Gleaning Information From Mandatory Livestock Price Reporting, Matthew Diersen Jun 2002

Gleaning Information From Mandatory Livestock Price Reporting, Matthew Diersen

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

Mandatory livestock price reporting has changed how prices are reported and used by analysts and market participants. Reporting has affected the availability of many reports and has added new reports and information. The new information often needs to be put into a meaningful form for direct use by analysts and participants. A brief overview of the evolution and implementation of mandatory price reporting is given. The new price reports are then discussed and compared to voluntary reports. Special attention is given to new reports that give insights into the short-and medium-run cattle supply situation. As South Dakota had State-level reporting …

Collective Healing Of Cultural And Historical Trauma: Towards A Model For European Americans As Informed By African American And American Indian Traditions, Elizabeth Christine Carlson

Theses and Graduate Projects

This qualitative study was undertaken to explore important concepts in the formation of a model for White Cultural Healing based on American Indian, African American and European American cultural healing traditions. Eight individuals selected based on their cultural awareness and understanding of the healing process. Two identify as African American, two as American Indian and the remaining four as European American. They were interviewed regarding their knowledge and experience of the cultural trauma in the background of their people and their traditional ways of healing. The content of the interviews was coded and analyzed thematically. The model for White Cultural …

Volcanic Eruptions On Mid-Ocean Ridges: New Evidence From The Superfast Spreading East Pacific Rise, 17˚-19˚S, John Sinton, Eric Bergmanis, Ken Rubin, Rodey Batiza, Tracy K P Gregg, Karl Gronvold, Ken C. Macdonald, Scott M. White Jun 2002

Volcanic Eruptions On Mid-Ocean Ridges: New Evidence From The Superfast Spreading East Pacific Rise, 17˚-19˚S, John Sinton, Eric Bergmanis, Ken Rubin, Rodey Batiza, Tracy K P Gregg, Karl Gronvold, Ken C. Macdonald, Scott M. White

Faculty Publications

Side-scan sonar, submersible observations and sampling of lava flows from the East Pacific Rise, 17_–19_S constrain the character and variability of submarine volcanic eruptions along mid-ocean ridges. Nine separate lava sequences were mapped using relative age and lithological contrasts among recovered samples. Axial lengths activated during eruptive episodes range from _1 to >18 km; individual flow field areas vary from <1 to >19 km2. Estimated erupted volumes range from <1 to >200 _ 106 m3. The largest unit is the chemically uniform Animal Farm lava near 18_370S. The youngest lava is the Aldo-Kihi flow field, 17_240–340S, probably erupted in the early 1990s from a …

Electrical Characterization Of Gel Collected From Shark Electrosensors, Brandon R. Brown Jun 2002

Electrical Characterization Of Gel Collected From Shark Electrosensors, Brandon R. Brown

Physics and Astronomy

To investigate the physical mechanism of the electric sense, we present an intial electrical characterization of the glycoprotein gel that fills the electrosensitive organs of marine elasmobranchs (sharks, skates, and rays). We have collected samples of this gel, postmortem, from three shark species, and removed the majority of dissolved salts in one sample via dialysis. Here we present the results of dc conductivity measurements, low-frequency impedance spectroscopy, and electrophoresis. Electrophoresis shows a range of large protein-based molecules fitting the expectations of glycoproteins, but the gels of different species exhibit litttle similarity. The electrophoresis signature is unaffected by thermal cycling and …

Will The Nation Be Ready For The Next Bioterrorism Attack? Mending Gaps In The Public Health Infrastructure, Eileen Salinsky Jun 2002

Will The Nation Be Ready For The Next Bioterrorism Attack? Mending Gaps In The Public Health Infrastructure, Eileen Salinsky

National Health Policy Forum

This paper provides an overview of critical weaknesses in public health preparedness capabilities and discusses policy initiatives to address these shortcomings. It examines developmental needs related to communication and coordination, information systems, laboratories, the development and distribution of vaccines and other countermeasures, emergency medical preparedness and response, and the public health workforce. The paper summarizes the status of federal and state plans to respond to these developmental needs and touches on the challenges likely to emerge as these plans are implemented.

Multifunctionality And Trade, George Pfeiffer Jun 2002

Multifunctionality And Trade, George Pfeiffer

Cornhusker Economics

Agricultural production results in a large number of joint products. Many are obvious: wheat and straw, corn and stalk grazing, etc. Many are somewhat less obvious: agricultural production results in open, usually attractive rural landscapes; agricultural income maintains local communities and provides rural employment; it maintains cultural values; and it provides food security. These are among the benefits often cited as spillover effects of agricultural production which are valued by society above and beyond the monetary value of the agricultural products themselves. Many have also noted that agricultural production frequently has negative spillover effects also. Among those cited are ground …
