The history of disability discrimination as dehumanization is explored as a foundation for the paper. This question is then explored using a framework of socially constructed reality and symbolic convergence theory. For this analysis, communication and perception are the key elements drawn from each theory.
The conclusion of this analysis is that genuine "empowerment" requires a reconstructed social reality that defines people with visible physical disabilities as "normal."

A Comparison Of Four Rodent Control Methods In Philippine Experimental Rice Fields, Md. Sayed Ahmed, Lynwood A. Fiedler
A Comparison Of Four Rodent Control Methods In Philippine Experimental Rice Fields, Md. Sayed Ahmed, Lynwood A. Fiedler
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Four rodent control techniques-sustained baiting (SB) with coumachlor. pulsed baiting (PB) with brodifacoum. a lethal electrified barrier (LEB), and a nonlethal electrified barrier (NLEB)-were evaluated on the experimental farm of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines. A fifth treatment (no experimental rodent control) was established for reference. Mean tiller damage and rodent activity, respectively. near harvest were 1.00%1 and 1.5% in the LEB plots, 1.6% and 18.0% in the SB plots, 2.1% and 16.0 % in the PB plots, and 4.1% and 32.5% in the NLEB plots. Highest mean tiller damage (9.3%) and rodent activity (56.0%) occurred …

Cryopreservation Of New World Screwworm Embryos, Dennis Berkebile, Roger Leopold, Jan Chirico, Wen Wang
Cryopreservation Of New World Screwworm Embryos, Dennis Berkebile, Roger Leopold, Jan Chirico, Wen Wang
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The following interpretive summary refers to an oral presentation given at the 2002 Annual Meeting of the Livestock Insect's Workers Conference. The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) has been successfully eradicated from the United States, Mexico and Central America. The program involves monitoring infestations and the mass rearing and release of sterile screwworms. In order for the program to be successful, research must be conducted to make the identification and rearing of the insect more efficient. Methods have been developed to distinguish the screwworm from other fly larvae that may be found in animal wounds using Polymerase Chain Reaction …

Hatch-Waxman, Generics, And Patents: Balancing Prescription Drug Innovation, Competition, And Affordability, Robin J. Strongin
National Health Policy Forum
This paper explores the complex connections among intellectual property protection, competition, and access to affordable prescription drug products. It focuses on several provisions of the Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act of 1984 (Hatch-Waxman) and discusses the debate swirling around its reform. An overview of landmark intellectual property laws and a description of the generic drug approval process are also included.

The Need For Proximal Mechanisms To Understand Individual Differences In Altruism, Gustavo Carlo, Rick A. Bevins
The Need For Proximal Mechanisms To Understand Individual Differences In Altruism, Gustavo Carlo, Rick A. Bevins
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
An "Open Peer Commentary" on the article "Altruism and selfishness" by Howard Rachlin.
There are three concerns regarding Rachlin’s altruism model. First, proximal causal mechanisms such as those identified by cognitive neuroscientists and behavioral neuropharmacologists are not emphasized. Second, there is a lack of clear testable hypotheses. And third, extreme forms of altruism are emphasized rather than common forms. We focus on an overarching theme – proximal mechanisms of individual differences in altruism.

Don't Worry... It [Corn] Won't Kill You: The Starlink Crisis, Kelly J. Price
Honors Theses
What would you do ... if someone told you that the food you just ate was not safe for human consumption? In 1999, consumers across the nation were faced with this fear and began to second-guess the food they had been accustomed to eating for years. After Kraft Foods' Taco Bell taco shells were recalled in September for containing traces of StarLink corn, a genetically modified corn hybrid not approved for human consumption, consumer confidence in U.S. corn by-products decreased and manufacturer credibility dwindled (Aventis stops, 2000). People wanted to know who to blame for the apparent food contamination problem. …

We synthesized key findings from the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, the world's largest and longest-running experimental study of habitat fragmentation. Although initially designed to assess the influence of fragment area on Amazonian biotas, the project has yielded insights that go far beyond the original scope of the study. Results suggest that edge effects play a key role in fragment dynamics, that the matrix has a major influence on fragment connectivity and functioning, and that many Amazonian species avoid even small (<100-m-wide) clearings. The effects of fragmentation are highly eclectic, altering species richness and abundances, species invasions, forest dynamics, the trophic structure of communities, and a variety of ecological and ecosystem processes. Moreover, forest fragmentation appears to interact synergistically with ecological changes such as hunting, fires, and logging, collectively posing an even greater threat to the rainforest biota.
