Demining In Ethiopia: A Demanding Task, Josef Strebel Aug 2002

Demining In Ethiopia: A Demanding Task, Josef Strebel

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Mines and UXO are an ever-present danger for people and their livestock in many parts of Ethiopia, which has been ravaged by years of conflict and war. The Ethiopian Mine Action Office (EMAO) is the focal point of humanitarian mine action in Ethiopia and therefore in charge of locating and destroying the cruel and hidden killers. A demining program under its auspices began in May 2002 with clearance work in the priority areas of Northern Tigray.

Theodicy And Animals, Joseph J. Lynch Aug 2002

Theodicy And Animals, Joseph J. Lynch

Between the Species

It is widely acknowledged among those philosophers and theologians who have given the matter much thought that the fact of animal suffering challenges Theism in a distinctive way. Standard attempts to reconcile human suffering with a perfectly powerful and benevolent deity don’t seem to apply easily to the case of animals. Animals can hardly be said to deserve their suffering or be morally improved by it, nor is it generally supposed that animals will be compensated for their pain in an afterlife. On the face of it, then, animal pain appears to be a bothersome evil still left over when …

The Heat-Shock Response: Its Variation, Regulation And Ecological Importance In Intertidal Gastropods (Genus Tegula), Lars Tomanek Aug 2002

The Heat-Shock Response: Its Variation, Regulation And Ecological Importance In Intertidal Gastropods (Genus Tegula), Lars Tomanek

Biological Sciences

The enhanced synthesis of heat-shock proteins (hsps), called the heat-shock (or stress) response, is activated when environmental stress denatures proteins. Hsp synthesis is activated at the upper temperatures of an organism's thermal range and is therefore thought to be critical for enhancing thermal tolerance limits in ectothermic animals. Here I show that the two temperate sister species T. brunnea and T. montereyi that occupy the subtidal and low-intertidal zone differ from the low- to mid-intertidal T. funebralis (and the subtropical mid-intertidal T. rugosa) in (i) heat tolerance, (ii) the onset temperature of their main hsp, hsp70 (70 kDa), (iii) …

Biological Sciences

This review summarizes a collection of lactic acid bacteria that are now undergoing genomic sequencing and analysis. Summaries are presented on twenty different species, with each overview discussing the organisms fundamental and practical significance, environmental habitat, and its role in fermentation, bioprocessing, or probiotics. For those projects where genome sequence data were available by March 2002, summaries include a listing of key statistics and interesting genomic features. These efforts will revolutionize our molecular view of Gram-positive bacteria, as up to 15 genomes from the low GC content lactic acid bacteria are expected to be available in the public domain by …

Powerful Words, Susan Thorpe Aug 2002

Powerful Words, Susan Thorpe

Word Ways

There are two types of what I call powerful words:

whole words whose letter totals (assigning a=1, b=2, ... z=26) are a square, a cube etc.

words which break into a series of letter groups each of whose total is a square, cube etc.

Let us begin by taking a look at the first of these types of powerful word. Unreferenced words are in the OED, Second Edition. Sources of non-OED words are given at the end.

Nuclear Transformation Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii To Allow For Studies On Circadian Expression Of The Β-Tubulin Gene, Mohammed Khan Aug 2002

Nuclear Transformation Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii To Allow For Studies On Circadian Expression Of The Β-Tubulin Gene, Mohammed Khan

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Circadian rhythms are rhythms that are capable of free-running in constant conditions with a period of approximately 24 hours, that are able to compensate temperature effects on their periods, and that have the ability to entrain to daily light-dark and/or temperature cycle. In order to explore the circadian output pathway that regulates β-tubulin gene expression in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a nuclear transformation of the organism was performed with a β-tubulin promoter:reporter gene construct. To increase the efficiency of the selection, a cotransformation procedure was adapted with ble, an antibiotic resistance gene. To achieve maximum transformation efficiency, a cell wall-less mutant of …

Methods To Evaluate And Predict Student Success In Introduction To Animal Science At Western Kentucky University, Matthew Deppe Aug 2002

Methods To Evaluate And Predict Student Success In Introduction To Animal Science At Western Kentucky University, Matthew Deppe

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Outcomes assessment is the process of determining student progress in a class or academic program. Students, (n = 306), from six freshman-level introductory animal science classes at Western Kentucky University (WKU) were given subjective and objective evaluation instruments on the first and last day of class. Students self evaluated competencies on each of forty-nine course outcomes using a scale of 1-100. Twenty-one demographic questions were also answered. Students were given the same 50-question examination following completion of the subjective assessment on the first and last day of class. Student high school performance measures including the American College Test scores (ACT), …

Children's Understanding Of Racial Classifications As A Function Of Their Knowledge Of Inheritance, Jason Glerum Aug 2002

Children's Understanding Of Racial Classifications As A Function Of Their Knowledge Of Inheritance, Jason Glerum

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many studies have examined how children categorize various objects but few studies have looked at how children categorize race. Research shows that adults tend to essentialize race; that is, they treat race as a natural kind (Madole, Keleman, Glerum & Webb, 1999). Do children treat race in the same manner? This study examines how preschool children, second grade children, and fourth grade children treat race. Children were presented with stories and pictures describing a transformation to a person's racial characteristics (that is, a change in external appearance from white to black or black to white features) and asked to what …

Within-Litter Birth Weight Variation In The Domestic Pig And Its Relation To Pre-Weaning Survival, Weight Gain, And Variation In Weaning Weights, Barry N. Milligan, David Fraser, Donald L. Kramer Aug 2002

Within-Litter Birth Weight Variation In The Domestic Pig And Its Relation To Pre-Weaning Survival, Weight Gain, And Variation In Weaning Weights, Barry N. Milligan, David Fraser, Donald L. Kramer

Ontogeny Collection

To determine the relationship between within-litter birth weight variation and pre-weaning survival and weight gain, and to provide practical guidance on fostering low-birth-weight piglets, we analyzed piglet survival and weight gain in litters of piglets from 52 sows followed through eight consecutive parities. Litters with high variation in birth weight had more deaths, especially if the litter’s mean birth weight was low. High variation in birth weight was also associated with high variation in weaning weight, but was not significantly related to mean weaning weight. Piglets with birth weights well below the range of most of the litter (‘low-birth-weight piglets’) …

Fisheries Research Report No. 132 - A Review Of Food Availability, Sea Water Characteristics And Bivalve Growth Performance At Coastal Culture Sites In Temperate And Warm Temperate Regions Of The World, Sidney A. Saxby Aug 2002

Fisheries Research Report No. 132 - A Review Of Food Availability, Sea Water Characteristics And Bivalve Growth Performance At Coastal Culture Sites In Temperate And Warm Temperate Regions Of The World, Sidney A. Saxby

Fisheries Research Reports

The suitability of a coastal area for bivalve farming, as well as the density at which bivalves can be farmed in that area, is limited by the available food supply and other environmental variables. In this review, a range of successful and marginal bivalve growing areas in temperate and warm temperate coastal areas around the world are characterised. These include areas of high food and nutrient levels, such as Saldanha Bay in South Africa, and the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, through to more oligotrophic areas, typified by parts of the South Australian coastline and the Mediterranean Sea. The latter areas …

Reseeding Of Grazing Gastropods And Bivalves Into The Marine Environment In Western Australia, Jane Borg Aug 2002

Reseeding Of Grazing Gastropods And Bivalves Into The Marine Environment In Western Australia, Jane Borg

Fisheries Management Papers

The Department of Fisheries does not want to embark on what is ‘new territory’ in Western Australia without a policy framework to define what is to happen, why it is to happen, and what will happen if the project does or does not succeed. This paper therefore attempts to do three things. 1. It sets in place accepted definitions of reseeding and stock enhancement within the general context of fisheries management in Western Australia. 2. It discusses the policy issues associated with reseeding grazing gastropods and bivalves into the natural environment. 3. It proposes a framework or process to be …

Locating Landmines And Uxo: A Methodological Lesson From The Ethiopian Landmine Impact Survey, Michael Fleisher Aug 2002

Locating Landmines And Uxo: A Methodological Lesson From The Ethiopian Landmine Impact Survey, Michael Fleisher

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

One of the most important parts about implementing effective Landmine Impact Surveys is first identifying which communities have a landmine/UXO problem. The author describes how Expert Opinion Collection (EOC) is used in Ethiopia to overcome the obstacles survey teams face when gathering their information.
