Ecological Modelling Using The Spreadsheet Model Tabsim, L. Matejicek
Ecological Modelling Using The Spreadsheet Model Tabsim, L. Matejicek
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Simulation of ecological systems represents more sophisticated analysis, which extends possibilities of standard research methods. In contrast to majority of computer languages available for calculation of dynamic models, spreadsheet models (TabSim-Table Simulation) offer to spend more effort on investigating the features of a dynamic system, rather than writing a program code. The program structures are replaced by table objects, which represent basic dynamic relations (integrations and time delays) and static relations (described by built-in functions and user functions). In addition to calculation of dynamic and static relations, the wide range of built-in graphs and graphic objects can be used for …
Data-Based Mechanistic And Top-Down Modelling, Peter C. Young
Data-Based Mechanistic And Top-Down Modelling, Peter C. Young
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The paper discusses the problems associated with environmental modelling and the need to develop simple, ‘top-down’, stochastic models that match the information content of the data. It introduces the concept of Data-Based Mechanistic (DBM) modelling and contrasts its inductive approach with the hypotheticodeductive approaches that dominate most environmental modelling research at the present time. The major methodological procedures utilized in DBM modelling are outlined and two practical examples illustrate how it has been applied in a hydrological and water quality context. The use of this same methodology as a basis for the evaluation and simplification of large deterministic simulation models …

Experiences In An Integrated Assessment Of Water Allocation Issues In The Namoi River Catchment, Australia, R. A. Letcher, A. J. Jakeman
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The Namoi river catchment in northern NSW is an important irrigation region. However water resources in this region are increasingly stressed. Both surface and groundwater supplies are overallocated in many areas of the catchment. Management options to reduce allocations in line with available supply and environmental requirements are expected to have long term social, economic and environmental implications. This paper looks at an integrated assessment model which has been developed to assess long term outcomes of management options for water allocation in the catchment. The development of this tool has been undertaken using an iterative approach with key stakeholders. Feedback …

Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan
Challenges, Strategies, And Tools For Research Scientists: Using Web-Based Information Resources, Danielle Bodrero Hoggan
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
Scientists face many challenges in harnessing web-based resources. Information overload, misinformation, fees, poorly designed navigation, and loss of browsability all hamper the scientist searcher. In addition, many scientists rely on only one or two databases and often miss unique information that is available through other sources. Librarians can team up with scientists to develop strategies to overcome the challenges of web-based information. For example, a librarian can teach effective information seeking techniques, including how to use controlled vocabularies, how to evaluate information on the web, and how to complement web-based resources with print resources. Librarians can also help scientists to …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper describes an integrated hydrologic, stream sediment and nutrient export modelling system. The modelling system is designed to simulate catchment-scale land and water management activities in the Ben Chifley Dam Catchment (BCDC). The dam has experienced problematic blue-green algal blooms over the past decade. The aim of the modelling is to examine management scenarios designed to reduce nutrient and sediment delivery from the BCDC. This paper describes the framework of the system along with brief description of each of the various components. The innovation of the modelling system is the integration of otherwise separate modelling approaches. The output of …
Catchment Modelling – A Resource Manager’S Perspective, J.E. Caminiti
Catchment Modelling – A Resource Manager’S Perspective, J.E. Caminiti
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Models are invaluable tools for resource management. Models help resource managers develop a shared conceptual understanding of complex natural systems, allow testing of management scenarios, predict outcomes of high risk and high cost environmental manipulations, and set priorities. Catchment modelling is a specialist field, and different modelling approaches are specialist areas in themselves. There are a plethora of models available that apply to integrated catchment management, from micro to landscape scales, from deterministic models to broad-brush models. Different philosophies abound; with some experts advocating top-down systems approaches and others who dismiss these as being too uncertain and based on opinion …

Regional Integrated Management Information System, M. A. Cameron, B. F. W. Croke, K. L. Taylor, Glen Walker, B. Watson
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Landholders, departmental agencies and other stakeholders have long been involved in knowledge building of the physical elements affecting land use. Often, however, this has been without any accompanying information on social and economic impacts, or systems for exploring catchment trade-off decisions. RIMIS is the concept of a regional management system designed for landscape managers. It has a web-compatible interface allowing multiple users to access distributed data sources (including spatial databases) and run distributed bio-physical and socio-economic models to explore catchment management problems i.e. ask ‘what if?’ questions. Its models bring together science, sociology and economics, to explore interactions and show …

Participatory Natural Resource Management: A Comparison Of Four Case Studies, M. Hare, R. A. Letcher, A. J. Jakeman
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper presents an overview of four recent participatory resource management projects carried outon three continents. The aim is to elicit from these case studies a description of participatory process structures aswell as an analysis of the driving forces behind the selection of stakeholders and their involvement inmanagement projects. The case studies represent four different process structures set up to achieve two categoriesof process goal. They also suggest four main drivers in the design of such structures: process goals, existingpower structures, process direction and stakeholder numbers. The concept of scale of action mismatch isintroduced as directly affecting two out of …
Lean Interfaces For Integrated Catchment Management Models: Rapid Development Using Icms, S. M. Cuddy, R. A. Letcher, M. B. Reed
Lean Interfaces For Integrated Catchment Management Models: Rapid Development Using Icms, S. M. Cuddy, R. A. Letcher, M. B. Reed
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
A move towards the development of lean, issue-focused interfaces is being explored to provide arapid delivery mechanism to transfer catchment science to managers and custodians. This approach is a moveaway from development of large decision support systems which attempt to anticipate a myriad ofmanagement questions. It relies on having a modelling system which supports the rapid building andintegration of catchment models, and is independent of the interface. ICMS (Interactive ComponentModelling System) is a PC-based software tool which has been developed with this in mind. The kernel ofthe ICMS system, ICMSBuilder, provides the modeller’s view of the world, on top of …
Nonparametric Test For Translog Specification Of Production Function In Japanese Manufacturing Industry, Y. Konishi, Y. Nishiyama
Nonparametric Test For Translog Specification Of Production Function In Japanese Manufacturing Industry, Y. Konishi, Y. Nishiyama
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Beginning with a series of pioneering work by Cobb and Douglas, estimation of productionfunction has been one of the main issues in empirical economics and econometrics in various aspects. Thefunctional form they used is called Cobb-Douglas production function. It is later generalized to so-calledtranslog production function which has a more flexible form to describe the relation between the output andinput levels. It is also analytically convenient for obtaining factor demand functions or cost function so that ithas been widely used in both macroeconomic and microeconomic empirical studies. However, it is wellknown that statistical analysis leads to incorrect conclusions in general …
An Integrated Modelling Approach For Assessing Water Policy Rules And Land Use Change Options, Juliet Gilmour, R. A. Letcher
An Integrated Modelling Approach For Assessing Water Policy Rules And Land Use Change Options, Juliet Gilmour, R. A. Letcher
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The primary aim of the study has been to develop a modelling framework to quantitatively assess the impact of water allocation rules upon economic and biophysical environments (primarily hydrological) at the catchment scale. This paper identifies development of the modelling approach to answer allocation questions by examining hydrological, land and agricultural production systems. The conceptual framework underpinning the modelling approach identifies the major aspects of integration between hydrological and production systems. The production model is integrated at various points within the hydrological cycle including rainfall, streamflow and runoff components. The outcome of the approach allows water to be moved around …

Environmental Modelling In Urban Areas With Gis, L. Matejicek, L. Benesova, J. Tonika
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
More accurate spatio-temporal predictions of urban environment are needed as a basis forassessing exposures as a part of environmental studies, and to inform urban protection policy andmanagement. This paper is focused on modelling in the GIS to estimate air, water and soil pollution in urbanareas. The basic environmental components are complemented by bio-monitoring, waste management andnoise exposure. The models, which use data from long-time monitoring, are developed using correlation, regression and factor analysis; simulation of dynamic relation and spatio-temporal phenomena. Integration ofa wide range of relatively independent factors enables more complex analysis of environment in urban areas.GIS, which can integrate a …
A Spatially Explicit Modelling Approach To Socioeconomic Development In South Africa, L. Erasmus, A. S. Van Jaarsveld, P. O. Bommel
A Spatially Explicit Modelling Approach To Socioeconomic Development In South Africa, L. Erasmus, A. S. Van Jaarsveld, P. O. Bommel
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
South Africa finds itself at a development cross road: optimism for "high road" development is bisected by a wasteland of poverty and overpopulation. Intervention policies are largely "faith-based", even in the face of rising uncertainties surrounding population growth, HIV/Aids and resource availability. Added to this are the complexities of disparate spatial development and social scenarios, mass urbanization and immigration. In order to confront these threats, decision makers need analytical tools that can be used to explore potential intervention policies for their efficacy, desirability and inadvertent consequences in nontarget sectors. Such tools should adequately address uneven spatial development across environmental, economic …

Restoration of wetlands involves the necessity of maintaining the high moisture content of thesites involved. Managing adequate hydrological conditions means supporting successful habitat restoration ofwetland ecosystems. Before the management practices are implemented, the formulation of objectives in thedevelopment of restoration policies is required. It should be based on an understanding of the primarynatural controls of the water regimes. This research focuses on practical approaches to the management ofdynamic water resources in the protected area of the Kampinos National Park in Poland. The area has thestatus of UNESCO MAB Biosphere Reserve. Valuable wetland ecosystems are present in the area. They hadbeen …

Environmental Damage Assessment Applied To Process Analysis. A Decision Support Alternative, I. Herrera, L. Kulay, Laureano Jiménez, Marta Schuhmacher
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Nowadays the environmental studies are increasingly important in the process analysis and design. These studies not only can be used to quantify the environmental damage, but also, as optimisation criteria together with technical and economical evaluations. In the present study, we develop a methodology based on several techniques (Risk Assessment (RA), Design Support Framework (DSF), and Endpoints Indicators Applying). This methodology which links the main aspects of process analysis and environmental damage assessment, comprehends three main steps: the first one involves the accomplishment of an inventory of raw material and energetic streams, which may be predicted or computed depending on …

Sensitivity Testing Of A Biophysical Toolbox For Exploring Water Resources Utilisation And Management Options, Wendy S. Merritt, B. G. W. Croke, A. J. Jakeman
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper investigates the sensitivities of model outputs to model parameter values within a Biophysical Toolbox developed as part of a Decision Support System (DSS) for integrated catchment assessment and management of land and water resources in the highland regions of northern Thailand. The toolbox contains a hydrological module based upon the IHACRES rainfall-runoff model, a crop model (CATCHCROP), and an erosion model (USLE) modified to suit conditions in northern Thailand. Emphasis in the development of the individual models within the Biophysical Toolbox was placed upon limiting model complexity. Limited data availability commonly restricts the complexity of the model structure …

Iwram: An Integrated Modelling Toolbox For Considering Impacts Of Development And Land Use Change In Northern Thailand, R. A. Letcher, B. F. W. Croke, A. J. Jakeman, Wendy S. Merritt, P. Perez
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The IWRAM Decision Support System was developed to consider economic, environmental, and sociocultural trade-offs involved with resource competition and development in the Mae Chaem catchment in Northern Thailand. IWRAM contains two modelling toolboxes utilising a nodal network structure for catchment analysis: a Biophysical Toolbox, for considering the biophysical (erosion, streamflow, crop) implications of 'painted on' land use scenarios; and, an Integrated Modelling Toolbox, which links models of household decision making with the biophysical toolbox to allow for consideration of socioeconomic and environmental trade-offs of many development and policy scenarios. This paper describes the Integrated Modelling Toolbox within the IWRAM system. …

Predicting Hydrologic Response From Physio-Climatic Attributes : An Application To Ungauged Sub-Catchments Of The Burdekin River, North Queensland, D. A. Post, B. F. W. Croke
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The Burdekin is a large (140,000 km2) catchment located in the dry tropics of North Queensland, Australia. To assess the water resources of this catchment, we require a methodology which will allow us to determine the daily streamflow at any point within the catchment. To this end, we have utilised a simple, lumped parameter model, IHACRES. Of the five parameters in the model, three have been set to default values, while the other two have been related to the physio-climatic attributes of the sub-catchment under consideration. The parameter defining total catchment water yield (c) was constrained using %yield, which is …

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
A mesophilic toluene-degrading consortium (TDC) and an ethylbenzene-degrading consortium (EDC) were established under sulfate-reducing conditions. These consortia were first characterized by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments, followed by sequencing. The sequences of the major bands (T-1 and E-2) belonging to TDC and EDC, respectively, were affiliated with the family Desulfobacteriaceae. Another major band from EDC (E-1) was related to an uncultured non-sulfate-reducing soil bacterium. Oligonucleotide probes specific for the 16S rRNAs of target organisms corresponding to T-1, E-1, and E-2 were designed, and hybridization conditions were optimized for two analytical formats, membrane and …
