Distinct Properties Of Crac And Mic Channels In Rbl Cells, J. Ashot Kozak, Hubert H. Kerschbaum, Michael D. Cahalan Aug 2002

Distinct Properties Of Crac And Mic Channels In Rbl Cells, J. Ashot Kozak, Hubert H. Kerschbaum, Michael D. Cahalan

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

In rat basophilic leukemia (RBL) cells and Jurkat T cells, Ca2+ release–activated Ca2+ (CRAC) channels open in response to passive Ca2+ store depletion. Inwardly rectifying CRAC channels admit monovalent cations when external divalent ions are removed. Removal of internal Mg2+ exposes an outwardly rectifying current (Mg2+-inhibited cation [MIC]) that also admits monovalent cations when external divalent ions are removed. Here we demonstrate that CRAC and MIC currents are separable by ion selectivity and rectification properties: by kinetics of activation and susceptibility to run-down and by pharmacological sensitivity to external Mg2+, spermine, and …

Analysis Of Zebrafish Optic Tectum Visual Processing Before And After Optic Nerve Crush, Angela Mcdowell Aug 2002

Analysis Of Zebrafish Optic Tectum Visual Processing Before And After Optic Nerve Crush, Angela Mcdowell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The visual system processes information at various levels. Initial processing takes place in the retina, which then sends information to the optic tectum, the first visual brain center in lower vertebrates, for further processing. There were two main goals of this study. The first goal was to obtain tectal evoked responses (TER) from adult zebrafish and to compare them to previous electroretinogram (ERG) spectral sensitivity data (Bilotta & Harrison, 1999). The second purpose of this study was to examine neural regeneration in the adult zebrafish at various times post-crush and to compare visual processing of these subjects to the normal …

Estimating Population Numbers Of Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) In Eastern Kentucky Using Microsatellite Analysis, Kelly Vowels Aug 2002

Estimating Population Numbers Of Black Bears (Ursus Americanus) In Eastern Kentucky Using Microsatellite Analysis, Kelly Vowels

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Black bears (Ursus americanus) occur sporadically in eastern Kentucky, and there is some evidence that a breeding population exists. In order to establish management practices to enhance the black bear population in Kentucky, information about this population is needed. However, until recently, no population size estimate has been available. Gathering information on black bears is difficult because black bears are elusive animals. The development of new molecular methods has made it easier to track and gather information on black bear populations, including estimates of population size. Molecular markers are particularly useful in that they do not require physical contact with …

Culture And Adolescent Development, C S. Chen, Susan Farruggia Aug 2002

Culture And Adolescent Development, C S. Chen, Susan Farruggia

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

This paper summarizes several of the most significant issues in the area of culture and adolescent development. First, we discuss the classical debates regarding the universality of adolescence as a distinct period of life and as a period of emotional turmoil. Second, we focus on the role of culture in the physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development of adolescents. Finally, we outline two emerging issues in cross-cultural adolescent psychology (i.e., developmental processes and the effects of social change and globalization).

Element Ratios And Aquatic Food Webs, R. Eugene Turner Aug 2002

Element Ratios And Aquatic Food Webs, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

Organic matter is the result of concentrating a few non-metals that are relatively rare in the earth’s crust. Most of these essential elements are in a rough proportionality within phylogenetic groupings. Life is thus working against a concentration gradient to extract or accumulate these elements, and this metabolic work is accomplished in interrelated and often subtle ways for many other elements. The physiological requirement to sustain these elemental ratios (commonly discussed in terms of the N∶P ratios, but also C∶N, C∶P, and Si∶N ratios) constrains organization at the cellular, organism, and community level. Humans, as geochemical engineers, significantly influence the …

Human Exposure To Herpesvirus B–Seropositive Macaques, Bali, Indonesia, Gregory A. Engel, Lisa Jones-Engel, Michael A. Schillaci, Komang Gde Suaryana, Artha Putra, Agustin Fuentes, Richard Henkel

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Herpesvirus B (Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1) has been implicated as the cause of approximately 40 cases of meningoencephalitis affecting persons in direct or indirect contact with laboratory macaques. However, the threat of herpesvirus B in nonlaboratory settings worldwide remains to be addressed. We investigated the potential for exposure to herpesvirus B in workers at a “monkey forest” (a temple that has become a tourist attraction because of its monkeys) in Bali, Indonesia. In July 2000, 105 workers at the Sangeh Monkey Forest in Central Bali were surveyed about contact with macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Nearly half of those interviewed had …

Enterococcus Faecalis 3-Hydroxy-3-Methylglutaryl Coenzyme A Synthase, An Enzyme Of Isopentenyl Diphosphate Biosynthesis, Autumn Sutherlin, Matija Hedl, Barbara Sanchez-Neri, John W. Burgner Ii, Cynthia V. Stauffacher, Victor W. Rodwell

Bindley Publications

Biosynthesis of the isoprenoid precursor isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) proceeds via two distinct pathways. Sequence comparisons and microbiological data suggest that multidrug-resistant strains of gram-positive cocci employ exclusively the mevalonate pathway for IPP biosynthesis. Bacterial mevalonate pathway enzymes therefore offer potential targets for development of active site-directed inhibitors for use as antibiotics. We used the PCR and Enterococcus faecalis genomic DNA to isolate the mvaS gene that encodes 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) synthase, the second enzyme of the mevalonate pathway. mvaS was expressed in Escherichia coli from a pET28 vector with an attached N-terminal histidine tag. The expressed enzyme was purified …

Fuddy Meers, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department Aug 2002

Fuddy Meers, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

2002 Summer Theatre

A sinister and zany comedic romp with a dark domestic drama at its heart, Fuddy Meers illustrates a world in which nothing is as it seems, hardly anyone can be understood, and trusting the wrong person can get you locked in the basement with a foul-mouthed sock puppet, hit over the head with a frying pan, or hauled over the Canadian border. This is especially challenging if you are a sunny amnesiac like Claire, who must contend with kidnapping, family reunion, and intrusive carnival music playing in her head, all before she can figure out whether she prefers juice or …

Managing Pastures During And After Drought, Barry H. Dunn, Patricia S. Johnson Aug 2002

Managing Pastures During And After Drought, Barry H. Dunn, Patricia S. Johnson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Drought provides dramatic evidence of the role of short- and long-term management of native rangeland and tame pastures. Proper management of range and pasture resources during drought is critical for sustainable livestock production and centers on one key strategy: reducing stocking rate.

Waiting To Exhale?: Global Warming And Tax Policy, Roberta Mann Aug 2002

Waiting To Exhale?: Global Warming And Tax Policy, Roberta Mann

American University Law Review

This article explores the links between energy policy, tax policy and global warming. This article focuses on tax policy, because the emerging consensus among legal scholars favors economic incentives rather than command-and-control regulations for reaching environmental goals, and the Federal income tax has proved an effective delivery system for economic incentives.

After briefly discussing of the science of global warming and the provisions of the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change, the article reviews the impact of both existing tax law and current proposals for energy legislation on global warming, as well as potential international law consequences of failure to act …

Examination Of Small Mammal Diversity In The Riparian Areas Of Walden, Tennessee, Forrest Brown Vanderbilt Aug 2002

Examination Of Small Mammal Diversity In The Riparian Areas Of Walden, Tennessee, Forrest Brown Vanderbilt

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Vanderbilt, Forrest B. Examination of Small Mammal Diversity in the Riparian Areas of Walden, Tennessee Thesis under the direction of Robert D. Keller, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Biology It has been hypothesized that riparian zones are prime conservation habitats and can be used as indicators of general ecosystem health (Montgomery 1996). Riparian zones, comprising a range of habitat types, typically exhibit higher biotic diversity when compared to adjacent upland hardwood forests (Batzli 1977, Cross 1985a, Cross 1985b, Doyle 1985, Knopf et al. 1988, Doyle 1990, Naiman and Decamps 1997, Ellison and van Riper III 1998, Olson and Knopf 1998). Weir River Area Of Critical Environmental Concern: Natural Resources Inventory, Urban Harbors Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston

Urban Harbors Institute Publications

The Weir River Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) was designated by the Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Affairs in 1986 in recognition of one of the largest and most productive salt marsh ecosystems in the Boston Harbor area. As an ACEC, the region is afforded additional attention and protection from state agencies in order to achieve the goals of designation--to restore, enhance, and manage the resources. The region was nominated by residents of the abutting communities of Hull, Hingham, and Cohasset who took the opportunity to call attention to the uniqueness of the environment and to their concerns that development …

The Rights Of Animals: A Very Short Primer, Cass R. Sunstein Aug 2002

The Rights Of Animals: A Very Short Primer, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Do animals have rights? Almost everyone believes in animal rights, at least in some minimal sense; the real question is what that phrase actually means. By exploring that question, it is possible to give a clear sense of the lay of the land—to show the range of possible positions, and to explore what issues, of theory or fact, separate reasonable people. On reflection, the spotlight should be placed squarely on the issue of suffering and well-being. This position requires rejection of some of the most radical claims by animal rights advocates, especially those that stress the “autonomy” of animals, or …

The Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of The Sentinel Butte Formation Around Beicegel Creek, Mckenzie County, North Dakota, Joseph L. Stone Aug 2002

The Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of The Sentinel Butte Formation Around Beicegel Creek, Mckenzie County, North Dakota, Joseph L. Stone

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 580 ft of the Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene) is exposed within this study area. A stratigraphic and sedimentologic study of these exposures was done in order to gather new information about the formation, to interpret paleodepositional environments, and to possibly develop an overall depositional model.

Stratigraphic analysis identified four major sand units within the study area, separated by intervals of mudstone and lignite. The lowermost sandstone unit is identified as the Basal Sandstone (Royse 1967). All of the sandstone units exhibit sedimentary structures that suggest a fluvial source for their deposition. They tend to be laterally consistent and when …
