Genetic Structure And Isolation By Distance In Napaea Dioica L. (Malvaceae): An Analysis Of Microsatellite Dna Variation., Jonathan Paul Wenger

Theses and Dissertations

Napaea dioica L. (Malvaceae) is a robust, dioecious perennial flowering plant that is endemic to the upper midwestem United States. Occurring exclusively on the floodplains o f small rivers, populations o f N. dioica are distributed discretely on a network o f riparian habitat throughout its range which is coincident with the southernmost margin o f the Wisconsinan continental glacier. Ten population o f N. dioica were sampled across the species geographic range and were assayed at four high resolution microsatellite marker loci to assess genetic diversity and population structure in relation to the riparian habitat network and the ecological …

Strategic Management Plan For Columbian Sharp-Tailed Grouse 2002, State Of Utah, Department Of Natural Resoures, Division Of Wildlife Resources

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus columbianus) is one of seven subspecies of Sharp-tailed Grouse. Historically, Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse occurred within sagebrush-native bunch grass habitat throughout the intermountain region, extending from British Columbia, Washington, Idaho and Montana south through portions of Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. Sharp-tailed Grouse populations range-wide began declining during 1880-1920 (Bart 2000). By 1936, the range of distribution had been reduced by two-thirds (Hart et al. 1950). Currently, Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse occur in only 5 % of their historic range-wide distribution and 4% of their distribution in Utah (Bart 2000). Within the …

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Spin trapping compositions in general have now been discovered to be effective in treating a variety of disorders, including disorders such as those arising from ischemia, infection, inflammation, exposure to radiation or cytotoxic compounds, not just of the central and peripheral nervous systems but of peripheral organ disease having a wide variety of etiologies. In the preferred embodiment, the compositions for treating tissue damage from ischemia contain PBN, or active derivatives thereof, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for intravenous, oral, topical, or nasal/pulmonary administration. Other preferred spin-trapping agents include 5,5-dimethyl pyrroline N-oxide (DMPO), α-(4-pyridyl-1-oxide)-N-tert-butylnitrone (POBN), and (TEMPO) and spin-trapping derivatives …

Closing The Loop: Recycling, Reformulation, And Reuse In Prince Edward, Amelia, Buckingham And Cumberland Counties, Andrea Louise Bridge

Theses & Honors Papers

Everything we do to the land, air, and water affects our quality of life on this planet. Since the beginning of time, human beings have generated and discarded trash. As the pollution of the United States continues to grow so have the problems with our nation's landfills. Americans throw away an average of 3.5 pounds of garbage per person each day, or approximately 160 million tons of it per year. Studies have been conducted that show that the majority of our trash consists of paper, yard trimmings, metal, plastics, glass, food wastes, rubber, leather, textiles, and miscellaneous inorganic materials.

Aerosolized Essential Oils And Individual Natural Product Compounds As Brown Treesnake Repellents , Larry Clark, John Shivik Jun 2002

Aerosolized Essential Oils And Individual Natural Product Compounds As Brown Treesnake Repellents , Larry Clark, John Shivik

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Chemical irritants useful as repellents for brown treesnakes (Boiga irregularis) were identified. Exposure to various compounds produced a range of intensities for locomotory behavior in snakes. Essential oils comprised of 10 g liter -1 solutions of cedarwood, cinnamon, sage, juniper berry, lavender and rosemary each were potent snake irritants. Brown treesnakes exposed to a 2-s burst of aerosol of these oils exhibited prolonged, violent undirected locomotory behavior. In contrast, exposure to a 10 g liter-1 concentration of ginger oil aerosol caused snakes to locomote, but in a deliberate, directed manner. We also tested specific compounds, all derivative …

Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Comorbidity, Comparative Biology And Treatment, David J. Nutt, James C. Ballenger, David Sheehan, Hans-Ulrich Wittchen

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a severe and chronic anxiety disorder characterized by uncontrollable worrying and somatic anxiety (tension, insomnia and hypervigilance). It is a common condition, with lifetime prevalence rates for DSM-IV GAD in the general population of approx. 5–6% being reported. In addition, like other anxiety disorders, GAD also shows comorbidity with depression and most of the other anxiety disorders. This article reviews data on the prevalence of GAD, its comorbidity with depression, and its social and economic impact. Proposed neurobiological mechanisms for GAD are discussed, since an understanding of these may help in the development of future …

Some Ethical Issues Surrounding Mediation, Robert P. Burns Jun 2002

Some Ethical Issues Surrounding Mediation, Robert P. Burns

Public Law and Legal Theory Papers

A progressively larger portion of social ordering occurs through mediation. Lawyers are often involved in mediation. From one perspective, mediation is simply facilitated negotiation. Thus the issues that pervade the ethics of negotiation reappear in the context of mediation without much change. Mediation, however, promises much more than facilitated negotiation. "Transformative mediation", now widely practiced, aims not primarily at maximizing outcomes, but at the moral transformation of the parties. This form of mediation poses much more fundamental questions about legal ethics and the lawyer's role. These questions implicate the general morality of legal and political discourse and the interrelationships of …

Memory Functioning In Children Exposed To Domestic Violence Trauma, Deanna Cosgrove Jun 2002

Memory Functioning In Children Exposed To Domestic Violence Trauma, Deanna Cosgrove

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the memory functioning in children exposed to domestic violence trauma. Research findings suggest that adult participants with a clinical diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as defined by the Diagnostic Statistical Manual-IV (American Psychiatric Association, 1994) suffer from impairments in memory associated with reductions in hippocampal volume. However, a question arises as to whether children who have been exposed to domestic violence trauma will differ from controls in their memory functioning. A question also arises as to the relationship between the children's parent-reported behaviors and their memory functioning. The Children's Memory Scale (CMS) (Cohen, 1997) was administered …

Treatment With Soluble Interleukin-15ralpha Exacerbates Intracellular Parasitic Infection By Blocking The Development Of Memory Cd8+ T Cell Response, Imtiaz A. Khan, Magali Moretto, Xiao-Qing Wei, Martha Williams, Joseph D. Schwartzman, F Y. Liew

Dartmouth Scholarship

Interferon (IFN)-γ–producing CD8+ T cells are important for the successful resolution of the obligate intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii by preventing the reactivation or controlling a repeat infection. Previous reports from our laboratory have shown that exogenous interleukin (IL)-15 treatment augments the CD8+ T cell response against the parasite. However, the role of endogenous IL-15 in the proliferation of activated/memory CD8+ T cells during toxoplasma or any other infection is unknown. In this study, we treated T. gondii immune mice with soluble IL-15 receptor α (sIL-15Rα) to block the host endogenous IL-15. The treatment markedly reduced the ability …
