The place and date of the domestication of the horse has long been a matter for debate among archaeologists. To determine whether horses were domesticated from one or several ancestral horse populations, we sequenced the mitochondrial D-loop for 318 horses from 25 oriental and European breeds, including American mustangs. Adding these sequences to previously published data, the total comes to 652, the largest currently available database. From these sequences, a phylogenetic network was constructed that showed that most of the 93 different mitochondrial (mt)DNA types grouped into 17 distinct phylogenetic clusters. Several of the clusters correspond to breeds and/or geographic …

Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 5 And Calcium Signaling In Retinal Amacrine Cells, Romina Sosa, Brian Hoffpauir, Michele L. Rankin, Richard C. Bruch, Evanna L. Gleason
Faculty Publications
To begin to understand the modulatory role of glutamate in the inner retina, we examined the mechanisms underlying metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5)-dependent Ca2+ elevations in cultured GABAergic amacrine cells. A partial sequence of chicken retinal mGluR5 encompassing intracellular loops 2 and 3 suggests that it can couple to both Gq and Gs. Selective activation of mGluR5 stimulated Ca2+ elevations that varied in waveform from cell to cell. Experiments using high external K+ revealed that the mGluR5-dependent Ca2+ elevations are distinctive in amplitude and time course from those engendered by depolarization. Experiments with a Ca2+-free external solution demonstrated that the …
Poisonous Plants Of Tennessee, Erica Fritz
Poisonous Plants Of Tennessee, Erica Fritz
Honors Theses
Many poisonous plants occur within Tennessee. These plants may have an evolutionary advantage over competing plants because of the presence of toxic secondary compounds. Consequently, plant species containing poisons may occur more frequently in advanced families than in primitive families. A list was compiled of those plants that occur in Tennessee that are known to be poisonous and these numbers were compared with the total number of species within both advanced and primitive families. Tennessee poisonous plants occur in higher percentages in those families that are primitive and moderately advanced than in those that are advanced.

A Metadata Approach To Preservation Of Digital Resources: The University Of North Texas Libraries' Experience, Daniel Gelaw Alemneh, Samantha K. Hastings, Cathy Hartman
Faculty Publications
Preserving long-term access to digital information resources is one of the key challenges facing libraries and information centers today. The University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries has entered into partnership agreements with federal and state agencies to ensure permanent storage and public access to a variety of government information sources. As digital resource preservation encompasses a wide variety of interrelated activities, the UNT Libraries are taking a phased approach to ensure the long-term access to its digital resources. Formulation of preservation policy and creation of preservation metadata for electronic files and digital collections are among the most important steps. This …

Monteverde Institute: Culture, Community, and Health
A preliminary investigation of the effects of the transformation on the community due to tourism. In recent years the economic structure of Costa Rica’s Monteverde zone (Santa Elena, Cerro Plano, Monteverde) has been transformed from one based on agriculture and dairy to one based on tourism. The goal of our project is to provide a preliminary investigation of the effects of this transformation on the community. Prior to beginning our research, we identified several possible effects of tourism on the area. These possible effects consisted of economic and cultural shifts, contamination of the water supply, decreased air quality, an increase …

A Device For Imposing Uniform, Cyclic Strain To Cells Growing On Implant Alloys, Larry Chad Winter
A Device For Imposing Uniform, Cyclic Strain To Cells Growing On Implant Alloys, Larry Chad Winter
Theses and Dissertations
Since bone tissues grow in intimate contact with implant surfaces in vivo, there is a need to investigate how bone cells respond to mechanical loads adjacent to implants under well characterized loading conditions that stimulate the bone-implant surface. Thus, the objective of this study was to demonstrate an effective means for applying known, uniform, cyclic strain to cells growing on implant materials in vitro. A cell culture strain plate device was developed based on the application of the four-point bending principle. The device uses a small electric motor to drive belts attached to shafts which turn a set of cams. …
An Aminopeptidase Acting As A Potential Factor In Host Adaptation Of Mycoplasma Gallinarum, Xiufeng Wan
An Aminopeptidase Acting As A Potential Factor In Host Adaptation Of Mycoplasma Gallinarum, Xiufeng Wan
Theses and Dissertations
Unlike most other host-specific mycoplasmas, Mycoplasma gallinarum exists as a commensal with a host range including most poultry as well as some mammals. This property of M. gallinarum may reflect unique mechanisms for its colonization and persistence in hosts. Whereas M. gallinarum shows leucine and arginine aminopeptidase activity, the genes encoding the enzymes had not been cloned and characterized. We identified an aminopeptidase gene (APN) by oligonucleotide hybridization to a genomic library of M. gallinarum in lambda ZAPII bacteriophage. Nucleotide sequence analysis of overlapping phage clones identified a 1,362 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a putative leucine aminopeptidase gene. …

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Fort Worth District, is investigating the water resource problems, needs, and opportunities within the Big Fossil Creek drainage in Tarrant County, Texas. The effort focuses on describing existing conditions and identifying measures to minimize and control flood loss within a 48,396.8-acre area of the drainage north of the city of Fort Worth. Geo-Marine, Inc., of Plano, Texas, was contracted by the USACE to assess the potential for historic properties within the drainage area. Background research and a pedestrian reconnaissance survey of the project area were carried out and a geographical information systems (GIS) …
Incorporating High Nitrate Feed Into Feeding Programs, Trey Patterson
Incorporating High Nitrate Feed Into Feeding Programs, Trey Patterson
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
When drought hits and feed is short, producers wonder if they can provide high nitrate feeds to their cattle. The answer is “Yes, if you know what you’re doing.” Nitrates can be very dangerous to cattle, causing reduced performance, abortions, and death. Know the toxicity symptoms and toxic levels of nitrates before using high nitrate feedstuffs in your feeding program. Refer to SDSU Extension Extra 4015 (Nitrate Poisoning of Livestock) for specifics regarding nitrate poisoning and guidelines for safe nitrate levels in animal diets. While nitrates feeds are dangerous to cattle, they can be fed if properly managed. Toxic effects …
Limit-Feeding Cows In A Drylot, Cody Wright
Limit-Feeding Cows In A Drylot, Cody Wright
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Providing forage for cow herds is normally paramount to maintaining a desirable level of productivity. But during drought years, the supply of standing and harvested forages may be extremely limited and/or very expensive. Relocating the cow herd into drylot is a management alternative that may allow producers to take advantage of inexpensive grains and byproduct feeds to formulate cost effective cow diets.
Use Of Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles (Ddgs) In Swine Diets, Bob Thaler
Use Of Distillers Dried Grains With Solubles (Ddgs) In Swine Diets, Bob Thaler
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
More and more ethanol co-products are available for livestock feed because of the rapid growth of the ethanol industry in South Dakota. The three main co-products are Distillers Grains, Solubles, and Distillers Grains with Solubles, and they can be either “wet” or “dried” depending on the manufacturing process. Since, in the U.S., on-farm feed mixing and swine feeding systems are almost exclusively designed for dry feed, we deal here only with the dried products. All ethanol plants in South Dakota mainly produce Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS), limiting our discussion further to only DDGS as a feed ingredient for …

Faculty Research and Scholarship
Recent studies indicate that the transcriptional activity of steroid receptors is governed by proteins called nuclear receptor coactivators. Using immunocytochemistry, we found that on the day of birth (postnatal d 0) males express higher levels of the nuclear receptor coactivator, cAMP response element binding protein-binding protein (CBP), within the ventromedial hypothalamus, medial preoptic area, and arcuate nucleus. Using Western immunoblots, we confirmed that males have higher levels of CBP on postnatal d 0, 1, and 5; however, there was no sex difference on postnatal d 11. To examine the functional role of CBP, we infused oligodeoxynucleotides that were antisense to …

A summary note is a brief description of a resource. In most formats, it is an optional note under AACR2, but it becomes especially important when contents cannot be easily examined, as in videos, motion pictures, sound recordings, archival collections, and electronic resources. An abstract is more extensive, and can be a stand-alone source of information about the resource. It is a rich source of keywords for electronic retrieval. The two terms are increasingly used together or interchangeably in guidelines for catalogers for use of the MARC tag 520, and the definitions are sometimes merged to allow for more detail …
