETTER John Muir's Aunt Mary by Roberta M. McDow ost people acquainted with the life of John Muir are probably aware that his father Daniel and Daniel's sister Mary were orphans. In 1885, John wrote in his obituary for his father: His mother was English, his father Scotch and he was born in Manchester, England in the year 1804. When he was only six months old his mother died and he lost his father also a few months later when an elder sister became a mother to him and brought him up on a farm that belonged to a …

Research Protocol For The Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus): Mirage Click Collection Study, Adrienne M. Cardwell
Research Protocol For The Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus): Mirage Click Collection Study, Adrienne M. Cardwell
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Past research on dolphin echolocation has shown that dolphins can adaptively control the frequency and amplitude of echolocation clicks. The degree to which click production is controlled and the relationship between click variation and echolocation task remains uncertain. This thesis describes a research protocol for studying the adaptive control of dolphin echolocation. The protocol builds on past studies to investigate the manner in which the spectral characteristics of clicks and the overall number of clicks produce for a given task vary in relation to the type of task being performed.
